Having REAL problems with Diablo - Normal

Tried him about 10 times today.

Started by mistake on players 8 - cleared all the Oblivian Knights etc with IM no problem - Diablo one shotted my skellies, my merc and then me.

Spent about an hour going from merchant to merchant to get a +2 Summon Resit wand - cost my nearly 300K gold.

Been back on players 1 eight times tonight.

    The problems:
He insta Kills the Clay Golem - by the time I get him back up 4 skellies dead - recast decrep and the golem is dead again - then merc then rest of skellies then 3rd golem then me.

    Skills I have:
    19 to Summon skel
    5 to Skel mastery
    1 to clay golem
    1+1(want) to gelm mastery
    1+2(with wand to Summon resist)

1 each to Amp, Dim, Weaken, Terror, IM, Confuse, Attract, decrep

    1 teeth
    2 CE

I am lvl 36 and I can't kill this bugger with 8 skellies, golem, Prayer merc and me.

What do I need to do ?

Theres your problem. Quality over quantity. You only have level 5 skeleton mastery. Your skeletons will have a tough time killing since it's really low. Instead of putting points into skeleton try skeleton mastery from now on. You could also try casting lifetap on diablo instead of decripify. So your skeletons can live longer.
Do you have a point in revive? try and get some urdar revives or something that deliver's crushing blow.

Few forum issues too, eh? Three threads lol.

Diablo is a git - it's patience and dodging. If you can get him over some of the dead OK and explode them great. Otherwise it is a Duriel clone really - decrep, town, decrep, town.

Edit: see above post, if that is a Fishymancer than a couple of revives won't hurt against him. Once you get past him, Act 5 is much easier.

Or you could try Iron Maiden and Clay Golem, probably the easiest method.

Hmmm Fishymancer guide says 20 Raise Skellie BEFORE SM as you get more bonus from RS than you do from SM.

I had started to put points in SM before I read his guide (link in the necro Moudly Tome Sticky).

    I could reroll :D

I had to wait a few levels to get my curses up to decrep.

I can get through mass knights casting IM + the winged wossnames with those 8 skels fairly easily on /players 8 without using CE.

My skellies are dying from the fire not so much fro being hit. That's why I went for a +SR wand to give them 49 FR (I think)

    edit
@ Thyiad - He keeps bone prisoning y damn portal so I can't get out!

    Good advice so far.

Indeed, maxing S. Mastery over R. Skeleton is preferable. But slvl 19 RS is nothing to be sneered at by a /p1 normal Diablo. To be entirely honest, I can't understand why they keep dying. They should be high enough in slvl to endure Diablo. Maybe it's because I haven't played a new summoner for over half a year.....

Use your Magi. Summon poison and cold ones. The poison Magi are superb for PMH, and their poison last for many minutes. Once poisoned, Diablo won't regenerate, which gives you time to go raise a new army if you need to.

Decrepify, as advised. Also, use a gemmed bow with sapphires to keep Diablo chilled. You're not doing much standing there anyway... might as well provide some ranged, chilled support.

Revives are near-immortal. Get a couple, and if Diablo focuses on them, your skellies will be free to chop away.

As a last resort, twink your merc with either Hone Sundan or Rattlecage for the CB. At /p1, Diablo will perish after several hits.

Open a TP way back, and Diablo will not Bone Prison it.

    Thanks for the advice Frost.

You may have missed it, but I lost all my grail and stashes some time ago. I didn't back it to a CD as that might lead to a duping error. I only have one copy, don't make backups.

    Started afresh on Wednesday.

In the event Thyiad was kind enough to rush me past Diablo with his Necro.

2 gold drops too, which he very kindly let me have for my grail:

I know you've done it now, but I played my necro recently untwinked, and found that without the +skills gear, your golem needs a few more points than Fishy's guide suggests. That way he actually can take a beating from diablo, leaving your skellies free to fight.

Clay (or Fire) Golem + Iron Maiden always sees me through if nothing else works. The only dangers are if D puts my necro in a Bone Prison or if I am not moving well to avoid his attacks (I really love to have good footspeed in this fight).

Each point in SM gives your skellies +8 life and +2 dmg. Each point in RS after the first 3 gives an average of +10 life and (after slvl 9) gives +2 dmg, which increases with additional skill points.

At slvl 20 SM and slvl 4 RS, you have: 3 skellies, 41-42 dmg, 191 life
At slvl 5 SM and slvl 19 RS (as in this situation), you have: 8 skellies, 47-49 dmg, 229 life

That is, if the Arreat Summit has correct data (I have doubts about the slvl 20 RS dmg bonus)

I'm 90% sure that monsters stop regenerating once you're a few screens away (the spawning distance)

    /end of big-headed corrections

Diablo (like all act bosses and most other 'special' bosses) does not regenerate at all. However, if you a get a couple of screens away for quite some time, he might "respawn", i.e. go back to full health. THAT is annoying...

Related to this; do long-duration dmg sources (e.g. poison, OW, traps, meteor flames) work while you're a few screens away (what I referred to as the spawning distance in my last post)? I believe they don't, your confirmation would be most appreciated.

Edit: FrostBurn, I quoted you among other inaccurate replies, because you're an experienced and knowledgable player who is often right. That and the fact that you're very helpful and will share your information with those in need (writing a 5 page post in the process  ), so I felt that you should have accurate info.

Yes they do. I tested this with the use of a maphack. I used the scroll lock option, and I can go upto a screen away I think. I could cast meteor, guided arrow, and even teleport on the monster.
