Yet you are correct that charms dropped in the pit aren't good.
Baal charms don't have to be dropped by baal. Charms coming from hell diablo or hell nihalktat - quest 4 act 5 boss - are just as good while they have a lower ilvl.

Well, Baal charms obviously have to be dropped by Baal, just like a blueberry muffin must contain at least one blueberry, even if you like raspberries more, but in this context it means a charm which can have any affix. The highest affix for GCs has an affix level of 91 and alvl = ilvl for them, so only hell Diablo, Nihlathak and Baal can drop them. For SCs, the calculation of the affix level is a bit more complicated (because their base quality level is higher than 1), but the result is that just Nihlathak and Baal can drop them while Diablo cannot produce one or two of the highest elemental affixes.

I'm more or less with you, lionheart. The way I've always seen it, "Baal charm" is slang for a grand charm from hell Baal, Diablo, or Nihlathak. Maybe that's not completely universal terminology, but like krischan points out, in practice it doesn't really matter.
I'm going to semi-jack this thread though, since the main question has been pretty much answered -- for small charms, are hell Baal and hell Nihlathak charms equivalent? For some reason I had it in my head that there were some small charm affixes that only hell Baal small charms could get and no others. This, I may just have wrong, though.

If I may ask a question in here, instead of making a new thread...
I have 2 GC's that dropped from Hell Nihl. I know it was him because he was the only one still standing and the charm dropped at the same time as the big piles of gold. These charms weren't particularly great, having only a clvl of 6 and I think 11, and stats that weren't really all that great. These charms have the possibility of rerolling into a skiller with 41+life? Small chance, but thats what that means right?
