Help me decide between D2 and D3!

Once again I return to this forum! The reason is same as always - I've got a serious itch for Diablo!

Right now I'm looking help to decide whether I should start D2 or D3!

I feel like I have played D2 so much but it's still the only game that gets me really excited. I did not find the feeling of progression in Diablo 3 that I enjoy in Diablo 2. However, the last time I have played D3 has been a couple of month after the launch. How much has the game changed since the launch? Is it worthwhile to re-visit or should I just stick with Diablo 2?

I'd really appreciate your comments on how D3 has changed since the launch and what Diablo game would you prefer and why! Thanks!

D3 hasn't changed at all since about 5/8/13. Without knowing when you quit it's hard to say exactly, but chances are you quit around the MP 0 Act 3 time? Well now it's high MP Act 1 time. Otherwise not a lot of meaningful change. You might decide to go with the xpac when it comes out, though so far it isn't looking so great, but if you want something different now you're picking between D2 and blowing (hordes of) goats (away).

In some ways, D3 has changed a lot, in others, it hasn't really changed at all. Whether I'd recommend coming back depends on why you left D3 in the first place.

I don't think you will get a definite answer to this question from us. If D2 still gets you excited then you should stick with it, at least until the expansion comes out for D3. In the mean time, I recommend that you try the PTR. It's open to everyone and showcases many of the coming changes well enough that you'll be able to reach an informed conclusion about it. To see the expansion only content you can always check out streams on Twitch. One important thing: if you do try the PTR do it with an open mind. On the surface it may seem that not many things have changed, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

RoS will change a lot for the better - maybe check out some beta gameplay on youtube...

If you left D3, you probably left because of:
1: Piss Poor Itemization.
2: Lack of gameplay depth.

Surprise, surprise, D3 STILL has piss poor itemization, and, if anything, the gameplay has actually become MORE shallow. Unfortunately, RoS isn't going to fix the Piss Poor Itemization, or the gameplay. The only thing really good about D3 (consistently, since release) is combat flow, and that actually takes a hit in RoS because of the new affixes added to already annoying elites, and the stupidly ridiculous increases to monster Hit Points.

So, unless you found yourself addicted to D3's combat, RUN! Run faster than Cain fleeing from his prison in Tristram, because D3 has nothing to offer you. And feel free to run and not look back, too, because Itemization and Gameplay are NEVER going to change at their core.

Also - D3 fansites are completely overrun by wildly, over-the-top cynical posters who act like Blizz and D3 are horrific plagues on humanity. If you are a sane human being who doesn't need D3 to change your life in order to find it enjoyable, I suggest you ignore these posters.

Regardless, the xpac will change a bunch of things. Some of them you may hate, some of them you may love.

Thanks for all of your answers!

It is like many of you said, I did not feel the progression of my character clearly enough (this is mainly because itemization) and I quit just after they introduced paragon levels.

Your replies have helped me make a decision to wait until the expansion comes out and then give D3 another chance. I won't be firing up D2 just now because the inevitable end game / trading aspect of the game feels tiring for me.

Thanks again!

Try PoE. Unless it has to have Diablo in title. I’m self found in A2 Cruel now. I’m able to make an actual, unique, build. Drop rates that bring regular updates to my progression. Using orbs to get the linked sockets right to get desired skills in. And chain them. As an example; ground slam that stuns targets. Linked to support gem that gives me 10 sec endurance boost (Pdef and life regen) every time I stun enemies. I’m on path to add lightning arc on criticals (another support gem) to that skill. Meaning I must choose my passives next to increase crit. chance.

And so on. All this in dark/gloomy/etc. environment where monsters explode in gory cloud. Also music and effects are great building the atmosphere. Not counting Dominus phase two, no lag that has killed me (*krhm* D3).

Until then, why not fire up the PTR client? You'll be able to preview many of the new features and decide whether things changed for the better for you. When you don't have to you shouldn't make decisions based on what other people say, as their opinions will never align perfectly with yours.

D2 was great in its time, but the end game grind, lack of meaningful content other than teleporting to bosses, plus the low res graphics kind of killed it for me. I had all the best items, so unless I wanted to upgrade my skill/life grand charms from +31 life to +35 life, etc., nothing left to do. I deleted it a while ago.

Preordered the RoS expansion and looking forward to that.

@mouseman - in case you didn't know, because it's a big deal to some people, the current decision of Blizz is that trading of legendaries will not be allowed. They're doing this because they feel it will allow them to make them more powerful and less rare without throwing the entire game way out of balance.

D3 is still D3, patches and expansions won't really change the mechanics of this game. It's a streamlined turd.

Ah, I could have avoided that last sentence, but I took a truth serum this morning.

to the OP: D3 IS D3, no doubt. If you played D2 you should really give D3 a try. You may like it, you may not. All of the opinions in this thread and in others should not change whether or not you want to give it a try. No one but you can tell you if you're going to like the game.

If you've gone this long without playing D3, you might as well wait another 2 months and play when the xpac comes out. It's very much a fresh start for the game. Or as hardrock suggested, you could boot up the PTR and see how you like the changes.

Your "new" avatar threw me! Regardless, great advice like always.
