Heart of the Oak Question

I'm looking to make a Heart of the Oak for my paladin. I've got the Pul, Ko, and Thul (I know, the easy part) and am still looking for Vex. A couple of questions though:

What is the value of a vex? I've got a gul and an extra pul to trade, as well as a baba, wizspike, lidless and other gear in that range. Is any of that worth a vex? Would gul + pul for vex be a good (and plausible) trade?

And when (if) I get the vex, what weapon should I put it in? I know that I usually see it in a flail, but it seems silly to put a valuable runeword in a normal item. Should I try for a scourge/knout, or would that devalue my HotO? (I assume people aren't just being lazy, and that they use flails because of the low dext/str reqs, but a scourge HotO seems so much prettier. :p )

I can't comment on the trade value side of it. But with regard to the item, you woul dnot be wasting it on a normal item. The only benefit of exceptional and elite items is the increased physical damage...hardly a concern on a caster weapon. Flail is the best choice.

Gul + Gul + Ruby (transmuted in cube) = Vex

If you can get one more gul you can make your hoto.

I'm no specialist either, but aren't you supposed to leave that up to the mods, and stop spamming?

And yes, I am on ladder. USEast Ladder to be exact. Still no luck on the Vex, but maybe my new char will get a gul or something good from her forge (wishful thinking.)

Easy there.

It makes no difference if you think someone else is wrong in a post, report it and leave it up to a moderator to deal with. We can determine if there's a problem or not, and take the appropriate action.

Word of advice to newcomers to the forums: It's perfectly ok for someone to point out that a post may be in the wrong forum, and also please understand that the forum rules (both the 10 commandments and the Community Forum's Rules and Links Thread) apply to everyone here, regardless of if you read them or not and regardless of if this is your first day here or your fourth year. There are no exemptions from this.

I think the "which weapon to use" question has been answered by others. As far as what you need in order to trade for a vex rune ...

I like to say, and firmly believe this myself, that the value of an item is set by the buyer. In my own dealings I have traded a tir for a lem (my tir, their lem). An outstanding trade for me because of the other persons need for the tir over the lem they had.

I watch the game names closely for trades such as this and keep a character loaded with runes of all types handy ... ready to jump into the game. Needless to say, you have to get their first and many, many others will be heading in the same direction to get that lem for practically nothing. I bring this up to prove my point. No one particular item is completely worthless or of universal value. Go out and sit on the join games screen for a while and monitor the game names. Most rune trades of this type will be found in the hell level games. You will find someone eventually who wants your gul or pul and is willing to give up their vex for it.

Or, you could go out and look for the vex yourself. One of the guides describes the cow levels as the best place to look for runes. For a vex, I would think the hell cow level. Make the game and play it yourself so others don't join and grab all the goodies while you're busy killing the walking hamburgers. If you're too weak to kill hell cows by yourself (they tend to gang up on you), ask one or two trusted friends to help. Password the game to keep out the riff-raff. Be sure to have some sort of agreement among you as to who gets what. It will save hard feelings later. I play the ubers that way with two of my on-line friends. Our agreement is, whoever supplies the keys to do the uber quest gets the torch. The other two help out. Works like a charm (pun intended).
