fire enchanted monsters

would 95% fire resist make me able to tank every fire enchanted monster? (ancients and so on)

I can't answer that conclusively-- but I'm in hell with ~1.5k hp and I've been tanking FE monster deaths with hotspurs (+15% max fire res)... haven't tried vs ridiculous hp monsters like Ancients though.

Honestly wouldn't recommend trying it. Go ahead, get 95%, but test in SC/SP.

I believe the FE explosion is half fire damage, and half physical damage (like CE). It's also based on the monsters Hit Points, so it scales up with the more players that enter the game.

It's not too bad in Norm. They (blizzard) toned it down in Hell so it's not quite as horrible, but still dangerous. In NM it's at full strength and completely lethal, 95% fire resist or not.

If a monster has 10,000 HP (which I don't think is unreasonable in games with more than 5 players), and the FE pop does 60% of that monsters damage, it will do you for 6,000 damage (3,000 fire, and 3,000 physical).

With 95% fire resist you'd take 150 fire damage, which is certainly reasonable. However, you'd also take 3,000 physical damage as well... deeds.

Now add Amp damage into that equation, 6,000 physical damage... deeds.

Now try it on a monster with lots of hit points, like NM lister in a full game, or Hell Ancients in a 3 or 4 player game... deeds.

There is also Conviction and Lower Resist to worry about too. You can try tanking them if you want, but I think "if you play with fire long enough you'll get burned."

Note: The above numbers are guesses, and only intended to help illustrate my point.

A Werewolf with a strong Oaksage and boots like Hotspurs or Infernostrides can tank most NM FEs, but it's still dangerous. An FE Threshsocket took me to an inche of my life recently. (AMP)

Basically, my rules for tanking FEs are as follows:

Nightmare -- Here, FEs are at their full strength and do thousands of damage, so I let my merc finish them and stay far away.

Hell - Here, it's toned down but monsters have huge hit points so it's dangerous anyway, so I let my merc finish them and stay far away.

Normal -- Here, the FEs are tankable, but I don't want to get into any bad habits for later on, so I let my merc finish them and stay far away.

That's my two cents!:azn:

Two cents of good advice!

That reminds me of a hell game I'd partied with a twinked paladin questing through act 3 to travi, speeding ahead of me most of the time. Lucky chap found a sur rune on the way but forgot FE council uniques.

I sprinted all the way from the waypoint straight through the door and BO'd 0.5 seconds before the explosion took his life below 30%.

He gave me a load of useful stuff for the favor.

Which is nice:smiley:

An alternate means of defeating creatures in Hardcore is essential. Being overpowered in one skill will eventually get you killed just as much as being underpowered. Check out the top 16 of the druid Euro HC exp ladder.

FE monsters are very dangerous. Even with sorbs there are high risk you will die.

I've seen so many good char dyign from it.

A lvl 96 12k life barb/max resist 1 hit KO
A lvl 94 Cser pally Hotspurs/2x dawrf 1 hit KO
A lvl 94 Ele druid with very high OAk 1 hit KO

Avoid it!

should i avoid lister and ancients? or every FE monster? (95% fire res, around 15% dam reduction)

Any monster that generally has lots of hit points should be avoided. So, an FE Carver is probably reasonable to try and tank, on the other hand it might be wise to try and avoid something like an FE Blood Lord.

And remember, the more people in your game, the more dangerous it is. Would you rather wait an extra 30 seconds while your merc kills it? or would you rather spend an extra week re-building your character?

It's a pain at first, but you will get used to it and it's not so bad.

I generally find things to do while my minions take the FE monster down, like killing some stray monsters, opening chests and stashes, picking through items and gold on the ground, or sorting out my inventory.

I've actually heard that nightmare fire enchant is bugged, or something along those lines. A friend of mine lost his 86 necro to a fire enchanted lister, etc. I know this is a common story, especially amongst barbarians and hammerdins.

So is this a rumor?

Either way, it hurts...
So yeah. Stay away from it.
