This is a Fist of the Heavens paladin. Since pharphis is pretty much always singing praises about how wonderful this build is, and I had one way back when playing on the realms, I figured I would give this build another go. The quick and dirty summary of this build is, it’s a hipster build, and very much so. FredofErik who I quested alongside of his lightning sorc can vouch for how many times I said that throughout the play through. If you are facing a ton of undeads, and only undeads, the build is great. But if you aren’t its incredibly slow go with a single target 1 second timer attack. I think I was somewhere around level 84 again when we finished with the random Maus/AT runs thrown in.

Build and Gear Progression:
The build for a FoH pally was standard skill wise. Early levels I used one pointers such as holy fire, holy freeze, etc. until holy shock became available. Since holy shock was a synergy I pumped that until level 30 when FOH became available. After that I maxed FoH and conviction, followed by its two synergies holy shock and holy bolt. Spare skill points after that were dumped into holy shield for better blocking/defense. Stats once again, enough strength for gear, enough dex to maintain max block, rest into vitality, none in energy.
Gear for early leveling was a standard array of random set pieces that I usually throw together until level 15 when I could equip ravenclaw, after that I think I relied on cleglaws and other various items to carry me to level 30 at which point caster gear was equipped including spirit sword/shield, vmagi, peasant crown, and other exceptional pieces of equipment. Gear was eventually replaced as other items became available resulting in the end game setup you see above. The setup allows max block, max res (over maxed fire/lightning), some DR%, and a decent amount of magic find. Some changes would obviously be made if I were to ever get an enigma assembled to equip and hit the last fcr breakpoint. Without enigma, hitting the last fcr breakpoint was pretty unnecessary, other than firing off holy bolts one frame faster, which wasn’t worth the sacrifice in over stacked res/mf. Thanks to Fred for the CTA base, which ended up being much better than my previous CTA with +4 bo, and frozzzen for trading me the spirit base.
Questing and Gameplay:
Questing was done with Fred’s lightning sorc, ultimately he was going to get to an end game build that included infinity, but until then my high level conviction obviously helped his damage quite a lot. Unfortunately being a single target attack, that really only works its best on undead, I was at most times just a walking aura that would randomly snipe a monster here and there. There was a great discrepancy between the number of monsters fred killed and the number of monsters that I killed, except in Act 2 where pretty much everything is undead. The chaos sanctuary wasn’t too bad either since a large amount of monsters in there are also undead. In most other cases though his lightning or chain lightning would flatten the groups of enemies quicker than I ever could with a one second attack. General game play consisted of Fred teleporting around casting lightning, and me charging with vigor on the switch cta, finding a group of monsters, switch to conviction/foh, snipe away, and move to next group. No real significant problems other than some slight boredom as the setup I had was pretty much all around safe.
With all that being said, could I take this build through on its own? Probably not, it would take too much time for my patience to allow unless I could somehow remove the timer, or make every monster in the game undead. In terms of magic finding on my own though, this guy is good at both Mausoleum and Ancient Tunnels. Mausoleum is all undeads, and Tunnels is mostly undeads, and all the lightning immunes can be broken disregarding some unlucky combination of mods. Definitely much slower than a sorc, but much safer, and charge while not as fast as teleport, is still a pretty good substitute.
Interesting finds:
Nothing too amazing that I recall, I have a screen shot of Fred’s forge which was a fail rune. I don’t think we went back to do mine at the time. I did find a legendary mallet in one of my attempted AT runs, but it ended up being stone crusher so I was disappointed, but still a grailer.
Future Plans:
Mausoleum and Ancient Tunnel runs every now and again, also some chaos/baal runs with the MP crew if it ever comes up. While not as fast as a sorc in either of the two major magic find areas, it’s definitely a good change of pace (although the build is still hipster, I’m pretty sure it’s the singer barb of the paladin class that will never catch on quite as well).

The build for a FoH pally was standard skill wise. Early levels I used one pointers such as holy fire, holy freeze, etc. until holy shock became available. Since holy shock was a synergy I pumped that until level 30 when FOH became available. After that I maxed FoH and conviction, followed by its two synergies holy shock and holy bolt. Spare skill points after that were dumped into holy shield for better blocking/defense. Stats once again, enough strength for gear, enough dex to maintain max block, rest into vitality, none in energy.
Gear for early leveling was a standard array of random set pieces that I usually throw together until level 15 when I could equip ravenclaw, after that I think I relied on cleglaws and other various items to carry me to level 30 at which point caster gear was equipped including spirit sword/shield, vmagi, peasant crown, and other exceptional pieces of equipment. Gear was eventually replaced as other items became available resulting in the end game setup you see above. The setup allows max block, max res (over maxed fire/lightning), some DR%, and a decent amount of magic find. Some changes would obviously be made if I were to ever get an enigma assembled to equip and hit the last fcr breakpoint. Without enigma, hitting the last fcr breakpoint was pretty unnecessary, other than firing off holy bolts one frame faster, which wasn’t worth the sacrifice in over stacked res/mf. Thanks to Fred for the CTA base, which ended up being much better than my previous CTA with +4 bo, and frozzzen for trading me the spirit base.
Questing and Gameplay:
Questing was done with Fred’s lightning sorc, ultimately he was going to get to an end game build that included infinity, but until then my high level conviction obviously helped his damage quite a lot. Unfortunately being a single target attack, that really only works its best on undead, I was at most times just a walking aura that would randomly snipe a monster here and there. There was a great discrepancy between the number of monsters fred killed and the number of monsters that I killed, except in Act 2 where pretty much everything is undead. The chaos sanctuary wasn’t too bad either since a large amount of monsters in there are also undead. In most other cases though his lightning or chain lightning would flatten the groups of enemies quicker than I ever could with a one second attack. General game play consisted of Fred teleporting around casting lightning, and me charging with vigor on the switch cta, finding a group of monsters, switch to conviction/foh, snipe away, and move to next group. No real significant problems other than some slight boredom as the setup I had was pretty much all around safe.
With all that being said, could I take this build through on its own? Probably not, it would take too much time for my patience to allow unless I could somehow remove the timer, or make every monster in the game undead. In terms of magic finding on my own though, this guy is good at both Mausoleum and Ancient Tunnels. Mausoleum is all undeads, and Tunnels is mostly undeads, and all the lightning immunes can be broken disregarding some unlucky combination of mods. Definitely much slower than a sorc, but much safer, and charge while not as fast as teleport, is still a pretty good substitute.
Interesting finds:
Nothing too amazing that I recall, I have a screen shot of Fred’s forge which was a fail rune. I don’t think we went back to do mine at the time. I did find a legendary mallet in one of my attempted AT runs, but it ended up being stone crusher so I was disappointed, but still a grailer.
Future Plans:
Mausoleum and Ancient Tunnel runs every now and again, also some chaos/baal runs with the MP crew if it ever comes up. While not as fast as a sorc in either of the two major magic find areas, it’s definitely a good change of pace (although the build is still hipster, I’m pretty sure it’s the singer barb of the paladin class that will never catch on quite as well).
