Got a Job... and it sucks

Well, i got a job! (a summer one, finally)
WOOO!

But its at Harkins Theatres (Movie Theater)
and uh, i didnt think it would be so bad, but really, its horrible.

I hate it.

I just started- i did training for 4 days, and then im gonna do 1 week (till Thurs) and after that im going to put in my 2 week notice.

So yeah, I'll have to look for another job - a higher paying, less crappy job.

What kind of stuff are you doing at the theatre? I worked at one for 4.5 years and I can tell you, the key is making it to projectionist.

Best Job EVER.

You mean they still have people do that stuff? *shrug*

Free movies for you right?

They have a projectionist, and he's been there along time.

free movies, yeah, sorta. I can call in and see one, and i get free tickets in my paycheck... that is of course, after i get my first raise, which is of course, after 360 hours. Then i get 2 per paycheck.

i do all sorts of things:
usher, concession, and door.

but mostly i dont like the atmosphere... the whole crazyness of it all, and the insanity. We have to "upsell" and "suggestive sell" - then there are these "Checkers" that come in and check up on how the theater is doing, but you dont know if its a checker or not.

and if you dont do your "6 steps" 3 times (if a checker gets you 3 times) then you get fired.

I mean, its ridiculous....

there is much more stuff too, but yeah, i dont like it at all.

It must be different for certain theatres, because my friend said it wasn't too bad, just kinda boring when the movies are playing and you got nothing to do.

Certainly sounds better than working as a dough guy at Pizza Hut which is what I'm doing right now. Gotta come in early every morning, make the dough for the pan pizzas, then clean up, cut the pizzas, take orders, make the pizzas etc.

Good luck on a new job.

And really, you probably don't have to put in two weeks notice. I know that is professional and all but still. If it's just a summer job, then they are expecting you to be gone soon. It's not like you are filling a key position.

My job with my friends dad fell through and no one around here would hire me. I asked my school if I could borrow their DVD converter for the summer and have been converting DVDs for 25$ a piece.. really good money considering each tape takes me an hour to do.. 25$ an hour is not bad :) and it's the easiest thing ever to do

Get a job at a Golf Course/Country Club. Thats where i work, and i can tell you, after four years of summer jobs through high school, this summer is the easiest. i get to ride around in a golf cart all day.

But that is what your employer will say. They are protecting themselves after all.

Do what feels right to you of course. Summer is not that long as you know.

Yeah i know, but im gonna keep it up for the 3 weeks (1 week, then 2 weeks notice)

all the while looking for another job of course.

I will also need money for gas, as i am getting a car in early August.
(another reason why im staying a bit longer)

In anycase, im gonna try to see two or three movies for free before i leave.

Finding a new job becomes much easier if you have established a good relationship with your previous employer so you have professional references.

Yes and no. It all depends on many things.

Plus, a summer job at a theatre is not a professional reference. Sorry.

In any event, he is already planning on leaving. That is not exactly deserving of props. Three weeks is not an "established relationship".

Good luck on finding a new summer job. I held a summer job after high school graduation working at Taco Hell. I will never go back to that store ever again because of the things I was put through. Last summer, I worked for student housing department for my college, I basically just moved furniture in and out of the dorms. I quickly made friends with my coworkers at that job,

Fast food generally sucks, and from what I hear from my friends so does working at the movie theatre. However I do know of one guy who really loves it for some reason.

I can't really suggest any "good" summer jobs, as truth is there are few if any. It helps if you have connections, the only reason I have the jobs I do now is because I know people who know people.

Yeah I'm doing manual labor (landscaping, mowing lawns and all that good stuff). It's good money, but it wears you out. Plus we get through at like 12 or 1, so I can still party at night.

I would definitely leave a 2 weeks notice. You need for the theater to have at least one good thing to say about you as a reference. And I wouldn't put my notice in until I had another job lined up for sure. You can always tell the new job that you're employed somewhere and need to complete your last two weeks, they won't complain, it shows you're a half-loyal employee.
