Frenzy Mechanics?

Frenzy Mechanics?

I kind of searched around but couldn't find a detailed discussion on what I wanted to know.

I have a lvl 25 barbarian right now at beginning of act 3. Dual wielding axes. Have to after the D3 vid. Been running mostly on p3, except for a few times I forget to do it when game starts.

Anyways. I've been using Double Swing most of the game. It's pretty nice for instant hitting mobs so they can't hit back. But now I have Frenzy and I'm not liking it. It seems like just a regular attack and I do notice a running speed increase but not sure about the attack speed.

I need to know how it increases attack speed.

Say I take a swing at lvl 1 Frenzy. I hit and get the 7 percent increase in attack speed. I swing a second later and hit again. Do I have a 14 percent increase or is it just 7 percent?

If I have a 14 percent increase to attack speed, (Frenzy has a 6 second duration) do I lose 7 percent after 5 seconds do to the first frenzy hit's duration being over, or when you hit multiple times does the increase to attack speed compound and refresh the duration rate so I have say 6 seconds of 50 percent from 3 or 4 hits in a row at later levels of Frenzy? Does a missed attack reset you to 0 bonus?

I didn't notice a difference with the damage or attack rating so I'm guessing those stay the same.

Also the 1 percent increase to magic damage synergy from Berserk. Does that take your damage and 1 percent of it is magical? Or is some of the damage done in Frenzy considered magic damage. I'm a little confused on what that means. Because if you do 0 magic damage, adding 1 percent should still mean 0 magic damage.

It seems like at this point in the game though that as long as I can still hit with Double Swing I should, because hitting the mobs quickly usually doesn't give them a chance to react and attack, but I notice when using Frenzy they can get hits and other stuff inbetween my swings.

For each successful hit your attack and walk speed will increase 1 lvl of Frenzy until you reach your slvl. So if you have a level 10 frenzy, the first hit will give you the speed increase of a level 1 frenzy, the second of level 2, the third of level 3, and this goes on up to level 10. Successful hits after this won't increase the speed anymore, but they will reset the 6 second timer.

In your case you will be stuck at level 1.

If you don't manage to hit a target in 6 seconds, the whole bonus is gone.

It takes X% of your physical damage, and converts it to magical. It doesn't add damage, it converts it.

The difference between Frenzy and Double Swing will become most apparent later in the game, and in the early game I'd say DS has a big advantage over Frenzy.

Ok so I'm looking at arreat.

First hit is always 7 percent increase in attack speed, while 2nd hit would be 13 percent, 3rd hit would be 22? I guess I was thinking the 7-13 percent or something was a range for increase of attack speed per hit.

So does that mean after 3 hits you have a 22 percent(1st hit 7 percent, 2nd 13 percent, 3rd 22 percent) increase in attack speed, or does it do 7 percent plus 13 plus 22 equaling 42 percent increase in attack speed? I'm guessing it's the first because compounding it like that would increase it too much, but just want to be sure because it only seems like you can get to 40 percent max if you do it the first way. Which seems kind of low.

Assuming you have a minimum of level 3 Frenzy yes. If Frenzy is only level 1 you're stuck at 7%.

I don't think it's like Stephan suggests - imho it goes to full speed (written at your skill description) in 3 or 4 hits regardless of Frenzy level), Stephan any source you got this from?

Also IAS from Frenzy is not the same as IAS from equipment. It's called skill IAS and it's usually more efficient than IAS from equipment.

Just use Weapon Speed calculator, I am not in the mood to search for exact algorithm, which is too complex so you will not use it anyways...

I asked this question a while ago on the AB. I can post the link, but AFAIK it's not allowed by forum rules. I'm sure the 3-4 hits doctrine is wrong though. The problem with such observations is that an increase in IAS% does not necessarily mean an increase in attacks per second and I've seen my speed increase way after 4 hits. There certainly has never been any conformation for '3-4 hits reaches max speed' anyway, what kind of IAS steps it should take then, or what happens if you have a level 1 Frenzy.

An interesting thread...

Is this really true?

When im playing my frenzy barb it feels like max speed is reached after 3-4 hits (like Hrus says...).
I haven't played that much so I might be wrong though...

Re: Frenzy Mechanics?

it surely LOOKS like attack speed max is reached in ~4 hits, but if the animation was going at 5 attacks per second it'd be silly (but cool haha), but you could also see the hits knocking away enemy hp, but good luck counting the hits that fast.. my point is, I'm willing to believe either of your explanations.

Anyone know what the speed of attack cap is when running frenzy?

I've got some +increased attack speed items, and using v fast weapons, and I'm not sure what the maximum swings number would be.

Re: Frenzy Mechanics?

Rafaell, I think the break point is at 5 attacks/second. my barb reaches it with 40% ias in his phase blade grief, so i don't require anymore ias items.

theres an attack speed calculator on the page before this thread, in the guides/useful stuff sticky post. it's pretty self explanatory.

Thanks Pork :)
I'm having a hard time finding good weapons for my frenzy barb at the moment. But at least I know what to look out for in terms of speed. In theory, anyway.
