    Guardian Nec, Summoner (and Intro)

I just completed my first SP Guardian earlier, and figured I could knock out two birds with one stone by posting an introduction in the same thread as the Guardian post.

 Soooo... as you can see, my forum name is LiquidClear. I'm a 22-year old college student and I've been playing D2 on and off for ~9 years, always on battle net until I recently discovered the joys of single player! I created an account here in 2006, but have always been a lurker, just reading build guides and the like and never really posting. Now that I've switched to single player, I think I'd like to become more of a part of the community since I'm not online playing with people anymore :p

I guess my goals are to make some high-end runewords and characters that can MF or just slaughter stuff on p8 without trouble. I've had that kind of build on battle.net, but with the economy being so awful, I didn't get any satisfaction since I didn't feel like I'd earned it at all. So, here I am in SP where I have to earn it myself. :) I always enjoyed forums where there was an innate level of respect present, so I think that I will like this one just fine.

    Guardian Nec

I saw someone posting about the character named "Pindle Runner" earlier not being a very creative name; well I think this one probably takes the cake as far as lack of imagination goes. I created him a while back when my internet was down, and wasn't really thinking I'd play him much when my internet came back. But, in the past week I started up SP more seriously, and after my sorc died I wanted to play in Hell but didn't want to risk losing my Barb or run a whole new char all the way up... so I got back on Nec.

His route was an interesting one. He plowed through Norm on p8 with no issues. However, as I got into NM, I decided that I was bored with a summoning necro, a build I have played numerous times throughout the years, so I decided I'd respec to a Bone necro. I completed Act 1 in NM as a summoner on p8 while searching for some gear that would more suit a bone nec, and managed to make a Spirit and an Insight. With those in hand, I became Nec the Bonemancer.

As a bone necro, I played through nm on p3, but things were a little bit hairy by the end of NM. He had more freedom of movement, but really lacked in the killing power department, so I parked him after defeating NM baal @ level 71 and played other characters. Notable find was an Um rune from the Infector of Souls while rerunning NM Chaos Sanctuary hoping to find gear that would make me serviceable in Hell.

After my level 77 Sorceress died, I decided to respec Nec back into a Summoner and proceed through Hell. I twinked him a little bit with gear found on other characters, but as you'll see, it's not exactly the best job of twinking  He walked through Hell on p1; I didn't have the patience for his level 25 skeles and CE to kill slower on a higher setting. Also, I just wanted to make sure this character survived to Guardian. The Hell walk was uneventful; lots of unique items dropped, but they were all mostly useless. Best rune drop was a Fal in the Lost City.

Acts 1 through 4 were no problem at all, and even the Maggot Lair/Arcane Sanctuary didn't take all that long. Act 5 was where I finally had some minor nuisances. I tend to be pretty lazy while playing a Summoner, and those Cats who throw the spears kept me on my toes working harder than I'd have liked. Minor annoyances aside, I made it past the Ancients without much happening. When I finally got to the Throne of Destruction, I unfortunately had to back out and reroll for different monsters. There was an impenetrable wall of unique Ghoul Lords, Gloams, and Unravelers that mowed my minions down before they could even touch their HP bars.

The next time the monsters were much easier. There were Death Lords in the Throne, but none of them were unique, so they just made for some killer Revives. :D The first 4 waves dropped like flies with CE, although Lister was FI/PI and took over 3 minutes to kill even after all his buddies had been dropped and Corpse Exploded. Baal took nearly 5 minutes to kill, but with Clay Golem and Decrepify, he never killed a Skeleton or even really hurt my Merc or Golem.

And so, Nec succeeded in becoming my first SP Guardian!

    Standing triumphantly over Baal's corpse!

    The Build:

I pretty much did your typical Summoning Necro, with my final skill points synergizing Bone Armor since... well, it's Hardcore and I was being extra careful about dying after losing a Sorc. The twinked on gear was nothing special, with the exception of the SoJ that I found yesterday with my Barb. He needs more +skills to increase his kill speed, which I might be able to get soon. I'm 1x Um away from making the "Bone" runeword, which could help.

So there you have it! I'd love to change his name from Nec, but is this possible/frowned upon?

I'm not sure what his purpose will be; I'll probably just run him around random places in Hell hoping for items to drop. What do most people do with a Summoning Necro for MF?... although I have no Mf on him :p

Re: Guardian Nec, Summoner (and Intro)

Congrats on the Guardian and welcome to the forums!

Massive style points for using Iratha's set. I enjoy your avatar too... "Happy trees"

Name changes through ATMA are perfectly acceptable, as far as I understand it, although it will actually copy your character, so you'll have to go delete the old one ASAP to avoid a duplicate item nightmare.

As far as MFing with a Summoning Necro, I think the most common runs are Pits and WSK/Baal, although I don't know that I would run the latter too extensively in HC without some gear upgrades. They can really run pretty much anything, being extremely safe, but are not the most efficient with act bosses.

    Welcome!
I used to be a lurker too, and walked off the shadows today also so I'm pretty new too. I guess it must be the time of the year :scratchchin:

    Gratz on your guardian!
Cool reading, I'm surprised you didn't have problems in the Maggot Lair. I just don't like that place.-
    For MF, I'd do Pits
    Awesome: Iratha's Set ! I'm missing the gloves :(

    Cheers

I'm surprised you guys thought the Iratha's was stylish, because I was glad to finally get rid of it today :p

Quick question: does the players setting carry over from one game to the next? IE: If I do a Meph run on p5 and then S&E, make a new game, I have to retype /players 5, correct? (Pretty sure I know the answer, but thought I'd ask and check)

Re: Guardian Nec, Summoner (and Intro)

Iratha's set isn't something you ever see used beyond early level twinking really... So yeah, that's stylish! You'll see a hundred Pat's or guardians wearing Skin of the Vipermagi or similar, but never anyone still using low sets that late in the game. Nicely done!

IIRC, when you S&E and then make a new game, the previous /p setting carries over to the new game. Until you change characters or exit D2 all together...

Wow, that's actually not the answer I was expecting. I'm annoyed by the small stuff, so when I'm running something repeatedly I don't like having to stop and type, :p. Thanks for the answer!

Greets, nice to meet you. Summoning necros are awesome. Go those high runeword gear's. Pits are good places to get base items for them. 9 Years makes you a veteran whether you like it or not. You and I are in the same basket except for age. Don't forget to check out the Multiplayer Subforum here, we're always in need of more players over there. Cheers, see you around!
