First ever MF

First ever MF

OK, so here's me, having never really made a high level character despite having played on and off for years. But this time I'm gonna do it. I've spent the last couple of days levelling my Skellimancer Necro on Europe to clvl 50, and I fully intend to get in on all this item trading and whatnot.

The question is "How?"

How did you first get on the ladder? Where did you get your first few items from? I'm looking for strategies or advice. For example, it's all well and good saying that such and such an elite item will trade for one or two of these other elite items, but these things always seem to be written from the point of view of someone who already has pretty much one of everything.

Is it worth hoarding gems or low level runes? Can those be traded away for the beginnings of the kind of gear required to tool up and begin doing Hell MF runs for myself? What about the low level set items / rares? (e.g. +1 to Barbarian Combat Skills amulet) - worth anything, or should I just chuck 'em at beginners?

Or should I just knuckle down and start doing lower level MF runs, and hope that that will sort me out? Where should I be doing MF runs at clvl 50? Should I do public games (where I inevitably end up picking up the blue dregs of a boss drop after everyone else has snatched 'em :uhhuh: ) or private ones, where I'm guaranteed to keep the booty?

What about muling tips and tricks?

I guess all I'm looking for is an explanation of how to go about creating my first ever MF character from somebody who can remember not knowing themselves :uhhuh: I've seen plenty of MF guides, but most of them eventually come down to "Right, use this godly elite MF item that you already have from one of your other characters..."

Any advice or answers to this barrage of questions would be much appreciated...

Cheers guys,

Basic starting principles IMHO.

1- Make a character that can solo most popular MF areas in hell. (skelliemancer is a good choice.)

2- Get your beginning MF gear together. (3 Perfect topaz helm, 4 Perfect topaz and rare rings, ammy, boots and belt with MF on them that also complement your char. All this can easily be accumulated/made through normal playing. Trade gems/low runes you dont need for Ptopazes)

3- Start MFing in NM to get you started and develop your strategies until you're strong/equipped enough to move on to hell. (Once you find items with some desireabilty, start trading them for "better" MF gear for yourself. Lots of stuff you can find in NM will be good enough to trade for the "mid-lvl" MF gear: Goldwrap, Nagel rings, Skullders, Tarnhelm etc....)

4- Once you have your mid-lvl stuff together, move into Hell and complete your setup with the godliest stuff around. This can be the REALLY long part of making your top MFer. (Enigma, Shako, IST runes etc....)

The most important thing I tell my friends that start out is .... dont spread yourself too thin. Do not make 12 characters you need to equip at first. Start with 1 MF character that you will equip very well. By the time that is done, you'll have plenty of stuff lying around to equip new characters decently, and you can always get back on your crazy MFer to find/trade stuff for them as you go.
