Hell Maggot Lair advice for a noobie necro?

First off, great forum here... fantastic resource, but you guys all knew that already.

Just started playing Diablo 2 about a month ago and I'm having a lot of fun, but I still have tons to learn. I've been trying to take it slow since this is my first character (and really, I die enough as it is).

I'm having a lot of trouble getting through the Maggot Lair in hell and was hoping to find some advice in here. So far, I can only manage to get about halfway through the first level. The main problems I can identify are as follows:

1 It's really narrow in there, leaving only enough room for my fire golem and one skellie (my merc is too dumb to get in the fray and the golem wouldn't get in there either if I didn't cast him in the middle of it). I cast amp and maybe attract if there's a line forming and then wait for the corpses. It takes forever for them to make the first corpse for CE, which I could live with except...

2 Every other turn has some lightning enchanted unique that either mows down my entourage or really takes all day to kill... and then kills me since my resists are all around -40

I will probably just try to enlist some help to get through this, but I've spent about three days trying to do it, dying about a dozen times a day and completely decimating the 2 million or so I had stockpiled in my stash (I know gold isn't worth anything in this game, but it's all I have... well... had). It has become personal for me now, and I refuse to admit defeat.

Maybe I'm using the wrong tactics (likely). Maybe my level is too low (77, unlikely). Maybe I just misspent some points somewhere (possible, but unlikely... 20+ RS SM and a few RSM). Maybe my build was just never meant to get past act 2.

I come before you, humbly requesting your wisdom. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

gets pretty annoying. If ur merc is good enough you could just get a single golem and use amp with ur merc. Merc kills 1 guy then corpse explode. Only works tho if u have a pretty good merc and remember to constantly heal him if he takes a lot of damage.

Can you use terror or attract to get some of the lightning or poison guys out of there so they aren't all of them continually casting on you?

Make sure you have 1pt in summon resist.

Maggot lair is a pain for skelliemancers unless you have teleport. It helps to not use mages in there. Basic strategy is to kill one with your skellies or merc and then corpse explode.

I'm going to propose to despawn all but merc.. Only 1 person can attack in there and the merc does 4x the damage of a skeleton, might as well be him!

I had trouble getting through it and I waited until I got my enigma personally... Are you SP or MP?

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Despawning my skellies did the trick. I managed to make it work using merc, golem and mages. Any uniques I faced would heal almost as quickly as they took damage. Having poison mages fixed that. I've been so focused on physical damage it never occurred to me to feature the mages. Now I'm up to level 80 and halfway through Act 3!

No teleport items as yet, but that's next on my list.

Thanks again!
