    gambling boots and belts

My gf barb is sick of goldwrap and infernostride so I decided to let him use a part of his profits to gamble rare belts/boots. Before I start, I decided to do a little research. According to AS the possible prefixes/suffixes for boots are the following sorted by ilvl:

    Code:
    1	10-30% ed
    1	1-2 Mana
    1	1 light radius
    1	5% fr
    1	5% cr
    1	5% lr
    1	5% pr
    1	5-10 Stamina
    1	10% heal stamina
    1	[I]1 dex[/I]
    3	3-5 Mana
    3	[I]self-repair[/I]
    5	5-10% fr
    5	5-10% cr
    5	5-10% lr
    5	5-10% pr
    5	[I]10 fhr[/I]
    6	2 light radius
    6	25% heal stamina
    7	[I]psn length -25%[/I]
    8	11-20 Stamina
    9	31-40% ed
    10	[I]half freeze duration[/I]
    12	11-20% fr
    12	11-20% cr
    12	11-20% lr
    12	11-20% pr
    12	[I]5-15 mf[/I]
    12	[I]10 frw[/I]
    13	[I]2-3 dex[/I]
    14	50% heal stamina
    16	21-30 Stamina
    16	[I]16-25 mf[/I]
    17	[I]41-80 gf[/I]
    18	21-30% fr
    18	21-30% cr
    18	21-30% lr
    18	21-30% pr
    19	41-50% ed
    20	[I]fast self-repair[/I]
    22	[I]20 frw[/I]
    25	51-65% ed
    25	31-40% fr
    25	31-40% cr
    25	31-40% lr
    25	31-40% pr
    30	def / clvl
    31	66-80% ed
    34	[I]4-5 dex[/I]
    36	81-100% ed
    37	11-20 Mana
    37	[I]30 frw[/I]
    46	[I]6-9 dex[/I]
    50	101-200% ed
    50	[I]indestructible[/I]
    50	[I]1-23 lt dmg[/I]
    52	31-40 Mana
    70	[I]3-5 replenish life[/I]

Taking into account the possible mods and the ilvls it looks like a good idea to aim for ilvl 18 minimum. This means a clvl of 23, so expected ilvls are 18-27. This includes the ilvl 25 31-40 resists, which is good, and misses: 30 frw, 6-9 dex, 31-40 mana along with another 9 not too useful mods. Hmm... on to the belts!

    Code:
    1	10-30% ed
    1	1-2 Mana

    55	[I]1-6 cold dmg[/I]
    55	[I]6-9 replenish life[/I]
    58	[I]16-20 str[/I]
    71	[I]21-30 str[/I]

Oddly enough ilvl 18 is good for belts too. Upto it we have covered 24 fhr, 41-80fg and the resists. Upto 27 we also get some not too bad life an d str mods. After ilvl 27 (effectively 30) we have 11 mods out of which 4 might be worth it.

Other stuff to think about: At clvl 23 you cannot use Edge or Gheeds (Edge requires clvl 25 because of the Amn and Gheed's 62). Furthermore you only get to carry 380K gold (150K stash + 230K on char). BUT the mean cost of a belt or a pair of boots is less than 5K, which means you get to gamble 76 items. I haven't done the math, but it looks like it's more than what I can gamble with my clvl 82 barb with Gheeds and Edge. Additionally we are only spending 380K, while a high level char would spend 3000K gold per reload from the good old atma bank (or gold xfer for bnet).

Where I am getting at is, could it be that clvl 23 is the best clvl for gambling belts and boots? What do you guys think?

    Re: gambling boots and belts

What you have listed is alvl, not ilvl.

I almost agree with you when it comes to boots (that is, gamble Boots, the lowliest type), but I would not want to miss out on the 40% single element resists. I would want to guarantee alvl 25. To to that when you gamble Boots (Boots have qlvl=3, so in most cases alvl=ilvl-3/2=ilvl-1) So I would choose to gamble with a level 31 character.

For belts, I really want 4-row belts, so I go for Plated Belts. They have qlvl=27, which means the item level needs to be 27/2=13 levels higher than the affix level one is after. I really like have a guaranteed ilvl so that 'of the Colossus' can spawn, so in the case of Plated Belts, I´d pick a level 48 character.

can't you just upgrade belts for the right amount of belt-rows?

Hmm, it seems d2 is more complicated than I thought. So, alvl = ilvl-qlvl/2? Is there a qlvl list?
If qlvls vary alot based on the item type will make it harder to come up with a fixed clvl, given that it is very boring to aim for specific item types (e.g. chain boots) when gambling. In order to not bore yourself to death while gambling I think it is crucial to pick up 1-2 items per gambling screen, else it becomes too cumbersome :/.
Also you can upgrade belts to get 4 rows.

Edit: pwned on the upgrade thing

    Re: gambling boots and belts

MAJOR UPDATE: I did some more work on this; jiansoz was naturally right, I consulted the very thorough item generation tutorial. However the basic principle still applies. I am currently gambling with a clvl 26 character boots, heavy boots, sashes and light belts (I won't go on to analyse why, but it is easy to figure out). The cost is minimal and you really get the gold's worth.

I already have 2 nice rare belts and hotspurs :) with less than 2M gold spent (my gf barb gets as much in less than 5 runs).

PS: My initial analysis lacks the procing suffixes, but they are all below alvl 18 for belts and boots, so there is not much you can do.

    Re: gambling boots and belts

Just a note: AS's Boots affix list is wrong. It's missing some stuff and some of the Ilvls/Alvls/(Your term here) are wrong.

Personally, I think you'd be better off cubing rare boots, if for no other reason than you can get more affixes. This is a good thing, since there really are no "great" unique boots. A lucky rare boot has the potential to outdo any unique boot in the game. I'd much rather have a rare with:

    200% ED
    40% to 3 resists
    30% FRW
    80% GF
    10% FHR
    25% MF

    than a magic with:

    40% FRW
    35% MF

    Kel

Edit: One more correction :p Only 4 of 7 of proc suffixes available on boots are below Ilvl 18, the rest are above..significantly.

    Code:
    Suffix Ilvl Effect
of Charged Bolt 6 10% Chance to cast Level 3 Charged Bolt when struck
of Frost Shield 12 5% Chance to cast Level 3 Frost Nova when struck
of Charged Bolt 16 12% Chance to cast Level 4 Charged Bolt when struck
of Nova Shield 18 10% Chance to cast Level 3 Nova when struck
of Charged Bolt 26 14% Chance to cast Level 5 Charged Bolt when struck
of Nova Shield 28 12% Chance to cast Level 4 Nova when struck
of Nova Shield 38 14% Chance to cast Level 5 Nova when struck

So if that newer list is true, what level would I want to be to have the best chance of gambling for the "of luck" suffix on chain boots?

    Re: gambling boots and belts

Well, that list isn't really "updated", it may even be older. All I know is it's way more accurate than AS, (aka Error at Summit). As part of my calculating changes to roll/gamble a JMOD I did like I'm guessing you did: go through AS and maje a list of all the affixes for that particular item type. Once I started noticing I was getting gamblied shields with affixes not on the AS list, I decided it was time for a better source.

To answer your question. Using the link above, it says 'of Luck' is alvl=26. If you gamble, then the item ilvl and affix alvls will range between -5/+4 of your clvl. To always get an Ilvl=26 item, you'd need to be level 31.

I was going to post how many other affixes appeared between Alvl 26-34 (which would be your range when gambling from 31) and what the chances of getting of luck were, but the site crashed. If you want to figure it out, go back to the above link and check the Of Luck box and hit the button at the bottom. Your chances to get that affix will be printed at the top of the page. It's definitely a pretty handy calc..when it works.

Now if you really, really needed Of Luck boots, you could also find a normal or exceptional boot of exactly Ilvl=32 (since qlvl applies for found items' affixes, iirc) and just cube it with gems. BY doing that, you'd exclude the 10 level range you get when gambling, and probably have a slightly better chance of that specific affix.

    Re: gambling boots and belts

But ilvl is not the same as affix level.
Ilvl range between -5/+4 of your clvl, but alvl is calculated from this ilvl and qlvl of the base item.

With chain boots, you will need at least ilvl=32 to get the chance for of Luck spawn. of Luck is magic only suffix, so te best way to obtain such a boots is shopping for them. Unfortunatly you can't get chain boots of luck from Fara or Asheara on normal, because the ilvl of shopped items is capped in normal (ilvl 20 in act2, 28 in act 3).
You can shop Light Plated Boots in 4th act, you need ilvl=36 Light Plated Boots, you can shop them with character level 31 (Bought items have ilvl=clvl+5)

    Shopping calculator

Shopping for them with higher level character might get you higher affix level > more suffixes > less chance for of Luck suffix.

    Re: gambling boots and belts

My character is 36 now. So, if I wanted boots with 35% MF, I should try shopping Gheed and Charsi right now, since I'm only as far as A1 NM? Although to be honest, I already have magic boots with 25%MF, it's probably a waste of time just to up it 10 more points.

EDIT: Actually, I'd like to take this time to edit this post. I'm getting confused by all the different levels and statistics attributed to each singular item, as well as all the math involved in calculating them (I was an English major...). First, the affixcalc. Once I have chosen which item to look at, I am shown a chart. What exactly is the "Level" column referring to? The affix level?

And correct me if I'm wrong on the following:
    alvl = ilvl-qlvl/2
ilvl = -5/+4 of your current character level (clvl)
qlvl = predetermined and set level of any given item at any given time?

For the qlvl, where do I find an accurate list of each item's qlvl? And what does the 'q' stand for?

    Re: gambling boots and belts

Yeah, you need to know this stuff if you want to use affixcalc right.

ilvl = item level. Hidden (it could be seen in Atma if you play SP) property of the item, basically it determines how far in the game the item was acquired - the definition is not good and also it's irrelevant.

if dropped from monster: ilvl=monster level. You can find regular monster levels for normal difficulty at Arreat Summit, for NM and Hell difficulty, it's equal to area level (strategy compendium), champions mlvl are +2 and random bosses are +3 compared to regular monsters. Act bosses and special superuniques like Smith or Nihlathak have their own mlvl (Arreat Summit) some other (usually those who share the monster type with some regular monster - like Pindleskin or Eldritch) have simply +3 as random bosses.

if bought from vendors: ilvl = character level +5, but it's capped in normal difficulty to:
    Act 1 : 12
    Act 2 : 20
    Act 3 : 28
    Act 4 : 36
    Act 5 : 45

if gamled, ilvl= (randomly from character lvl -5 to character level +4).
IIRC it is at least ilvl5 when gambled, but I am not sure now...

Type this ilvl to affix calc after you choose the item type
in the window next to text "Item-Level (1-99):"

qlvl (quality level) - is tight to basic item type, depending on this quality level, the items are sorted into TC groups - in TC3 you will have qlvl 1-3 items like dagger, short sword etc., in TC87 you will have the most rare items like Berserker axe, War Pike, Hydra Bow etc..

You don't need to know qlvl if you use affixcalc, but you can find it on Arreat Summit.

This is true only in some cases.

    Re: gambling boots and belts

As said, that depends on the base qlvl of the boots. Play around a bit with the mentioned affix calculator until you have a minimim ilvl for a certain kind of boots at which all the affixes can appear and add 5. That's the optimum character level for gambling them.

I for myself prefer picking up rare boots and belts from monster drops while using gold on rings and (from about L90 on... L95 would be optimum) amulets or (from L87 on) coronets.
