Guardian Mallorn - MS/FA Bowazon

I fell in love with this game way back in 1.09, but haven't made a proper bowazon since I took one to 99 on BNet (*shudder*) back in the cow-running glory days of that patch. After accumulating some decent wealth in HC, I figured it would be a better use of a Windforce to try and make it to Guardian rather than let it collect e-dust indefinitely. I created Mallorn as a bit of a throwback to the aforementioned character, a Multi-shot bowazon.

I couldn't go pure MS for HC, so I opted for Freezing Arrow with an 'Ice' bow on switch. I made it in a Blade Bow for potential use on a merc for another build. Two bows of course means no CtA buffer, but it (obviously) didn't end up being a problem.

Let's first get to the stats/info and a full dump (with the fat trimmed), and then I'll get to her journey and some thoughts on the build.

The Journey

Normal was basically a blur of Envy jewel carnage. Nightmare was a blur of Kuko Shakuku carnage. She leveled on Elditch/Pindle until 73 for Windforce, and then we took Hell on. Hell was taken at a mix of /p5 and /p3, with all quests completed, as it was a good balance of complete annihilation while still maintaining a bit of a challenge and keeping things from getting too dangerous. Still we had to be vigilant as with right around 1k life, getting too comfortable is a surefire way to end up dead.

Hell Act 1 (/p5)
Multi-shot pretty much just tore through everything, honestly. FA got some use in bigger groups but was mostly reserved for any PIs (zombie bosses and ghosts). We met our first PI/CI in the jail, but Magic Arrow was more than up to the task, especially with the knockback on WF. Andariel was taken with a mix of hiding behind the merc and running around the blood pool shooting Guided Arrows her way.

Hell Act 2 (/p5)
Things became slightly trickier here with the prevalence of unleechables, but still MS reigned supreme. FA also got more of a showcase since PIs started cropping up, and the added crowd control of the Holy Freeze aura was nice. For maybe the first time ever, the Maggot Lair was FUN! A nice straight line for FA to just rip through was very, very satisfying. Same goes for the Arcane Sanctuary. It sure is fun watching frost novas proc as the arrows fly down the line of monsters, piercing their way to utter destruction.

Hell Act 3 (/p5)
Not much to say really, smaller monster got completely ruined by Multi-shot, but there was a bit of trouble with some of the tougher monsters (Thorned Hulks, for example) being CI. In general, MS was starting to lose some steam at this point, but still worked wonders as a positional destroyer:



Hell Act 4 (/p3)
Dialed it down to /p3 not necessarily for any danger reasons, but mostly because I didn't want to be going back to town too much to re-fill arrows. The lowered players setting re-instated Muilt-shot's reign of terror, and we basically walked our way all the way to the CS. The Forge was a Ko. Diablo fell to a mixture of FA, MA and GA, as per the norm for bosses.

Hell Act 5 (/p3)
The final act was pretty much a cakewalk, really. Big open spaces make for a MS bowazon's dream, and we were fortunate enough not to get any nasty monster rolls along the way that we couldn't handle, especially with the terrain to use to our advantage.



I was a bit worried for Nihlathak, but I just flung arrows from out of sight distance and before I knew it he was dead. The Ancients were a bit tricky, but once they were separated the merc could tank them well enough for us to get by. The WSK and Throne were simple, even a PI Lister didn't slow her down. The Baal fight was longer than I would have liked, but such is life for a bowazon! She mostly used FA and Magic Arrow, trying to stay out of mana burn range as best as she could. It took about 200 arrows to kill Baal, and she finally made Guardian at level 85.



Some Thoughts
- Multi shot is FUN. It's also really nice using the pointer distance to tighten and spread the volley of arrows, depending on what is best for the situation.
- It's also fun spamming MS and finding corpses over a screen-length away
- Freezing Arrow and Ice are a devastating combo. The only problem I had with it was mana, as it depleted her bulb super fast. If I was making a dedicated FA-zon, I would definitely think about getting some more mana oriented gear on her for convenience.

I always love your pat/mat/guardian writeups. Really great job. Character looks fun, and some super swag gear for hc. Have you played a lot of hc on your current installation other than klaus and mallorn?

Thanks! As for HC play; not a ton of general play outside of Klaus and Stevesy (I and II) in the UT99er thread. I do have a fair amount of tournament characters (mostly failed, and some successful) under my belt from over the years, though they don't contribute a ton of gear to the stash usually. I'll probably do some more general playthroughs of some builds I've always wanted to try in HC now that I have lots of gear to deed use for them, as time allows.

Very cool. Reminds me of this Bowie with WF and Ice that I played last year, but with focus on FA and Strafe/WF just vs CIs and to fill up mana :D very different chars despite the same weapons. :)

I've never really played around with Multishot, and this now got me committed to give it a shot (har har). MS instead of strafe for my Ice-wielding Ice Maiden, confirmed! Very nice character @Pb_pal and HC no less. Well done!
