Nm andy/meph can turn a profit after awhile, try hording up gold and gambling ammys/circlets...just do what you can.

Well you could make something like a meteorb sorc for meph running with the moat trick. That doesn't really require good gear. Just get a body armor and headgear socketed with Ptopazes. If you're really poor you could even use Flawless topazes instead too. (With 4s body armor and 3s headgear Ptopaz vs FTopaz is 168% mf vs 140% mf)

Start with NM Meph for some basic gear and when you have enough fast cast and some decent items you can do Hell Meph. NM meph should drop you some decent mf gear for weapon switch fairly fast too.

If you haven't already, check out the Zealot guides to figure out what sort of gear you want to get.

If you have pgems, you can trade those for some decent unique and set items.

This is how I've made my equipment (and friends equipment) much better recently, since I just started. Save up pgems playing in nightmare and then head over the the trading forum for your realm on these forums. You can get a ton of good stuff really easily. At least easier than it would be to create a whole new high level MFing character which has to be equipped itself.

For example if you are on US West, look at this guys trade thread:
http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=676341
At the beginning of the thread he had lightsabre, barnar's, string of ears, shaftstop, guardian angel all selling for pgems. Granted Shaftstop is worth 20+ pgems, the others are a little cheaper. Some threads have BIN (buy it now) prices which make figuring things out a little easier. You can also check out the price check forum and search for equipment before you buy so you can tell if you are paying a reasonable price. There are also people on bnet starting games like 'my items your pgems' all the time.

I'd place an emphasis on surviving over killing, especially as a PvM zealot. You have to run into crowds of monsters all the time so having enough life steal, good resists, and high blocking are important. I use a 4 pdiamond shield with good base resists most of the time, because it makes it really easy to max out resists in hell. I also initially underestimated the awesomeness of crushing blow (read the guides), and that's helped me a lot. Also, if possible use and act 2 holy freeze merc and keep him with you whenever you can. He increases my survivability greatly, and if you give him a good polearm and some lifesteal (through the helm or weapon) it's not hard to keep him alive.

Agree... your realm's trading forum is a great place to get good gear for cheap. Lightsabre and Baranar's are viable Hell weapons, and tend to go for rather little.

With a bit of work gem-hunting in NM, you could have, say, LS/Baranar's, Duriel's Shell, String of Ears, Guillaume's Helm, Laying of Hands and other basic, viable equipment before too long.

Good luck with him... just takes a bit of work, but it's not too hard in NM.
