General Feedback on SP

I played single player exclusively for a long time, and recently starting playing on BNet. I am now at the point where I am prepared to abandon BNet and go back to SP. In my brief online experience I have gotten some important insights into the game and human nature and generally my appreciation for the game has increased . . .

I was wondering if people could just let me know why, when you clearly have internet access, you choose to play SP. I'd like to know what advantages or disadvantages you perceive.

Also, it seems that for those times when a multiplayer game is in order, most people on the forum prefer a hosted game to one on open Bnet. I was wondering why that was. It seems a password protected game would probably be comperable and perhaps have certain advantages.

In any event, I hope to host some MP games shortly, and since I am starting entirely from scratch on SP, I'll be hitting people up for loaners, trades and freebies - I'm not that much of a purist!

For me it started back when B.net first got started with the original D2. It wasn't the most stable thing in the world. After about my 3rd "lag death" I had had enough, switched to SP and never looked back.

there are many reasons people play SP.
MF is easier and faster with the same map on reload and /players X which benefits MF and lvling.
if you dont want to have duped items, you knwo you dont have to.
no PK'ers
no annoying n00bs and chat bots
no lag
can play whenever even if interent is unavailable or bnet servers are down.
and many more

i dont knwo why peopel dont offer open-net games instead of IP, but im sure there is a reaosn. i just play with however is hosting. if peopel offer to play oepn bnet, ill play there.

I played B.Net once, for about 2 hours. Frankly, I didn't like the way everyone was rushing around desperate to reach Andariel to kill her as quickly as possible--I mean, even in a 4 player game we were level 12 when we reached her! My style of play is slow and steady, and I won't be rushed around for anything, so I never played BNet again after that.

Reason #1 for me is that I have a crappy Internet connection from home.

Reason #2, is human nature. Probably 90% of the people you play with on BNet would be fine, but that 10% would ruin it for me. And I would constantly be worrying if the people I played with were the 10%.

Along with a variety of other reasons.

I had similar experiences as factotum. The one time I did play bnet I found myself unvoluntarily rushed. A lvl eighty-something char started to pull me through Act I normal, being rude to me for being so slow in following him. At the point I quit the game and continued in SP. For me MP is not necessary to enjoy the game, I much prefer to set my own pace.

BTW: hermit_boy, awesome avatar! :D

B.net is always such a hassle. I usually just end up spending much more time searching for a good game to join than actualy playing the game. Not being able to choose your own pace is a big irritation. Only way to do that would be to play solo, but then you might as well be playing SP. Everyone is always in such a hurry there.

i like doing full clears and checking out everything that drops (since i was untwinked) so my 1 B.net experience was less than satisfying.

I had played D1 solo so the idea of playing D2 online wasn't really even something that came up. To me, it always was a single player game (although that meant I avoided paladins for a long time).

I only started MPing after finding this place and meeting people before joining games with them so I know they aren't a-holes who are gonna act like 12 year olds and insult me because a)I'm only a moderately good player at best b)I'm a girl or c)I'm married to another woman. so far, everyone here has been totally cool to me, unlike even 5 minutes of Bnet.

I started on SP when a friend of mine bought the game. I like being able to mule my items without having to check my accounts every 60 days or whatever. Atma makes that so much sweeter. Plus, I can put the game down for a year and not loose any ground with my MF or character builds. That alone is worth playing SP.

Personally I've been more fond of Single Player because it's easier for someone inherently anti-sociable like me who has a phobia of chat/instant message things (including the conversations in games) to play solo than find a group of decent people to play with on Bnet.

the biggest reasons why i left bnet for sp was

1 - i had all items i could ever wish for, MFing was just not worth it anymore. And i had chars that could easily beat any enemye in the game. And i never liked PvP that much....

2 - didn´t like the bnet people. I know there´s good people aswell but they often stay quiet while those little kiddies ruin my bnet experiences.

the thing i miss the most is not having MP games available all the time. It´s hard to find Games that are playing the same quest that i am.

There are benefits to both. I recently started playing Diablo 2 again after a 1 year absence and 1.5 years away from bnet. I decided to take the bnet route simple to try it out.

SP Pros

Every unique that drops is yours
Basically, everything that drops is yours
No PK's
As mentioned, no beating Andariel at level 12(I did that last night, but there were only two of us playing)

SP Cons

No teammates to partner up with.
Noone to compliment your skills for boss fights
Noone to trade with

Bnet Pros

There's a good number of people to quest with
Trading is optional
Teamming up can be a blast with the right people
Ladder Rankings

Bnet Cons

Lag
Bots
Assholes
PK's
Can't do quests the host has completed

So there you go. I like them both for their own reasons. The character I'm using right now is on battlenet until I kill Baal. Then I can play hardcore again. Then all my softcore characters will be done in single player so I can keep all the items I find and the hardcore ones will be on bnet for the ladder. If I die one time in hardcore from lagging out, I'm back to SP all the way.

There are many reasons why i play SP (most of them have been already mentioned) and i don't have original d2 cd . But i tried playing on FSGS server , and thing that annoyed me most , was fights for drops :

- Arghhh ! You lame !!! That's mine !!! {Many rude words}.

And that's from guy who was sitting in town and begging for items

Very fun :cheesy:

Edit :

@Discreaderror : There are sc and hc ladders here in SPF, and many people actively playing MP. And if you write story about you beating SCARY enemy , you'll be surprised how many people will say : congratz man , or something like that . Well , about trade... Just look at trade thread

Yes, as Online stated, MP games and trading are an option here too. Those two things aren't as active here as they are on Bnet but the quality of our MP games may surprise you

Forum != IM. At least I can edit/delete posts (well, not delete here, but I can remove their content by editing) or not make them at all on the forums (I'd estimate that I've typed or partially-typed about 500-800 replies and not posted them, for various reasons...)

Like other have said I play SP (I mostly post on the necro forum) because I like to clear whole acts, I consider a successful build to be one that I can take anywhere and defeat my enemies not how hast I can kill any one type of enemy. I also am working on a grail (no trade, all from 1 character Clvl 87 right now)...but that is coming along rather slowly because I detest magic finding in the since of running an area repeatedly.

Also I play single player because I am not much of a team player...I haven't decided if that is pride or just simple arrogance.

For me, Bnet was just too chaotic. Rushers everywhere, boring cow or bloody runs, the threat of PK when you just want to enjoy yourself, the crazy and unbalanced economy, etc.
If I had to point fingers I would cite 3 main problems for me:

Lag. My CPU is running on bare bones memory (64) and I'm still using dial up. The lag I get from my memory swapping alone is something I've learned to deal with and it's not that bad. On Bnet that kind of slowdown is just as fatal as pure internet lag. I have played Bnet on other CPUs with much higher specs than reccommmended and the 'swing at it when it's not actually there' syndrome still happened. That is just pure frustration.

Duping and the economy. While my purism doesn't prevent me from twinking my chars, I firmly believe in legit equipment. I could very easily outfit myself with duped Gazes and the like for next to nothing but it really sapped the enjoyment of the game out of me. In no way did I feel I earned my prowess. Being proud of my characters is one of the reasons I still play.
Because I refused to use or even hold onto dupes for trading, my trade pool of items was frightfully lacking compared to the usual Bnetter. As well, due to the lag, doing boss runs was not an option and ninja-looting was outside my capabilities, so I could never even establish a trading base.
This is also why I am such a diehard grailer now. :D

PK. The type of Bnet PKer that enjoys PvP builds and legit duels I can appreciate. It is the rude, spiteful and harrassing WP PKer and their ilk that annoyed me. While I'm playing I don't want to always be on the alert for declarations of hostility. Plain and simple. It can be distracting and I always felt like a potential sheep among ruthless wolves on Bnet.

Rushing never bothered me on Bnet nor does it bother me SP. Normal difficulty is completely worthless to me, even with new builds. I twink and then I rush myself as best I can until mid-NM. Can you blame them for rushing? Normal is no challenge at all, even for the most inept player. Nightmare is more enjoyable for it's diversity but is again almost no challenge for a decently equipped and skilled char. Hell is always where it's been at. The challenge is real, the drops are exciting, your build can finally show it's worth, and joining other characters becomes more truly co-operative.

I will never go back to Bnet.

I play SP mainly for 1 big reason.

I AM IN CONTROL!

If I want to take a break, I can.

If I want to eat, I can.

If you play on b.net and go afk for more than 5 minutes, the rest of your party is 2 acts ahead.

If I want to leave a game overnight, my SP game sits and waits until I decide I want to play again. And it's right where I left it.

And thanks to the Doc :worship: I don't have to play mule characters every so often so I don't lose my stuff.

1. Play whenever I want. No servers to deal with.
2. Fair and accountable trades. There is no feeling like you got ripped off.
3. the SPF. If you haven't noticed, the other character-specific forums rarely have more than 25 users on them, and thus threads stay on the front page when their last post in them was days ago.
4. Better english in the SPF. I know we have a lot of foreign posters, but people here tend to write in complete sentences and not use Bnet speak. Personally, I hate seeing huge run-on sentences in threads. It just deters me me for helping that poster.
5. No Lag
6. No Lag-->HC Safety
7. No PK's
8. /playersX, 'nuff said
9. All the drops are mine
10. Same MF Maps
11. Satisfaction for Pat/Mats
12. No rushing
13. No one asking to be rushed or for "TP PLZ TP PLZ"
14. Kind, respectable MP games with people of your like levels.
15. ATMA: I :worship: Doc
16. Playing SP makes you a more skille dplayer and character builder because you can't rely on others to help you past areas with dual immunes and other difficult places. Stategy and patience becomes key, and you learn to deal with what you are facing.
17. SPF Tournaments
18. Have I mentioned the SPF enough yet?
19. No spam bots
20. No forum trade inflation
21. We get all the ladder-only recipies/items, without worrying about a ladder re-set.
22. Complete knowledge of the game by doing every quest.
23. Individual goals (grail, sept, char grail, etc...)
24. No one will laugh at you for an unusual build
25. The satisfaction that you are playing 100% legit.
26. No name restrictions on your characters i.e. "There is already a character named XXX on this realm".
27. Characters don't expire.

Have I named enough yet?
