In this thread I will present you my berserker barb, dedicated Pit-runner. Here I'll skip basics about pitzerkers, so if you want to know how to start your pitzerker, I recommend you take a look at this great guide which covers everything you need to know. I'll talk about my interpretation of pitzerker and why I built mine the way I did.

Name is kinda strange. It is inspired by one orc from LotR, but with extra "k" letter in the name to twist tongues a bit more than needed. Some people would say "Grip trolling supplies".

    CHARACTER

    Name: Grishknakh
    Class: Barbarian
    Build: Berserker
    Level: 96
Area: Pit level 1 and 2

Grishknakh started his career before 2013. summer MFO and then I played him there for 25 hours. During that time he was still named CookieMonster, but eventually he ate enough cookies (look at pic!) and grew up to be ugly hairy barb with orc smell and mammoth strength. Then he renamed to more appropriate name cuz with name "CookieMonster" you can't expect to attract many ladies. Anyway during that MFO he was still cheaper variant of pitzerker as you can see if you click on link.

He started as level 90 barb, and leveled up to level 96 by doing p1 pit running. Quite a lot of running indeed, but it is not problem until level 95. On level 95 you really cannot to afford to die too often. Died like 3-4 times and that delayed reaching level 96 considerably. Since leveling was on my mind, I have built my berserker to be sturdy enough so I don't die too often so I can reach level 96 eventually. Going for 97 is not something I think is really doable. It is very time consuming for sure and penalty of death is very big. And well, berserkers are not exactly safest characters to play.

After that first MFO, I played pitzerker on next two MFO's doing total of ~7800 pitruns total. Normally I ran with him outside MFO too. Most notable thing about my pitzerker is he found 2 Tyrael's, and even more awesome they were both found during first day of each MFO. For more details check 2014 summer MFO and 2015 summer MFO threads. Warning, don't think this is normal occurrence and that farming rare items is easy job. This is crazy efficient MF char, but we talk about huge luck there. Reality is you don't wanna know expected time to find Tyrael's, you would give up immediately.

During his career Gris was transformed to singer twice to do comparison to berserker variant. Comparison between those barb variants are presented here: MF Pit Singer, comparation with berserker.

    STATS

    Strength: 91 (175)
    Dexterity: 164 (171)
    Vitality: 310 (322)
    Life: 2605 on swords
    Mana: 682 on switch
    Attack Rating: 10704
    Item Find: 55%
    Magic Find: 776/656

    Skills:
    20 Berserk
    20 Sword Mastery
    1 Inc. Speed
    1 Nat. Resist
    20 Howl
    20 Item Find
    1 BO
    1 BC
    rest Shout

Overall, quite typical berserker build. Skill-wise I completely followed advice from linked pitzerker guide. Stat-wise I distributed stats in a certain way to fulfill my goals. My goals were: to have enough Attack Rating (what is enough I will explain later under Attack Rating discussion) and to have enough life to keep me alive to be able to level up. I aimed at having 2600 life with swords out, I find it enough for comfortable running. Most berserkers go for like 2200-2300 life, but it is a bit lowish for my taste. I like at least 2500+ for more comfort. Anyone has to find his own ideal life to aim for.

    EQUIPMENT

My pitzerker is most typical pitzerker there can be, apart from budget variant. Basically anyone could aim to build this kind of zerker. Nothing innovative or new there, really. If you have some kind of fancy gear, you could aim to build something better, but this is best I can do.

Most of the listed gear is self found. Amulet is from Nulio as is Insight base from merc, War Travelers are from horseheadnebula, 3 charms are traded for, and the rest is self found.

First of all, I have 1.07 Cham Shako, but I value 1.13 one higher because of extra mana. I think mana is quite important on berserker to work nicely and to play him comfortably. Playing zerker with less than 550 mana is a trouble to me cuz then I have to think too much about potions because of mana burn. More about mana later.

Switch is to get 2 skills for 55% item find and to hit 105% FCR breakpoint. All details are explained in linked guide.
Alternative I'd consider is to use 2 skills amulet with big MF and then fcr MF ring for more profit, but those have to be really good. If you need more mana, simplest way is to use high mana ring instead of Nagelring and to sacrifice some MF, or to use Wizzy on switch and drop 1% in item find... There are certainly options and you can play around. DO NOT use Ravenfrost though. You don't wanna shatter your corpses cuz of cold damage.

I aimed to have 776/656 MF breakpoint, mostly based on my switch where breakpoint is exactly on 656. Breakpoints can be checked via dropcalc in say ATMA, or they are somewhere listed...

Tip on survivability. Apart from having enough life, lightning resistance is important to have to some degree because from time to time it is lite enchanted monster what will kill you. Those bolts could hurt a lot if they are released in certain angle at you. That's why I have like 60% lite res, to keep those situations less dangerous. Cold resistance is not really important, but ok to have some.

    Map

Map is very important part of your character. It will make your character much better if map is good. My map is, simply put, amazing. If you should pick top 5 pit maps in SPF history, I'm quite confident my map would be good candidate for that list. How amazing my map is I didn't realize until not so long ago. I basically ran map for thousands of runs in less efficient way and I wasn't aware of that. I ignored one area of map which I thought spawns bosses less frequent than it really does. I have done new 1300 test runs to see what kind of map I actually have.

Map is big, but very simple to play. I follow yellow line. Yes, I literally teleport in basically 2 directions. Very easy to play, really. This red area is area I ignored on last two MFO's cuz I thought boss spawns there once in 5 runs which didn't make it worth to hit and I made it simple to play in straight line instead. But recent tests have shown boss spawns there in like once per 3 runs, so that area increases my maps average considerably and area is totally worth to hit.

Maps average number of bosses without that red area is 8.05 based on over 2k tests done.
In last 1300 test runs done with that red area, maps average number of bosses is 8.391. Incredible number.

So, not only map is super simple to play, but spawns bosses way above average for pitmaps. Map is my biggest strength, the reason why is this pitzerker so efficient and why I can play him very efficiently throughout whole MFO. This is also kinda strange map cuz there are no devilkin nests in pit 1 period. I'm actually not even sure have I ever seen devilkin shaman spawn. Maybe they spawn in area of map I don't visit near entrance to pit 2, who knows. But definitely thing I cannot say I witnessed on other pitmaps I rolled.

    GAMEPLAY VIDEOS

First of all, I apologize I don't have video where I hit that red area, but I'm not really willing to adapt my playing to windowed mode again. It takes some effort since I can't click at the edge of screen (no screencapture cuz of megalag), teleporting is shorter, fast positional teleporting is also different... it takes time to adapt to windowed mode, but videos I recorded are enough to demonstrate how this barb works.

    ATTACK RATING

Okay, I said I invested dexterity to have enough AR. What is enough? I aimed to have 95% chance to hit against Devilkins (non-stoneskin) since those are most annoying monsters to face. To know that, I needed to know how much defense do they have. Here are numbers I found on wiki. Number in bracket is defense they have against Grief (Grief has -25% monster defense, or -12.5% defense against boss monsters like those):

    Devilkin: 1155 (1011)
    Archer: 1485 (1300)
    Stalker: 1568 (1372)
    Bone Warrior: 1616 (1414)

For my level 96 barb to have 95% cth against devilkins, he needs to have 10275 AR. But, checking at other monsters too, I saw that on 10536 AR I get 92% cth against skeletons, and on 10655 93% against archers. So, it makes most sense to aim for 10655 AR cuz benefit of it is higher than to stay on 10275 AR and pump rest to Strength.

So, first sensible "breakpoint" to aim is to have 93% cth against archers who have 1300 defense against Grief. it depends on your level, but you can calculate number yourself. With such AR you would have 95% cth against Devilkins, 93% vs archers and 92% vs stalkers and skeletons.

Next sensible AR to aim for with same logic of most gain is when you can hit 94% cth on archers. At the same time you would hit 93% cth against skeletons and stalkers, and then your chance to hit will be 95-94-93-93%. For a level 96 barb it happens on 11810 AR.

Next sensible point to aim is to have, by logic, 95-95-94-94 etc. You would have to do math for your barb, but my needs to hit 10655 AR (and I have 10.7k), and like that I've run whole my career.

    GIFF ME MANA

Like I said, I value mana quite high on berserker. Reason is simple - I want as simple playstyle as possible. By having low mana you must think too much about potions because you have to drink them almost every time when mana burn pack hits you. As a result of that, you waste more time on seeking and picking up potions, instead of focusing to pure farming, and it burns your energy faster. And mana burn annoys you.

For all stated reasons I have ~680 mana to reduce need to drink potions to a very minimum. I can comfortably ignore mana burn monsters and am drinking potions only when my life drops. As a result of that, I pick potions much rarer than I would if my mana was low. As a result of that I can focus more on farming, am not annoyed by mana burn at all and am playing much more relaxed (and can stay at peak performance much longer).

Normally, every player must see for himself does he want higher mana on his zerker or he doesn't care. I myself wouldn't find comfortable to play zerker with less than 550 mana, and by having 680 mana I can almost entirely ignore mana issues. As long as I start new run with 50 mana or more, it is enough to get me to pit. Think about advantages before you discard mana as something not important at all. If I didn't have all those mana charms, I would really use some rare high mana ring instead of Nagel. MF breakpoint less, but much more comfortable (and hence more efficient) playing.

    EFFICIENCY

Pitzerker stands as best MF char in diablo world for a reason. SPF Hall of Records thread compares various builds in efficiency, and pitzerkers are clearly on top, followed by pitsingers. Sorc is the only class that can partially challenge pitzerker, but she is still like 27% less efficient character if we compare very best players of both characters.

Also you can see in tables how efficient pitzerker can be. Normally those results are posted after only 50 runs. What about MFO type of efficiency when you play character for hours every day? Well, it clearly depends on how much stuff you pick up, but you can still stay inside ~7% of your best possible result. In short pitzerker with crazy map can stay below 4.5 seconds per bosspack for whole duration of MFO.

My last semi-MFO effort was during last two days of MFO with sample of 11 hours of playing in 2 days and 700 runs done:

That sample is, given by map average bosspack count on 1300 test runs, ~4.327 seconds per bosspack. For duration of MFO in 10 days my efficiency would drop, but I assume not above 57 seconds or 4.38 s/b. But, that is to be tested in the future maybe.

On last 2 MFOs I didn't hit that red area (hence hitting ~8.05 bosspacks per run), but data is still valuable of what berserker can do for a whole MFO.
2014 summer MFO (for details check posted link to this MFO)
    Runs done: 3650
    Avg running time: 56.454 s
Estimated time invested in MFO: 57 hours 15 minutes

2015 summer MFO (picked more stuff than usual)

Anyway, yes, pitzerker is the char for you if you like efficient farming.

    FINAL THOUGHTS

My pitzerker is most typical pitzerker with solid gear and godly map which makes him what he is - CookieMonster. Okay, he was that. Nevermind.

My plan for a future is to get better charms, and maybe some superfancy 2 skills 30+ MF amulet so I can use fcr 15MF ring with mana and additions. I don't believe I can craft something better than what I have since I already did like 5k caster amulet crafts and ended using Nulio's ex amulet cuz it is better than anything I crafted.

Thank you for reading, I hope it was an interesting one, and cya in future MFO's cuz this is the char I will play there if I participate.

Said it once I played a pitzerker, say it again here, it's an amazing build. That map is amazing, as is the plethora of [important prefix]/MF charms.

    Thanks for the great write-up

As I mentioned in the other thread, I was especially interested in the part about attack rating. I just recently upgraded my lvl 92 pitzerker from Isted Stormshield to Gemmed Phaseblade, and the change in survivability called for some adjustments. I actually ended up with less life than before (~2300), enough dex for +11000 ar after gear, and rest in strength (not much, I think I'm at 140+ after gear). Right now he's pretty much whatever the melee equivalent of glass cannon is, but can still kill very quickly and survive quite well. He kills most things with one or two hits, and the fact that he can actually land those hits makes a lot of difference in regards of survivability.

(Btw, I'm still not quite sure how to calculate the AR correctly. I found one calculator online but that confused me too  Too long time without doing maths I guess)

He currently only has 400+ mana after BO, but I don't feel like that's a huge problem. I'm really sensitive with my rejuvs, so when I see/feel life/mana dropping down to uncomfortable numbers, I just pop a purple and continue. Sure, the potion management slows me down, but for now, I'm quite ok with it. I might try exchanging few mf charms with life/mana charms to see if that makes a difference.

I still haven't found a Cham, so I'm running with Trang's Belt and Rare gloves with ias and mf. When/If I finally find that Cham, I need to make more adjustments, given that the Trang's gives good boni to life and mana.

I've rolled good amount of maps, and I'm currently running a very intriguing one. Great amount of bosspacks, fairly straightforward but still maybe a tad bit too long and hard to navigate (have to zig-zag to hit all the boss spots). It's of the "no devilkin nests"-variety, that's a plus. One minus is, that I have to tele "down" from Outer Cloister to reach the entrance, so I don't get the full benefit of fast-teleporting. I need to test it more, my best time is around 1:15 I think, but I feel that's mostly just me not playing very well. Too careful, too ocd, bad inventory management etc. Just have to practice I guess, but I feel I'm getting too old for playing quickly :) He's still very fun to play, though, even when not going for full effiency.

So thanks again for the good read, and thanks to @Fabian for the original guide. Pitzerker is one of my favorite characters, and I feel it has actually made me better at this game, what with all the fast teleing and switching and almost-dying.

    @Burgomaster3
Don't know about online calculators, but I calculate AR manually.

Before reading long post of mine, tl;dr version suggests that you level up your barb more before turning him to pitzerker. Explanation is below.

Formula to determine chance to hit goes as:

    chance to hit = 2 * (your AR)/(your AR + defenders DEF) * (your lvl)/(your lvl + defenders lvl)

Before you go into calculation process, you must determine defense of monsters you are trying to hit. You must include the fact Grief gives -12.5% base defense of boss monsters (or their defense is 0.875 * original defense). Those are the numbers I shared in thread for monsters in pit WITHOUT stone skin modification. With stone skin their base defense is doubled, and for pitmonsters that happens in 23% cases, or 1 in 4 bosses will be stone skin, 3/4 will have normal defense. Actually champions also have normal defense, so it is more than 3/4 of encountered opponents.

More practical is to calculate desired "breakpoint" at hitting (I assume diablo works on breakpoints in all parts, so if you have 91.9% chance to hit by equation, game calculates as if it is 91%. I could be wrong about that though, but I try to get above certain breakpoints).

First sensible "breakpoint" I listed is when you have 93% chance to hit against archers (1300 defense, level **). Why is that I explained in first post.
You want to determine your AR needed to hit those "breakpoints", so we must work the equation around a bit to get to:

    AR needed = (cth * defense)/(lvlfactor - cth)

cth = chance to hit. If you want to hit 95% cth against something, instead of cth you simply put 0.95.
defense = defense of monster AFTER -12.5% def Grief modification
lvlfactor = constant that depends on your level and level of monsters you are trying to hit. More precisely, lvlfactor is
    lvlfactor = 2 * (your lvl)/(your lvl + defenders lvl). If your barb is level 92, it goes: 2*92/(92+**) = 1.0222...

Anyway, to hit first desirable breakpoint with your level 92 barb, aka having 93% cth against archers, formula would go as:

    AR needed = 0.93*1300/(lvlfactor - 0.93)
    AR needed = 13110

For a level 96 barb that number is 10655 AR in comparison. Level factors significant difference.
Also, always put slightly more just in case game rounds up numbers in strange way etc.

Getting 13k AR is not a joke, but you could use ar/life charms of some kind and lower MF a bit if needed. Easiest way is really to level up barb before you turn him to zerker. Really, level matters much. Getting to 95 should not a be problem by Baal running, and that will rise your chance to hit significantly. Level 95 barb needs 11169 AR, 2k AR less to hit same hitting chance against monsters. 92-95 you need ~230 Baal runs. Not too much if you ask me. Gogogo.

Also it seems at level 92 you actually need more AR to have 95% cth against devilkins than to have 93% against archers, so "breakpoints" seem to be different at lower levels than on higher. On level 95 you need 10884 AR to have 95% cth against devilkins, certainly less than to have 93% vs archers.

Thanks for taking the time to crunch those numbers. I do math so infrequently nowadays, so anything with more than one pair of brackets gives me headaches :)

Yeah, I kinda came to the leveling conclusion myself, also. I was just living in some denial, since leveling barbs ain't that easy and I was secretly hoping here would be some magical silver bullet solution to leveling berserker I wasn't aware of, but I guess it's a respec to WW and off to slay Baal. Good thing is I'm already 2/3 towards 93. >230 runs really isn't that much, after all. Nice alternative for 1.07 rack running, actually. I haven't really played with whrilwind since I got my Travincal Blizzard Sorc up and running, so I may have to adjust a little to the playstyle.

I trust this build of yours is still up to date? It seems I don't own fcr/dual leech ring, so I guess fcr/mana leech will do for now, since SoE has life steal. Maybe a bit more points to vitality. This calls for gambling/crafting spree. Of course, if I somehow manage to manage to craft that fcr/dual leech ring, it will probably end up having lvl req of 96 or something

Good thing is, my zerker hasn't really performed terribly so far, so at least he cannot get any worse. Bad thing is, I'll most likely have to reroll my map to get good WSK :(.

Well, you win some, you lose some. Thanks for help again!

I have to admit that I cannot play that quickly. I would be pretty much exhausted after 5 minutes :)

I think that you could perhaps give up a bit MF. More than 300-400% doesn't add much for uniques. The first which comes to my mind are the Nagelrings which could be replaced by a Ravenfrost (AR, dex, different socketing for the shako, like Um or Ber) and a sexy rare. That might lead to more killing speed and a better "awesome finds per hour" ratio.

Independently from that, is a Cham'ed shako plus two Nagels really better than a PT/Ist one with Ravenfrost and just one Nagel? It's 5 or 6 less MF, but way more dex and AR bonuses. Or was the build made to celebrate the find of a Cham rune? :D

Ravenfrost is a big no no when using Item Find. Frost damage shatters corpses, so you cannot hork :)

    @Burgomaster3

For leveling on Baal, you could level up by running waves. It is actually faster up to level 96 (well, depends on your killing speed, but should be like that for most players), and by ignoring Baal you could use Arreat instead (additional safety and leech). But, you lose on those essences which is pretty much what Baal is about (apart of xp on higher levels). Also, by ignoring Baal AR becomes pretty irrelevant (Grief has ignore target defense!). You could run with like 4k AR and be perfectly efficient as someone who has say 10k AR since only the boss from wave is immune to effect of ignore target defense.

It is possible even to run only first 4 waves and completely ignore Lister who is arguably only one dangerous in whole running sequence and mana burn is annoying to face. Xp-ing is very comparable to hitting all 5 waves, but is also boring cuz there is nothing that can possibly kill you apart from p1 dolls in throne room.

As for rings, I used Ravenfrost by running Baal, but you can do without. I'm simply used to have cbf on my barb and like to ww more like that, but more efficient is to not use Ravenfrost and use rare ring instead. So, you could pump leech on ring slot more.

    @krischan
It is very hard to do possibly faster running than this because problem is save/exit time which can be ugly if you finish your run very fast. There is not much there can be done to increase killing speed apart from using LoH, but even that doesn't give improvement, only marginal. So, when you max character like that, you could put everything else into MF.

By using Ravenfrost and having 20% chance to shatter corpses, it reduces effectiveness of a barb. I lose ~7.6% effectiveness of a build cuz of that, and that is comparable to reducing my MF from 776 to like 570 or something like that, or that nasty effect from Ravenfrost is similar to losing 200MF on a build, while gain is it increases my chance to hit from 92-93 to 94%.

Dunno what about "celebration" of finding Cham rune, but I have few Cham shakos and 8 more unused Chams in stash. Maybe I'll celebrate if I find 10th unused one ^^

Giving up MF for something else: Yes, you cannot improve on killing speed anymore if you can one-hit kill almost every /p1 pit boss, but you could improve your protection, so you gain XP faster than you lose it from dying. Maxing lightning res and using T-God's comes to my mind, although I'm not sure what its ctc FoH will do while zerking.

Ravenfrost: Oh yes, I forgot the cold damage. That's not good for horking, of course, but it still leaves the question why not using rare rings instead.

    Nice writeup Gripp.
I got curious about those mf breakpoints, and eventually after a bit of googling (no ATMA) I found the complete list, I'll leave it here for everyone to enjoy.

That is something I would definitely suggest to players who mostly have plain MF charms and are missing on certain things by that. Or if someone has non-fcr 2 barb high MF amulet, he can consider using fcr MF ring if that beats Nagel-fcr amulet alternative. Rare ring can certainly defeat Nagel if it is really good (preferably from earlier versions), but that is quite rare sight to see (I have none). After all, Nagel offers 2 most important stats to zerker.

Also by using T-God's, have in mind you need total of 42 IAS for max zerking speed, so in that case either Highlord's or IAS gloves should be used. But that would be overkill. Most dangerous situations by far are when you are cursed and you face fanaticism archers or might archers. Out of 5 deaths like 4 were cuz of that.

    EDIT:
When I was poorer, I didn't use rare rings instead of Nagels, but life/mana charms instead of MF charms since I figured I want both life and mana on my zerker more than some extra MF, and in that time didn't care about lite res, so improvement by charms was higher than replacing Nagel with rare ring I had then. I mean, possibilities are several, it just depends on what player needs and what is the most profitable way to get that in expense of some MF.

@Gripphon Sorry to get back to this, but since my own Berserker has just reached Hell Pits ... What Merc did you use? It's probably in there somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks :). His gear was in there, but didn't see the aura.

Wouldn't BA be a good choice, since it helps out with CTH and might doesn't do anything for your own damage? That way you can put more str or vita on your barb.

Problem with BA is you need 125 IAS for 9 frame zerk or 75 IAS for 10 frame zerk. Going over 10 is definitely not an option if you wanna beat 9 fpa zerk from Phaseblade. Other problem is, unless you ATMA-bug your BA Grief, you are gonna need to repair it...

Overall, no, sacrifice MF for extra IAS to have slightly more damage, but slower attacking is not worth it.
