hi, was thinking about maul druid

i just found an ethereal champion axe. if i socket this i get 6 sockets :)
and i have all the runes for botd

now, my question is, would this be a good weapon for pvm? it has nice stat's and 60% ias (20 more than messersmid) or should i stick to the unique champion (messer) and trade the eth champion away?

nope a complete waste of botd runes. only make botd on eth zerker, cb,giant threster, giant pole axe, or war pike.(and maybe a few others) all 2 handed axes suck they barely do more damge than 1 handed ones and have same range and are usually slow, and they are 2 handed!! as for a pvm weapon what kind of char are u making.

i was planing on making a maul wb (just like in 1.09)
str till equip, base dex rest vit

i can't see how this would be "slow"
it has 60 ias and with an additional 40 ias (loh and highlord's) i can get 7fpa's (not that slow imo)

the zerker axe with same setup for speed only let's me reach 8 fpa's

the damage on an ethereal zerker axe (with perf botd) would be 180-530 (avg of 355)
for the champion axe (with a perf botd) it would be 440-705 (avg of 572.5)

that's a diff of 217 on avg damage

i know it's a two hander, but aren't two handers a bear's best friend?

you're quite right quickske. I'm not sure if royal has played many pvm wererdruids in the past.

The best for botd would be an eth feral axe, if that were possible. Unfortunately, they can't get 6 sockets (poo on you bliz!) so other options are champion, ogre maul, and glorious axe. I haven't heard much about the champion axe (although faster by default, it does have quite low dmg) but I have heard great things about both the BotD eth glorious axe (HUUUGE dmg, and good speed) and BotD eth ogre maul (many druid's choice). I'd maybe do some # crunching with those base weapons and see what you get... I have a hunch they'll both be quite a bit better than a champ. axe for BotD wb.

good luck with your BotD!

It's a nice weapon, but I would still prefer the Giant Thresher. It's not a bad weapon at all. Personally, 7-Frames is a good number to hit at for a PvM Mauler. I enjoy some fairly good speed and still doing good damage. I would say be original and go for it if you want.

And yes, use a 2-Hander.

srry for my late reply, school stuff.. :(

I thought I'd mention here that the IAS from highlords and other sources of IAS other than THAT WHICH IS ON THE WEAPON ITSELF will not benefit you at all. In wereform OIAS does not work at all.

And still can get you to the faster frames for a 2-Hander on a WB. Examples are Cruel Giant Thresher of Quickness, dual shael'd. It would be a 6-Frame, but with 10 OIAS it hits 5. There are plenty of examples, but it doesn't always help.

interesting stuff man, i just usally follow the rule of thumb that oias is useless for shifters.

Stfu plz newb. Thx.
Just off the top of my head.
Shael ribcracker is 8fpa
With only 20oias, I get 7fpa.
Oias can usually push you over the next frame easy.

I've never noticed the oias working. does this only affect bears? Does it affect only the first wing of fury and not the actual fury hits on a wolf or what.

yeah, no reason to flame me you flamer.

my confusion might also have something to do with the fact that even though I've been building druids since 07 (newb? where?) I usually focus on PvP and therefore fast 1 handed weapons.

Like I said it's on an item basis, but also your level of Werewolf can totally remove the need for OIAS on some items. The best way is to check out the guides [Dragoon's have plenty of stuff about weapon speeds] and by using the Calculator. The Calc is an incredible resource that you should become very familiar as a Druid. If you don't quite understand it all, I've got a small FAQ in the sticky to the Calc.
