Grief runeword and superior vs unsuperior weapon

Hi all-

A quick question on a smiter. I am building a 1pt smiter/zeal paladin. My ideal weapon is a grief runeword in a 5os zerker axe or phase blade. A quick recap on greif:

35% Chance To Cast Level 15 Venom On Striking

+30-40% Increased Attack Speed (varies)
Damage +340-400 (varies)
Ignore Target's Defense
-25% Target Defense
+(1.875 per character level) 1.875-185.625%
Damage To Demons (Based on Character Level)
Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
-20-25% To Enemy Poison Resistance (varies)
20% Deadly Strike
Prevent Monster Heal
+2 To Mana After Each Kill
+10-15 Life After Each Kill (varies)

Now my question is how the 15% ed of a superior weapon affects the dmg of the runeword. Will it multiply against the base damage of ~35 making a 5dmg difference? or does it multiple off the dmg after the 340-400 is added making it more of a 50-60dmg difference?

Obviously this is important because the difference between the items is 5os phase blade is worth a few pgems and i see 15%ed phase blades going for well over a vex.

The 15%ed will only be applied to the base damage, it won't boost the 340-400 damage bonus. IMO it's not worth it, but if you already have one, then use it. For PvM, I would use a phase blade BTW because it's faster (and BAs need lots of repair), but for PvP, range is important, so a BA would be the better choice in that case.

The way I look at it, especially with phase blades is if I'm sticking a high rune in it it better be the nicest weapon base I can find.

Time is a factor as well, not just that HR. If you already have a HR, but no perfect base weapon, how much time are you willing to spend to get one? And how much are you willing to spend on speeding it up?

the 15% ED wont make that much difference, especially to a PB. The crushing blow does the majority of damage, followed by that +300-400 damage, which is added to the smite.

In a weapon it's not really worth it unless you're a perfectionist. The damage boost will be VERY minimal, and (if you're buying it) the price will be double or more what a normal 5os weapon of that type would cost. Not to mention it makes the repair costs higher, unless of course it's a phase blade.

I've never really found money to be a big issue in this game. However, making Grief in a phase blade has high dex req. over the axe. I have often made it in an Ettin axe and been very satisfied.

It seems to me the 'zerker is sometimes "overvalued" for my budget when the ettin will do the job...my two cents

You need that much for max blocking anyway, so it's not an issue, except for frenzy barbs, but I for myself (as a PvMer) prefer BotD+Death for them anyway.

It;s just my preferance. I like to be the one turning around and selling it for twice the price because of a silly detail like a perf base XD

the issue with ettins are hitting the FPAs with your fanat and other +IAS. The IAS carried into smite, ofc. As Krischan already said, dex u'll need for max block anyway
