GamesCom Info Revealed - Introducing Artisans

Noon came in Cologne, and the feature is: Artisians! New crafting NPCs.

    • Artisans are NPCs that follow the player.
    • You can queue up multiple items to be crafted by your Artisan, then go play through the world. Your items will be done when you return.
    • 5 levels can drop but artisans can cube until level 16
    • Artisans will have their own quests.
    • Blacksmith repairs, adds sockets (so you’ll need this), and crafts armor. Jewelers cubes jewels, combining gems together to make them better - with “jewelwords†being mentioned. Mystic’s craft magic items.

Official Presentation Video narrated by Jay Wilson

Do you need to protect arisans?
Will they give you the quests to go on together or will they simply vanish upon leaving town?
I understand runes, I understand runewords, yet jewelwords I do not get yet, info?
The crafting system is unknown to me but I guess its for everyone at this point...

In other words, let the vid/pics links commence!

Note: the demo they used at gamescon was the 2009 demo right? which would mean that all of this was already actually in the game a year ago so they must have made more progress at this time.

I'm downloading the Presskit now so i can check out the screenies & video for myself.

    Thoughts?

Does the phrase "pimp my shop" come to mind to anyone else? :p

The video is really nice. It is so much better when it is presented by Jay Wilson :alright: Rather than just some random gameplay sequences without any voice explaining what's going on.

So... somehow disappointed by what is announced. Some kind of crafting is not really what I hoped for as a new revealed mechanism. Still it is very nice to have a new video, to see a bit of the town of new Tristram, how it feels, to see the actual (or not to old) interface...

Now, the sad point is: after one year of drought, we had a fix. And five minutes after this fix... I want another one. And the next fix is only in two months. Addicted ? :whistling:

Although the vid makes things quite clear especially since it is even readable. I got 1 question (so far).

On the shield properties it states:
    Block amount 6/10

Does this mean 6 out of 10 attacks or 6 out of 10 hits. If it is the latter then there is a miss percentile or is every attack automagically a hit. If so, than it is all about the amount of damage per second, isn't it?

    You're hooked man, HOOKED!
    :)

OT: I myself really love a good crafting system since it adds to durability of the game. In D2 they're still searching for runes...

It could equally mean "blocks six tenths of the damage"

does anyone else think they showed the (in the last 10 seconds of the presentation video) last monk vs monster footage to show that they darkened the art style just a wee bit? I am not one who cares one way or the other, but just thought that they were trying to show something because it was very unnecessary.

There aren't any technical or artistic changes graphics wise. They are the same.

But monster death animations REALLY bothered me. They are not satisfying or good and they don't drop any blood on the ground. I don't even talk about dismemberment.

For example do you remember Hidden death animation in D1? After 14 years it's reasonable to want something like that but instead it looks monster death animations are really worse than D1 and D2.

Physics may have an effect on them but one way or another the result is important. I hope they will work on death animations for each monster.

Here's a link to 52nd second of a D1 video where you can see the hidden death animation.

Sounds pretty cool, and a good way to do multiple things at once: craft, enchant, break down garbage in your bags, and provide a little friendly continuity like Deckard did in D2. One thing I saw that bugged me was the "identify" part of the mystic. Really? We're STILL trying to use the goddamn identify mechanic in a fast paced game? So silly.

Yep, salvaging seems pretty cool. I'm a bit concerned about selling or salvaging trashloot, which one would be more profitable at the end? Will you get more gold from just selling the actual item to npc or will you get more gold by gambling through crafting and selling the item through possible auction house to other players...

Interesting how they will balance it out.

Please keep in mind that some countries have a gore-censor law. No blood for folks under 18 etc... This is in Germany, maybe they got that to.

    @Permamaxim

Starcraft 2 was changing models, SFX, and animations well until up to the end of the beta.

These death animations are no different than previous videos since 2008. I was hoping they improved them but no difference.

Perhaps no blood on the ground has something to do with what you say.

    @konfeta

More than 2 years have passed since the announcement. Can you see any improvement on models, sfx and animations?

Re: GamesCom Info Revealed - Introducing Artisans

Gameplay creation comes before making it pwetty. And the artists were probably busy creating the initial art/modeling/animations/whatever passes on other acts, monsters, bosses, etc.

You don't want to focus your energy and time on things that might get significant changes or even get cut.

Its an interesting incorporation of things that already exist in other blizzard games and tweaks to the crafting system itself. Actually, it borrows the most from Hellgate: London in terms of the Artisian itself. But, like everything Blizzard does, it never just borrows, it borrows and tweaks to make it feel better than the original.

I think that wasn't the case in SC2 production. 3 years after the announcement the game was released. Those changes you mentioned in graphics happened early.
