    Fines in school zones

In a neighboring town the fines for speeding in a school zone is being raised up from $10 to $100.

To complicate matters, the town has three different school zones signs.
One says from 7 am to 4:30 pm
One says when children are present
One says when the light is flashing

What do you think about this? Are higher fines the way to slow people down? Or do you think the city is just getting more revenue?

I think it's a good idea but lacks the proper financial "incentive"
    First offense - $250 fine
    Second offense - $400 fine
Third offense - vehicle impounded. They call the cab company

The first two offenses take care of the people to whom the money means something. There are people though that even $400 is chump change. Those people are the ones with the expensive toys. The Hummers, the BMWs, etc. The money may not mean much to them, but the loss of their toy would be.

I don't think of them as speed limit signs, I consider them revenue generation equipment.

The one that says "when children are present" often tricks MANY motorists. The catch with it is that the speed limit essentially applies at all times. If a cop stops you for speeding because you were doing 35 in a "25 when children are present" zone, and you reply that there were no children, it won't be enough to get off the hook. The cop could simply question your ability to see every possible place a child could be, at every instant. Or, he could simply say taht children "could" be present at any time.

I think speeding fines should increase exponentially for a steady increase in over-the-limit speeds. Like, somebody whose over the limit by 3 mph should get a small fine (if any at all), but somebody doing 30 over the limit shouldn't get 10 times the 3mph fine; I'd say more like 100 times. Doing 30 over on the highway is almost normal, but if you're doing 55 in a 25 then you deserve a high fine.

I was thinking along the same lines the other day. There is a school for the mentally ******** and they have a school zone. The itty bitty sign says 20 mph during the hours of 7-8:30. They also have a flashing light alerting you that the speed zone is in effect. The other day, it was flashing at 9:30 am. That is an hour past the expiration of the school zone speed limit. It gets rather confusing sometimes. Around here, it takes them about 3 weeks to cease the school zone flashers when summer break rolls around.

What's with all that crap about different school zones? Around here there's school zones, and parks. School zones are from 7am to 5pm, and parks are from 7am to dusk. Bastards just confuse you to make money.

You know those stupid "Keep kids Alive, Drive 25" signs? Bought one, changed it to read "Keep kids Alive, Keep them off the damn street and on the sidewalk where they belong." I had pissed off parents knocking on my door in an hour.

Go the lowest speed. If it says when children are present drive at 25, drive at 25 whenever you pass that way.

I hate those signs, as I drive to school I pass through 3 different school zones so I can never speed, and if I go the regualar speed I thnk it would be exhibition of speed. ARG

    ^^^

Don't drive like a dick in areas where kids might be. And don't whine about "the state trying to make money off of me" when you get caught doing it.

Is that an insult? Don't know. Well, I just knew some guy who got hit by a bus crossing the road... So yeah, drive at 25.

Durf is right. The correct course of action would be to cry and show a little cleavage. A short story about how you have "feminine problems" and nothing to stem the tide works well too.
