Grief Runeword (ITD) and Attack Rating?

I was experimenting with the Grief PB I just made, and wondered how much attack rating factors in when I have Ignore Target’s Defense on the weapon.

I know that ITD doesn’t work against bosses, but I decided to experiment some: I just used a normal attack on a level 73 sorc in Act 1 Hell with just about as little AR gear as possible, giving me an abysmal ~1000 AR—given the character, the AR, etc., I figured this would be virtually the worst set up possible.

I supposed I wouldn’t be able to hit anything, but as far as I can tell, I didn’t miss a single time on the Blood Moor.

Does this seem right/possible?

If this is correct, perhaps AR wouldn’t be much of an issue with Grief except when going up against uniques or bosses?

Ignore target defense means that your non-boss non-unique non-champion non-player opponents will have 0 defense against you. This means only level of attacker and defender are included into calculation for chance to hit. If your level is equal of higher than creep's you attack, then you will always have 95% chance to hit, even with 1 attack rating.

Grief also has -25% target defense, which works as -12.5% against bosses/uniques, so bosses/uniques will have 0.875% their total defense against your attacks.

How much attack rating is enough mostly depends on your targets. Generally it's not much profitable to go over 4k AR. I assume bosses are your primary targets one way or another, so ignore target defense will only clear minions faster, while for boss himself you would want to have some reasonably high (4k at least) attack rating. I mean, 3k also works, but difference between 3k and 4k is usually considerable, while between 4k and higher values difference is much smaller.

Thanks, that's very helpful. It's what I was thinking looking at the to hit calculations, but my math skills are such that I wasn't 100% sure that the conclusions were correct.
