Help with zealot build

I've seen posts about how a zeal/fanatic deals with PIs by having certain weapons. My question is...should I wait until I get a decent elemental weapon or can I deal with PIs effectively with minimal points in other skills?
Specifically, I'm looking at either putting points in vengeance or conviction.

Vengeance
Pros - Synergy with defensive elemental auras for increased dmg. Only have to add 1 pt to get skill since I already have the pre-reqs. Still able to use with fanaticism
Cons - Lower attack rating than my zeal attack.

Conviction
Pros - Can break all immunities (though not sure how much I would need; just 1 pt?) thereby increasing all dmg. Still using zeal attack, so it will better at crowd control.
Cons - Can't use fanaticism so attack rating will be lower than normal but not sure if lower than vengeance/fanaticism. Need to spend 4 pts on pre-reqs on skills I wouldn't use and don't provide synergies.

Anyways, I would rather not have to run away from PIs like I am now while waiting until I find good gear. On the other hand, I want to minimize the use of skill points on a secondary, situation dependent skill.

Thoughts?

I currently use a gimmershred (boatloads of elemental damage in 3 elements and very fast attack speed) with zeal and it works decently, albit slowly. I think conviction and gimmershred would work wonders. The item is also really cheap which is a definite plus.

Thanks for the recommendation on gimmershred. Is the small weapon range limiting with gimmershred when used in melee mode?

I don't think its much of a limitation. Zealers are going to get hit in mobs regardless and you should already be dealing with that with high resists and life tap. Some strategies I've found while using gimmershred switch is to deal with non-physical immunes first or to seperate physical and non-physical immune packs. You can't leech with gimmer even with life tap so you really shouldn't be in the middle of more than...I'd say 4 PI-monsters max. As I said, it'll be slow going against immunes but atleast you'll be able to solo the forgotten sands....
