Hammerdins and HoZ

I recently lost my HC hammerdin and I want to rebuild. Problem is, I doubt I'll be able to find or trade for a HoZ as I'm kind of poor since he died. My question is, how succesful are your hammerdins without HoZ?I've gotten some recommendations for alternative shields, but I'm thinking the I'm going to be sorely missing the+skills bonus as well as the resistances. So how well do those of you that don't have a HoZ do?

Hammerdins without a HoZ arent done for... I mean you can still be fine without it. If your money isnt efficient enough just find like a +1 combat / resists kurast or something... THey arent too hard to find.

I remember the early days of the first ladder before I had a HoZ, I used a few different shields - magical and rare - that had 3 things incommon: 20/30 blocking, medium to high resistance and +1/2 palaskills.
Such shields are actually quite common if you bother to pick up rare and magic ones, they also work very well as a substitute for herald so you should have no bigger problems killing and surviving stuff.

My personal favorite back then was my precious Priest's Heraldic Shield of Deflecting with 2 perfect diamonds, 72 or so resist all

steelclash will get you through nm at least and is very easy to find.

i always liked finding the 4 socket high res ones to hold me over til i got my HoZ, with 4 pdiamonds you can break 100 res all which clears up a lot of your gear for +skills

I've already found 2 of the unique Troll's Nest ladder only shield (i forget the name) with 3 sockets and good res all. Still hoping for a HoZ though

Yeah, I'm basically in the same boat here. I'm using a "Rhyme" Bone sheild until I find/trade for something better. It gets the job done, but I should have made it in a Paladin-only sheild with some auto resist.

W/o HoZ your hammer damage will suffer badly but there is a way around look for Mechanic/Jewelers kurast/guilded/protector/aerin ect of deflection and socket it with couple pdiamonds if you lucky with resistance roll on such shields you will be running at ~50+resist all +20% block +30% faster block rate so the real lose in comparassion to HOZ will be deffense and skills.
Also hint: - often very often Anya quest in Nightmare net decent +1/2 paladin skills protector/aerin with massive resistance boost

put rhyme in anything high block % and you're set. that runeword (shael+eth) has everything you want. i've made my best ones in kurast shields and blade barriers. i've only ever found an eth hoz.. had 630 def on it. anyone got a spare zod?

I used a Rare Heraldic shield with +2 pally skills, increased chance of blocking, faster block rate and +30 all reists, with 2 sockets which I put Pdiamonds in. It's still muled since I got my HoZ, (thanks eldrich!) and I switch between it and Rhyme in a troll's nest ( shoulda made it in a pally shield too ~`-/

I posted this earleir, but I guess it got eaten. My hammerdin is now level 22, using steelclash and angelic set. I found a nice unique Monarch today with my necro and now have a HoZ and Wizzy waiting My thanks to everyone who posted their ideas.
