Hello! and a meleeing in 1.10 question

Wow, a D2 forum that seems to be populated by people capable of being pleasant to each other! If I'd known about this place a year ago when I started playing the game, I'd have been here sooner.

Anyway, hello!

On to my question - I've only recently started playing the 1.10 patch and it seems to me that meleeing got much, much harder. In particular the chance to hit seems to be much lower, whatever the percentage given in your characters screen. Has something been done in 1.10 to make hitting with a melee weapon more difficult or is it just me?

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum!

I believe monster defence has gone up a bit, so you'll need more AR or higher level to increase your chance-to-hit. Also many of the monsters can block (even if they don't have a shield), so even though you'll hit, you won't do any damage.

welcome to the SPF

like shade says, they have more def so you'll want to put in more dex, this sorta leads you to have higher blocking too so find a nice block shield too. If you're using a pally like zealot or avenger, i think that you should put enough points for max block with holy shield and leave your dex at that

Oh melee took some real big hits enemies with defense, blocking, and the usual aura/enchantments on boss packs. Plus as an added bonus minions of a boss seem to gain the added effects (such as chilling) that their boss has. I am not saying that melee is not viable just that it has become alot harder to hit anything and to deal enough damage to kill anything. But the dex suggestion and the increased attack rating suggestions are the way to go in order to play melee builds.

Never, ever put points into dex for AR. Trust me. Get enough dex to use your gear and get the rest of AR from items that add base AR and skills that multiply that base AR. Don't put points into dex for AR.

Damn. I'm predictable. :teeth:

Seriously, though, if you do some math you'll see that I'm correct on the "no dex for AR" thing. *waves hand* You want to trust me. You don't want to push dex for AR. Oh, and these aren't the droids you are looking for. *stops waving hand*

If you go the melee route in 1.10, i highly recommend getting crushing blow and some kind of slow effect. The NM Act 2 merc's Holy Freeze is one good way to get area of effect slow, but there's lots more. Cleglaw's gloves has slow, there's a normal unique mace thingie (General Something-or-other's thingmabob)with slow, blackhorn's face helm has slow, kelpie snare polearm/spear has slow. There's probably more too that i haven't yet run across. Any kind of slow translates into more safety for your melee char. Crushing blow helps you kill faster by removing a percentage of an enemy's life per hit. Other experts can give you the details on crushing blow, but the bottom line is more = better. Anyways, kick *** :)

I've got nothing to add to this conversation, but I wanted to pop in and say Welcome! :howdy:

dont feed the squid and you'll be fine.
and i also recommend any crushign blow you can get. dealing 25% of the monsters life in 1 blow is very nice! my barb has 45%chance of crushign blow, so nearly every other hit i do really hurts the monster! and if you can get reasonable elemental dmg on your weapon then do so, as physical immunes or stone skins are a real pain if you can get rid of there immunity.

Welcome to the forum, nice melee builds these days are WW druids/bears, Zealot/Avenger Paladins, and Kicker assassins...all can make it in Hell. Barbs as well, but so so so slow (maybe Frenzy barb is ok...haven't got one).
