Getting back to the game

I haven't played D2 in about 5 years, and thought I'd give it a try again with the ladder reset. But there's one thing I have learned when playing this game, you better spec your character right. I'm thinking of making a good all-around Barb for PvE mostly, and there are just too many specialized builds out there for me to understand which one fits my game style best. Berserker sounds fun, but is he as good all-around as a WW or Frenzy barb? I would also need Str/Dex suggestions, as most builds say 'enough for gear', and I have no idea what gear I'll be getting. Thanks!

I would recommend pumping a lot of points into strength/vitality until level 25 or so (I keep them about even, perhaps 20 more into vit), only adding dex along the way if you need it for an item. After that you should be putting a a lot more points into dex if you want to use a shield, but otherwise you are going to want mostly str/vit because of armor requirements and hp (survivability). You will realize later if you put too many or too few points into dex, but imo strength is a perfectly acceptable attribute for a barb to stack and get a few extra of, because damage will likely be your weakest point!

Attributes are fairly forgiving, and chances are if you put a lot of points into dex and discover you are going to become an IK barb that doesn't need any, you can still do just fine and tank away no problem. If you are going to really plan out your build, I would start by focusing on your skill choices, and let attributes fall as they may.

If you ever are unsure, just pour more points into vitality, because that is almost never a bad idea!
