    Goodbye Grandma

My grandmother passed away today. :sad2:
    She was 84.

I grew up in an extended family, so I was constantly surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. My grandmother wasn't some lady I would visit only on special occasions. She was with me every day when I was a kid and took care of me when my parents were working. She was essentially a second mother who helped raise me and my older brother.

She suffered from severe dementia during the past decade or so. The last time I flew back to Saigon to visit her, she couldn't even recognize me as her grandson. She didn't even recognize the house that she painstakingly built and lived in for 60 years, nor could she remember that the two women taking care of her every day are her own two daughters. When I saw her last year, she was a wreck, bedridden and completely dependent on my aunts for everything. However, that didn't erase my memory of her as a strong woman, the woman that walked me to kindergarten every day, the woman that always rushed to my side whenever I fell off my little tricycle, and the woman that always put her family's needs above her own.

In a way, I kind of glad she's finally passed. Dementia is certainly not a pleasant thing to go through, and while I am very sad she's gone, I'm also glad that she does not have to suffer through it anymore. We were fortunate enough that our family in Saigon has enough money and resources to hire a caretaker to help care for her, so at least she got to get through her illness with some dignity.

Here's to you grandma. Thanks for all the hard work and sacrifices you made for this family. You've held this family together through wars and famines, and through thick and thin. I hope you passed peacefully and without pain.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, especially as you say she was such a good person and meant a great deal to you. I can very much relate.

Sorry for your loss. That really sucks. But once the pain diminishes you will still have your memories. And trust me, those memories will pop in your head at seemingly random times, and you will just smile thinking about her. Its still a sad feeling, but a good sad, hard to explain until you experience it yourself.

    This is very true.

And my condolences as well. If you're up to it, you might think about writing down your memories of her, so you can pass those on to your family when you get older.

Oh EA, I do offer you my sympathies.

I understand the feelings of loss fighting with the .... near relief .... that the suffering is over.

Nothing I can say can change how you feel today, so I'll leave it at .. give it time.

I know exactly what you went through, as I am going through it with my grandfather, who is also in his 80's. First time he went to the nursing home, took me three years to see him and the first time I went back (he's over two hours away from me), I took one look and wanted to leave because he wasn't the same man I knew. It's hard for me to visit since he's so far away, college and work or a combination of the three that depresses me every time my family gets to see him and I can't.

Thoughts are with you, I can't imagine what it would be like to lose my grandmother, she's close to me, albeit nowhere near as close as yours was to you.

How do you fall off a tricycle?

My dad is flying back to attend her funeral. Unfortunately, I can't do the same due to exams coming up. :sad2:

My grandmother babysat my sister and i for a long time. Then we would visit her every weekend. Then she got lung cancer. The last words she said to my sister and i were "good bye". I haven't cried since then. Nothing else has hurt me as much as losing your "mother".

Sorry to hear about that, Evrae. Just 13 days ago my best friend's mom died from cancer. She was like a second mom to me, so I can sort of relate.
