FPS: Does everyone else's fps drop to 0 after killing Shenk?

I figure d2 would fly on my currect pc compared to when the game came out.

    I'm running a

    P4 2.4c oc'd 2.89
    1GB memory
    GeForce 5950

Is there any speed tweaks? It should not run this slow.

it's unavoidable, the frame-rate goes right down when you kill shenk no matter what computer you have, and what mode you set your graphics to.

Best way to avoid that is to TP out immediately after he dies and go back in.

I'm at 800x600 and I turned off the extra lighting and stuff in the graphics options. I do run away, but I dont see where the all slowness is coming from.

Would it run better on my 300a oc'd to 450MHz with a voodoo3 video card? (I think I read about some glide drivers being available) There has to be someone who knows some tweaks.

Copy the video and music files from your CD into your D2 directory.
The game was written for voodoo cards, period.
There are wrappers out there for D2, though.

I believe so.. Yes, it would run better even on a 300MHz with a Voodoo card. The special effects were just made for this card.. at that time it was quite powerful. It's still better to run DirectDraw, even on faster cpu's. Even so, I occasionally get that slow framerate after killing Shenk on my 1.8GHz 512ram.

its the meteors that spam after shenk is killed that cause the problem
d2's d3d and ddraw graphics engines cant handle all the flames ect..
i never had a problem with him running glide on 2x voodoo2 sli or voodoo3

I hate that, mine freezes on diablo and baal to. That means I miss the drops completly.

    I have a 3.5ghz/RadeonXT1600 512mb/1GB ram

I shouldent be getting any low fps in diablo..

Lol, I have exact same config for my comp:grin: . Anyways it doesnt make much of a difference, since auto-pickers will beat you at every time(happens all the time in baal runs).

AFAIK it's particularly bad when Shenk had some kind of enchantment (lightning ?) and/or multi-shot or something like that. That somehow influences the death animation.

For speed problems try setting your video settings to Direct2D as opposed to Direct3D, you loose a few graphical effects but it should work faster.

As Merick said, copying the sound files will keep that post kill lag from coming up. It tries to play a sound/music file from the CD after the kill, which causes the lag.

I will try to mess with the direct3d/2d thing tonight. Thx for the suggestions.

2d worked fine for me. I had the same lag issues on killing Diablo too btw.

Multi-shot is what affects Shenk's "catapult rain" death animation causing the sprite display limit problem.
