Gem stacking in Inventory and combining in the field?

Based on the JW interview, it sounds like there will be a lot of gems in D3. Does anyone know if identical gems will stack in Inventory? It was a pain in D2 to have so many identical gems take up their own space until they could be combined into a better gem...2 chipped rubies, 2 chipped diamonds, 2 chipped skulls, etc. Also, will players be able to combine the lower quality gems in the field to create the next tier gem, or will I have to travel back to town/camp?

I really hope they introduce item stacking in this game.

They've borrowed enough from WoW that that shouldn't be a huge deal. I know that it adds some complexity in an online game, but its worth it when we have a stash the size of a shoebox.

Not sure if this has been answered yet or not but it is a good question. Not sure if we can combine in the field but the stacking would be nice. Actually if we can stack the gems there is really no need to have the ability to combine in the field as doing so at best saves 0 inventory room and at worse causes you to lose another spot. Stacking is good for these kinds of games and I hope they use more of it in D3, the tetris game of D2 is no fun at all

If I understood well, it is the jeweler that combines the gems together. So I would say that you have to go back to town to combine those.

From what I've seen in the artisan video and the screenshots in the press kit, I think it's very likely that gems and all other kinds of items that are not "equipment" (armor, weapons) are stackable.

Looking at that artisan video, it does appear that they have stacking scraps (the items that the equipment gets salvaged into)?

Scraps, essences etc. clearly stack. I would think they would let gems stack too, since there seems to be a big emphasis on letting us spend more time in the field before having to go back to town.

I wonder if they might even introduce Sims-style item stacking. In the Sims, you can stack unlike items of the same type -- for instance, normal, good, and great tomatoes. You can click a corner of the inventory box to expand the stack and select tomatoes individually. In the context of Diablo, this would mean stacking different qualities of the same gem or essence.

Yes I play the Sims. Wanna make something of it? ;)

Apparently, every 1-slot item will be able to be stacked, with the exception of runes.

Combining gems in the field would defeat the purpose of the Jeweler.
