Help With Building a Light/Cold Sorc

Re: Help With Building a Light/Cold Sorc

Wiki says that "It takes a little over 10 life regeneration to give you +1 hit point per second." So in the higher levels, you should have something like 2/3 life per second, which isn't that bad.

I might be wrong, though. I'm thinking of getting a barb merc for my CL/FO sorc, and equipping them with something like this:

Delirium helm
Something like BotD, Doom, Last Wish or Lawbringer as a weapon (Lawbringer has some nice additional dmg bonuses and is cheap, while Last Wish has Might Aura, for extra kaboom, but it's rather expensive)
Dual Fortitude also looks good (if the bonuses stack, that is >.>), or if you have the runes, Fort armor and Phoenix sword. The Phoenix comes with Redemption aura, so Life leech might not be necessary.

Give Mr. Prayer a try. He's available in act 2 normal, so you can test him out before you make the choice to get the Barbarian.

If you have an Insight in a lower level weapon like a poleaxe, you can give it to him at lvl 27 (everyone levels/quests at their own pace, but at 27 I'm usually finishing Act 3 or starting Act 4). So that may provide you a bit of time to see what you think of the prayer/medi combo.

I actually recommend him highly for a manaholic like the ChainOrb. :)

Ugh... NVM!

Thanks for this thread... I think I've decided on a Sorc build now. =]

Painman, what would an optimal helm and armor be for that type or merc if I had an insight polearm? Probably something with HIGH defense?

i have a etheral Umed CoT and a Ebuged Stone on him (3.8kdef), with a defiance Aura he gets arround 19k Def and also max resists, he uses a Eth Trasher Insight, he has arround 2.2k max dmg according to his chart. He dies only if i forget him in the midle of a lot of mobs or with andy´s poison. But using the teleport well he never dies.

I tried the prayer merc, he heals 11 hit points every few seconds.. it does help, but nothing major. He's only lvl 42 though.. is there a way to find out what his lvl his aura is by checking his lvl? I'm guessing his aura is at the lvl where it is "heals 11"

Good, cheap, effective merc gear that can be bought for gems: Tal's mask, Duriel's Shell. Won't help him tank an act boss, but will give him resists, life, leech and Cannot Be Frozen.

Would Blackhorns face be a good alternative to Tals mask? I mean, he doesn't really need Mana leech and the added bonus's of: Prevent monster heal, slows target by 20% and +20 to lightning absorb seem fairly good for a merc.

You could probably get away with that in NM, but in Hell, a Prayer merc still needs life leech, or he'll get beat down...

For what Tal's costs in the Trade Forums here (usually 5-6 pgems) it's damn good.

Prayer+Insight is a very nice combo indeed :) Haven't had to use a pot since I put the insight on him. ^_^ Level 37 and going strong.

CL spam + FO when it's available rocks :D

Something I noticed about the merc is that he's less offensive than the Holy Freeze one, or the Might one. Those are always running at the enemies and attacking, while the Prayer one hangs around you, often not attacking even when you cast at enemies.

This is good so far, because if he goes to the monsters he's going to get wiped out, and I depend on him for mana, but later on I might get annoyed with it.

Read up on the ultimate merc guide there are some very good thoughts as to what merc you should choose based on the type of sorc that you are. Personally speaking YOU are the damage dealer in this particular build. You just need those enemies to focus on your merc so holy freeze would be the way to go for general playing.

If you want to focus on just fighting act bosses then I'd go with a defiance merc.
If you are primarily an ice spec than you will want to go with a might merc since he kills much faster.

I've used prayer mercs before but other than reducing downtime (just chug a potion) or fighting off poison you will get more bang for your buck going with the other types of mercs.
