    Guardian zZz

    This is my most recent guardian, a melee sorc. I have always wanted to build a melee sorc, but I knew it would take patience and an interesting gear combo. I would say this was the most difficult build I have finished yet. There are a number of factors against the sorc when it comes to melee; no inherent attack skill, a class based penalty for chance to hit, poor return on vita investment and poor breakpoints for blocking and hit recovery. I thought about going the ES route, but that seemed a little risky for HC. I instead went with orb as a support skill for some crowd control, and sought out items that raised max resists or provided damage reduction. I set out with the following goals:

    -max block, and fast
    -decent fhr
    -high defense
    -lots of damage reduction
    -maxed resists, over 75 if possible
    -decent killing power: max enchant, some crushing blow/deadly strike, etc
    -must look awesome! (heavy armor, big shield, no circlets)

    She ended up with:

    -75% block - 5 frame block rate
    -hell resists of 89/90/90/90
    -35% damage reduction
    -8 frame hit recovery
    -over 9k defense after shiver armor and defiance
    -an acceptable 4k AR after enchant (51% CtH hell Baal)
    -LCS damage of 2100-2700 (including 1 poison charm)
    -45% deadly strike, 35% crushing blow
    -looks awesome (IMO)

    That is some hearty defense, but it still leaves the problem of magic damage from succubi and unravellers. Those were her worst enemies, and they provided for some interesting fights. By time she got to the frozen river she started carrying a dwarf star in the stash for such situations. Offensively, she was a bit slow, but in most situations, fairly safe. I still felt like I was walking on eggshells compared to other more cookie cutter builds I've done.

    She was played all the way through as a meleer, first using frost nova as support, then pumping orb once it was avaiable. I tried to use orb mostly as crowd control and keep her in the fray. The only exceptions were the occasional dolls, or gloam bosses which she let Jemali take care of while she orbed. A 1 pt static field was used on bosses and large critters when necessary.


    Her Gear
    As I said, I didn't want to use dusk shrouds and circlets; I wanted her to look like a warrior! That somewhat limited my choices. Midgame she used Hexfire, Shaftstop, and the Orphans set for a long time. This is the end game combo I ended up with:

    -'Silence' Phase Blade
    -Guillaumes Face (fire facet)
    -Guardian Angel (PRuby)
    -Stormshield (PDiamond)
    -War Travellers
    -Laying of Hands
    -Credendum
    -Highlord's Wrath
    -Raven Frost
    -Rare ring with 10fcr, 7% life steal, +mana, psn res, mf, 'of the sun'
    -Dwarf Star in backpack
    -Switch:The Occulus
    -Switch:'Spirit' Monarch

    Defiance Merc has:
    -Reapers Toll
    -Harlequin Crest
    -'Prudence' eth Loricated Mail (underrated merc armor IMO)

    Questing through Hell
    Act one wasn't too bad. Teleporting on to shaman and archer packs proved quite fun. Act two was probably the most difficult. In the claw viper temple, she was getting badly stunlocked by the snakes. In the tomb, Unravellers and their cold immune skellies made for some slow going. Act 3 was better, despite one NDE involving a conviction/LE flayer. Cold immune flesh spawners were a pain in act 4, and the chaos sanctuary was as hard as I ever remember it being. One extra fast/mulitshot oblivion knight caused me alot of grief. Diablo himself was a peice of cake. Act 5 was full of annoying thorn critters and undead archers. The cold caves were slow going with lots of cold immunes and succubi. After a couple of nasty rolls with the ancients, they too succumbed. The Worldstone Keep was interesting; one level had multiple gloam boss packs and champs. She did not hesitate orbing them despite her usual MO. The next level had a Death Lord bosspack and succubi right at the door. Baal's second wave was a huge pain, not scary just very slow going. The others, including the minons weren't too bad. Baal, as always, was cake.

    zZz will likeley be retired after a very difficult journey. She was a very fun challenge, she just won't be very good at running targets for MF. She looked awesome, and she killed Baal with her bare hands, I'm content with that.

    From the Arreat Summit:
    Code:
    Chance to Hit: 100 * AR / (AR + DR) * 2 * alvl / (alvl + dlvl)
    
    where AR = Attack Rating of Attacker; DR = Defense Rating of Defender; alvl = Level of Attacker; dlvl = Level of Defender.
    
    The Class Bonus to level of attacker is:
    
    20 for Barbarians and Paladins
    15 for Assassins
    5 for Amazons and Druids
    -10 for Necromancers
    -15 for Sorceresses
    
    So, from how I read it, a sorc at level 80 is getting the same treatment in the chance to hit calculation as a level 45 barb! Ouch! It looks to affect her chance to be hit greatly as well.

    Congratulations on a great achievement. I've had great trouble finishing mine in SC, so extra :thumbsup: for a HC version.

    That penalty is not so nice :( Sorcs already have such a hard time with melee.

    That is one nice character, and a lovely combination of gear with a specific end in mind. Particularly impressed that you used 'Silence', and in a low base damage weapon to boot! Obviously you were more concerned with IAS, DS, and CB to do most of the leg work as opposed to pure damage output. I'm guessing the 75% Resist All was a major attraction?

    Bad for me, never enjoy playing sorcs, but who knows, maybe one day I will remember how great this write-up is and make a melee sorceress for my self... Very inspirational build, nice! :)

    Awesome! I really like the Silence. And a sub-800 life melee character making Guardian really is a cool accomplishment.

    I'm surprised you didn't have a Raven Frost with more AR; it's not like you needed one with 20 dex, right?

    Why haven`t I read this earlier?

    That is one great write-up and a fantastic character, hats off to you. I hope there will be many more threads like this as this was very enjoyable.
