The guide's starting to come together really well nepeta.

If Thy didn't add it to the rune-runners section of the FAQ yet, I will soon. Might I suggest you edit the first post to reflect the current guide - some folks are too lazy to read/search back a couple of pages. :wink:


A few other thoughts on LK:
- Since 99.9% of the time you don't want to fight monsters, I went with a cold-based IronWolf for a mercenary. Who cares if he doesn't kill anything? Frozen monsters are safely ignored monsters, and I've never regretted that choice.

- but I did regret planning to use ES. In my opinion, it's simply not necessary for LK runs. Max-block and decent resists and life are all you need. Manaburn leapers are seldom a problem without ES, but they can become one with it. So I found ES to actually be less safe more of the time. :p

- You might want to mention the great jewels & charms that LK can give too; not just the runes.

If a mod could edit the title, which I can't, it still states the version being 1.0, when it actually is 3.0.

Greebo: I just tried the markup of the ubb, there was no intention of providing all possible rune drop combinations with a screenshot. Thx for input but I think I'll leave it for now. If there are yet more comments made, I may make a 4.0 version.

It might be obvious to everyone who has tried a run or two in their day, but I'd like just a little more info on how to find these superchests and how many there can spawn in one map, and any other details. A little more basics under "The Process", essentially.

This is a great guide though, and I'm sure I could figure my questions out myself by just doing a few runs, so just consider them a tip :)

Quickest way to find them is to teleport around with an eye on the minimap, looking for the characteristic big house/small house pair. That's it.

Since I only wanted her to run LK and wanted to see what a fully synergized max Energy Shield looked like, I didn't have a lot of skills left over. So, I also tried out Frozen Orb. Sometime in early Hell before I started to level her a bit, I also thought that with a huge mana pool, I might be able to also use Nova so that's where current skill points are going.

With only running LK in mind, I wanted to focus on FCR and FHR. Both are at the 8 frame breakpoints which seem to work out fine. The FHR BP is pretty easy to hit and does help out quite a bit in my experience so I'd really recommend getting that one.

As far as LK running goes, she is about as fast as my lightning-only LK runner except for when the huts are full of those LI creatures. At that point, the ES shines.

As others have mentioned, mana-burn is a concern so I threw a bunch of Sol runes into my armor to help out for the occasional mana-burner.

Overall, this is a viable LK-runner. I don't think she'd be as useful as a MF'er though since I don't have a lot of space to really pump up the MF. I also think there are some gear enhancements I could do to make her safer so I might play around with that. Also of note, I didn't assign any stat points other than STR until after I had made it to the Hell HF to collect my reward (Ko), so even with a small mana pool, she was pretty safe and easy to build. My build progression went something like this: max ES and TK until level 30. Then max FO. Return to finish ES & TK. Start Nova.

As a final note, I think that if you were going to go with ES, you'd need to make that your focus and plan your build accordingly. Insight is probably a requirement. The 200% FCR is probably going to be very tough since you'd have to invest in a lot more STR. But, it would be interesting to see if you could do it. Hmm, I might have to spend some more time on this one and see what I can come up with...

Not sure why Assassin isn't highly considered for LK running. I like mine a lot:

Skills: Max Burst of Speed, Max Shadow Warrior, 1 Dragon Flight (emergency escape), whatever else you want to progress to Hell Act 3 (I recommend max Tiger Strike/Dragon Tail MA-sin)
Attribs: Enough str for gear, enough dex for max or high block, rest in vit
Gear: Mine isn't even optimal, but... Harmony Bow (Jade Talon/Moser or Jade Talon/SS on switch in case you get in trouble), String of Ears, Vamp Gaze, Cats Eye, 40% FRW boots of your choice, Magefist (faster BoS/SW cast on run-start), either Raven Frost or Duriels for CBF, rest whatever... FHR and more DR is nice. Enigma would be ideal but that's kind of a catch-22 isn't it? (Guess she could always borrow one!)
Charms: all FRW charms. I like to leave a 4x4 space free, it's plenty for fast item-picking. That gives 22x3 = 66% FRW on charms alone if you carry a TP book. 136% FRW if you add the Cat's Eye and 40% Boots. And that's before the essential BoS and Vigor aura.

She runs FAST. (And she walks hilariously, heh...) Like I said mine isn't even optimal, I use four 7% FRW grands, three 5% FRW larges, I don't have magefist on her, my DR is low stat, I don't have any FHR, she is only L72, etc. And she can run the "4-hut" 6-chest LK map in about 45 seconds including everything - game creation, running to WP etc. And that includes picking up to TEN chests/logs/stashes/skeletons along the way. I'd definitely say she NEEDS that kind of map for efficiency, though.

She can use the Harmony bow most of the time, she runs so fast she just avoids any trouble. If she gets in trouble she has the Jade Talon / Mosers on switch to avoid any nastiness. My Shadow Warrior distracts enemies plenty on top of that, and on the very few occasions she is surrounded, Dragon Flight gets her out.

Oh, and assassins don't need keys. :thumbup:

* Actually, Bloodfist looks excellent for the 30% FHR, that would be far better for her than a little FCR.
* And screw Enigma, stick Stealth into a decent 2os elite light armor, that'd be quite nice.

Err. I looked around and can't find what you mean by Tele to the Right trick. Teleing in town? Anyway, what counts are the overall run times. I think Assassin is very competitive if not better (unless you are somehow teleporting in town, which seems pretty hacked up...) Today I want to work on buffing my equipment for my LK-running Assassin, at least an elite light Stealth would be nice. And I haven't had many problems with packs blocking chests, only very rarely. As I said Shadow Warrior is a good distraction, and leads them out / breaks them up without much or any delay. I could also cast the Valkyrie on the Harmony bow for a 2nd distraction I suppose (I never do.) My ASN can dart and dash around almost any pack of enemies at ridiculous speed. To each his own I guess. :wink:

"Teleport to the Right" is something a Sorc would do after opening a chest that spews more items than will display on the screen. It's a quick second look from a different location.

Ohomemgrande: Thank you very much for the additional input. Must be a rather safe experience, with all the Sols and Nightsmoke. Think I'll stick with the max block, max DR, 1mana/teleport however, after reading about your troubles with mana burn. Also the need for insight eliminates the Kelpie weapon for the mercenary. You could wield one yourself of course, but that'd get messy with resists and firepower.

Swordslash: Nice character, another of the things I never found time for, max frw sin. Good to read she does the job, CoS must be rather nice to have as well. Forgive me if I stick with my sorc though, as it's not only the speed that matters, see her other specs in post #1.

Although you've not really convinced me, thanks for the input :)

Your build looks good for being on the cheap for just LK runs, though I don't tend to want to spend all the time building up a character just to do one thing with them.

My build wasn't cheap, but she can solo hell without a problem. And LK I don't even need to hit any HP.

So she is a chain light/light/frozen orb source.

Everything went into vit except for what str was needed to wear her items.

At level 89 you will have maxed cl and l with having a point in nova and charged, but with +skills I have +10 to light skills and +13 once I get my torch.
Some charms with fhr and mf, gheeds, and a +1 light gc, soon to have an anni and torch, with the extra res from those will probably change around some other gear.

Several of the charms are not needed for running LK, but again this isn't a build just for doing this, but being able to be all around. She is a bit slower because she only has 40%fcr, but I haven't found it to be that much slower and what she lacks there she makes up for in killing power.

So feel free to do the other build if it really is all you want to do with her, but if you want a real build that won't have trouble in hell, I think my build is much better, but to each their own.

Great guide nepeta. I noticed in your guide, that you suggest that we put a hel rune in the storm shield and I would agree unless you say have a jewel of freedom with a good prefix on it. The jewel of freedom has a -15% req and maybe a good prefix. A hel rune is great if you do not have a jewel of freedom though. If you decide to update the guide again please include this option. I'd save the hel rune for unsocketing something. Thanks for the math to prove that it is better to have -15% req than the increased blocking from an eld rune. :thumbsup:
