This is a moment of silence and respect post.

Sgts. Mark Dunakin, 40, of Tracy,
Erv Romans, 43, of Danville,
Daniel Sakai, 35, of Castro Valley,
Motorcycle Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord,

Thats all I have to say in this thread.
Thanks.

Well, that, and the "America is nothing more than a U.N. member" point of view.

Of course, Sandcat may be no more living in Namibia than Donny is Australian, but the concept of government ruling the people and granting them freedoms rather than the other way around is nearly universal. And by default, the corruption and nepotism of the state is most visible in the police, unless the army <is> the police.

I'm not blasting the comfort level that many people have with that concept, rest assured. I remember how safe Northern Ireland felt, with the police wearing flak jackets & toting sub-machine guns, traffic checkpoints everywhere, and my wife's purse being inspected when entering commercial areas. Germany and Spain were far less invasive, despite the unusual sight of police meandering around casually pointing sub-machine guns at passer-by.

I sure didn't feel 'free'.
Let me get this straight... you're complaining about a foreign person being inspected when arriving to a country by armed officials? I thought you were big on security of borders. And you do realise that the "we the people" jargon is the basic of almost any given constitution. It's not how much the belief is coined or necessarily even how widely it's accepted, it's how well it's implemented. Take the terrible socialist havens of Nordic countries for example - there's a strong belief in the people, not the current ruler, being the sovereign, but I'm sure you'd feel even less free than the front of those sub-machineguns.

I would also like to remind you that "corruption" is a term varying in meaning. While you obviously classify, for example, the Nordic all-encompassingness of labour unions to be such (and are arguably right! They are, after a non-parliamentic organ or pressure group dealing with political parties, and in this respect no better than big money lobbyists), the CPI points out that the degree of corruption is not necessarily the least where you think it is.

That's why we (as Americans) theoretically don't have to put up with Janjaweed slave traders, Dictators-for-life, or food rationing.
I'm regrettably not well-read on the times of the home front in U.S. during the WWII, but were no goods really rationed? I know you had a strong economy, but that is really a surprise.

No, I'm not complaining at all. I may not be explaining this well, but I <know> you can read better than that.

I'm attempting to describe the underlying differences in the way that the citizenry views the role of the government and how the government is allowed to operate. America rose in a wilderness from a bunch of libertarian liberals, while many of the governments you're considering either spawn from royal power or are ex-colonies of those same countries' discarded empires.

The subject at hand are the police, and the filter which people view them through! {/raps WB's knuckles with ruler}

There <was> rationing; it simply wasn't as pervasive or unpleasant as other countries'.

We had rationing in Sweden. They rationed red meat, butter and gasoline. Everybody ate greens and walked or took the bike to work. The country has never been in as good health as we where back then. People where organizing walking tours where people met at an area then all walked together to work.

I know what you were trying to relay, it just was somewhat thick in personal sentiments of how you felt about other countries rather than showing any real difference in perception of government between, say, U.S. and Europe in general.

That's funny, because just few posts back you said the subject at hand was

Thanks, that was a good read.
