Goodbye Dad

Goodbye Dad

Dad was a man of few words, as my Mother had said, on more then one occasion.
However, It took me awhile to realize that this was one of his great strengths.
Of course, he loved to retell of days gone by, about his youth, the navy and tales of his own father.

He always just wanted to live in the home he worked so hard for, and enjoy the kind of peace
that could only be found there. Away from a world that could be at time hostile and cruel.
And in that, he was successful.

Dad was a loving father and husband, rarely angered, and the most patient person I have ever
come to know. He was always a good friend when I needed one, and supported me during
difficult times in my life. He was always happy to celebrate the small wins, and encouraging
even when my own personal passions and pursuits were not always fruitful.

Dad enjoyed simple pleasures, and was never driven by materialistic desires. He loved a good
movie and recorded countless titles that he loved to share and watch with others when he could.
I remember he used to call action movies, (which were a favorite) "shoot em ups" ,
which I always found amusing. It was nice to see as time progressed, he mostly took
pleasure in films about people and stories of the human spirit, and wasn't afraid to shed the
occasional tear if they were called upon.

In a similar way I'll always remember the life of a man who lived and loved with unwavering
christian strengths and kindness. But most of all, I will miss my friend.

Re: Goodbye Dad

Thank you, I appreciate the post. He had dementia caused by decreasing oxygen in his brain, and a steady decline in the quality of life after my mothers passing in 2001.
Over the past year, his mobility declined until he finally became bed ridden last week,
due to physical pain throughout his frail body. It was only a matter of days after which
our family had Hospice intervene to administer oxygen and relief from his pain. He
struggled for breath though an entire evening and passed away the next morning, in the comfort of his own home with his family by his side.

I'm sorry for your loss. It makes me really think about a lot of things, especially since I have 3 grandparents who are all quickly declining in health. They aren't exactly as close to me as you were to your father, but the feelings are there just the same.

Sometimes we really don't think about our loved ones as often as we should. As sad as I am for you, your post is a great reminder for us to think about those who are still here and remember those who have already passed and all their good virtues and qualities.

Re: Goodbye Dad

My condolences as well.

I realize that as a father, I don't spend anywhere near as much time with my boy as I'd like to, and I find that he's often more interested in TV or Pokemon than in spending time just sitting with Dad.

Time goes by too quickly.

I am sorry for your loss. I was moved to post because I have often thought about this. My parents are both still alive, thank God and are both 74 this year. I know it happens to all of us and it is one of the things we all have in common...death. There is no way to avoid it but yet it is one of the hardest things we'll have to endure.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I hope you can enjoy the company of the rest of your family during this time and cherish the time you'll get with them.

Thanks again all. Yes It's definitely a reminder that life is temporary. It's good to check yourself from time to time, to make sure decisions you make along the way are more for the greater good, and less self serving.
Even a little sacrifice can go a long way to improve the quality of another persons life.
That's actually what love is all about.

I'm sorry for your loss. Sounds like he was a good dad, which i don't have.

Re: Goodbye Dad

Sorry to hear it. Both my parents are going to be 80 this year, and Dad's been declining due to bad arthritis and other stuff. I can't imagine the world without him. Circle of life and all that doesn't make it any easier.

I'm sorry if this is inapropiate as I'm not very good at this kind of stuff, so I'll try to keep my writing at a minimum.

I'm very sorry for your loss, it's always tragic and I guess no matter what, nothing I write will make it better.

I couldn't agree more, you're completely right in my honest opinion.

An interesting post, I am sorry for your loss. Your post made me think about my dad, which ironically only shares a few things in common with yours. Thinking about all the times ive gotten upset at my dads flaws or refused to spend time with him. I wish I could fix that. You don't get much time in this world, and it goes by quick. Again sorry for your loss :(
