Friendly Fire?

Re: Friendly Fire?

Most of the reasons against FF have already been spoken, but just to throw my hat in the ring, here are the three biggest reasons it would be a terrible idea:

1) Why remove PK only to include FF? It's the same thing except you get no hostility warning. It would be an open invitation to grief, which they don't want to encourage.
Did you read my post? I doubt. Maybe comment over my post heh?

Skipping the mddle pages (cause I value my time and can't afford reading others' +1-s) I want to mention that D2(LoD) has/had similar kind of FF - TPPK!
In 1.11 this was kind of fixed for the most Imba Character - the Hammerdin - making his Hammerfields to Disappear as soon as he enters Town but back in 1.10 that was bloody nightmare!

Let me go back and check, considering I read the whole thread but failed to memorize everyone's opinion...

Gotcha. A check box to turn FF on or off when creating a game. Fine. A votekick or kick rights. Reasonable for more than just this reason. Still doesn't change my opinion that FF detracts from as much as it adds to the strategy in a game with as much action and as little space as Diablo 3.

Good to know that you found this options viable. For me FF is more interesting that hardcore mode and spice game in better way. If they implemented hardcore mode with is stupid because it is just simple rule and i don't know why people don't just delete characters on their own after death but whatever they should add FF as options too.

Anyway diablo2 was to easy game compared to d1 and one of reason was lack of FF and by friendly fire i mean not only players relation but your own spells, in diablo2 spells cannot hurt you what is stupid and make game much more easy and boring when i cameback to d1 from d2 i died from my own firewall as i step in because i forgot, in d2 sorceress cannot be hurt by her own spells so you can drop meteors all day on your head making game much more easy and this way less enjoyable for me.

You can have friendly fire as an option, but I guarantee less than 1% of players will use it.

I think even if you were tongue kissing your pker with how close you are it would still wouldn't be considered friendly fire. He doesn't accidentally hurt you with hammers, he goes to town and purposely tries to hurt you by hostiling you.

Personally I don't think FF adds much but you can diminish griefing by making a penalty for the perpetrator of FF. It could be a simple redirection of the damage to him, or setting him back a level for each PK he makes that way. There's all kinds of things you can think of.

One of the most interesting methods I've seen implemented to create team-play was employeed in the nintendo 64 game perfect dark. (I'm getting to a point) If you haven't played it what they did was make it so that the team shared a repository of 'new health' that would determine how much life you started with when you died and came back. Each player death would diminish this 'new health' repository with each passing player death.

Ok, that point I was getting to is this, rather than being concerned with how the FF system would work maybe the more important issue is 'how to make it matter to the player that they don't hurt another player?'. Which might have been what you were saying stephan however I wanted to show that a priority exists in that making it matter to the players is more important than any fancy method of FF implementation we can think up. :)

Re: Friendly Fire?

I don't care for the idea. There are other ways of added layers of strategy to D3 besides adding FF. From the videos we've seen, there is too much going on to worry about FF.

Besides, when has Diablo ever been about massive amounts of strategy? It has always been about fighting off hordes of enemies as a group.

Havent read many of the replies but i say no to FF. Simply because it will hold player groups back... I want to blast monsters in my diablo game without worriying if my mass area of effect wizard spells will hurt my allies.

Wow FF would have been annoying, people accidently kill you or just for the fun of it. I would probably be the one killing for fun. :/ Useless idea!

Anyone thinking that Blizz would even think of adding FF to D3 or that it would be a good idea is living on a dream and utopic world.

Re: Friendly Fire?

I meant dreamy and utopic world because anyone in favor of FF, thinking it will add to the strategy, forgot the fact that most of the bnet kids would just use it to grief, grief and grief.

If the world was only made of intelligent and sane people then maybe FF would be interesting but no, with the removal of Pking to prevent grieving its completely ridiculous to even suggest the addition of FF on D3.
