Heart of the Oak

Isn't Heart of the Oak actually better than Ocolous for normal gameplay?

It gives more mana, more resistances, same +3 to skills, replenish life, high increased cast speed...and ontop of that it gives you an oak sage (extra life yet again..handy) and ravens (also handy)

Apart from the loss of 50%(75%) magic find, isn't it actually much better? (or am I missing something

In my mind.... Yes.

In the mind of a Mf hungry Sorc.... No.

HotO is definitely better for efficiency but the payback for using it is just gameplay while oculus could render you with more items and enable even more fun chars.

(If people actually went with HotO, they'd have to stop complaining about how the 25% chance to teleport killed them... and we can't have them thinking it may be their fault...)

Heart of the Oak has been the natural choice for any Sorc since a week after 1.10 arrived :p I'd not even use an Oculus on my Sorceresses even if I was payed to. So lousy..

Well...Since all I have is an Ocolous...and even if I did find the runes for HoTO, I would most likely not find anything to socket it in anyway.

But at least my conclussions were not totally stupid.

Builds and classes who love Heart of the Oak:

Almost all sorceresses except enchantresses.
Minion necros.
Hammerdins and perhaps even templars and clerics.
Singer barbarians (uses warcries for damage).
Elemental druids.

4 socket flails / crystal swords r very easy to find so you would easily find something to socket it in, so dont give me that excuse!!

I'm making a hoto for my blizzard sorc... who is only level 12 at the moment so she's not technically a blizzard sorc yet.

Heh, no because I never pick up grey items in the game...and since socketed items are grey, well...LOL

I dunno but i'd prefer Death's Fathom for my Meteorb mf sorc. Cold damage gets a nice boost and i like it . -50 mf is no big deal. Of course i still have to get one though :p

Does HOTO work with swords?
According to the Arreat Summit it works in 4 socket Staves/Maces

Actually 4 socket flails have quite some value these days. And chaos you should have no problem finding one since, as we recently discovered, you can see the sockets on grey items without picking them up. ;)

Three points.

1) Occulus is just a tiny bit easier to find than Vex.
2) Some people like the whole 50% MF thing.
3) Replenish life, oak sage and ravens are totally useless. Your oak sage will get squished in 0.0001 seconds in Hell.

But feel free to use a hoto, if you have one! :)

I the whole flail situation to be quite ridiculous, given that I had five on them on a mule and just threw them out. Once you know the secret, you'll laugh at the people paying godly for them as well.

No, i'm not telling you.

No, i'm not telling you.
You are now mentioning all the qualities that are useless on a Hoto and no one actually uses.. now let us compare the two...

Heart Of The Oak
+3 To All Skills
+40% Faster Cast Rate
+75% Damage To Demons
+100 To Attack Rating Against Demons
Adds 3-14 Cold Damage, 3 sec. Duration (Normal)
7% Mana Stolen Per Hit
+10 To Dexterity
Replenish Life +20
Increase Maximum Mana 15%
All Resistances +30-40 (varies)
Level 4 Oak Sage (25 Charges)
Level 14 Raven (60 Charges)
+50% Damage To Undead

The Oculus
+3 To Sorceress Skill Levels
+5 To Mana After Each Kill
All Resistances +20
25% Chance To Cast Level 1 Teleport When Struck
30% Faster Cast Rate
+20 To Vitality
+20 To Energy
+20% Enhanced Defense
50% Better Chance Of Getting Magic Items

- Hoto has better resistances, varying from 10-20 and that is quite a lot.
- Hoto does not have the annoying 25% chance to teleport.
- Hoto has 10% better FCR.
- Hoto increases your mana with 15%
- Hoto replenishes life (which is actually quite nice if you cant leech)
- Hoto adds 10 to dexterity

- Oculus adds 20 vitality
- Oculus adds 20 energy
- Oculus adds 20% extra defense (that's not much when your base def sucks)
- Oculus adds 5 mana after each kill
- Oculus adds 50% better MF

From a pure gameplay points of view the Occy has only 1 advantage over the Hoto and it's the 20 vitality. Hoto is better in basically everything else. Is it worth your Vex rune as a sorceress? Hmm I dunno, tough choice.

Like I said, if you can find a Vex, you should make Hoto, but until then, Occulus isn't exactly bad :)

If you look reeeally carefully, you will notice I never said Occy > Hoto. You may start chewing on your foot any time you like :)

The SOCKET RECIPE!?!?!?! OMG NO WAY! UBER LEET SECRET!!!!
Would this be the "super secret socket recipie" that reliably gives me a four socket flail every single time for next to no effort?

No?

Okay then. Moving right along.. ;)

Yeah I'm trying to get a vex rune... offering a BK ring, but so far no luck.

I prefer hoto because I do need the extra resistances, and I'm making a meph sorc so I will be switching for the kill, and I won't be switching to oculus.

I don't know what a hoto is, but I personally certainly prefer my Chromatic Ire http://www.geocities.com/psyadam/ire.html to a heart of oak or occy.

Erhm, no I can't, I do not have maphack, and I have not had maphack ever since 1.10 came out (and the time I didn't play 1.09)

Hmm you should get a Vex for that BK ring but if not, you could always try to trade for 2 Gul runes which seems slightly easier than Vex. I'm assuming you play ladder of course.
