    Finding Mephisto

Is there any sort of method to getting to the 3rd level of the Durance efficently?

I seem to waste a lot of time here and often die trying to find the third level when doing my mephisto runs.

I can find level 1 like a champ, but level 3 always seems to elude me for a while.

It's usually clockwise from the waypoint.

However, I've often had to clear almost the entire Durance 2 map before finally seeing the entrance. Not a trip for those without Insight/low teleport cost, that's for sure.

    Re: Finding Mephisto

This is still kinda random, but...

When facing the door/entry to the next room from the durance waypoint...if you turn left...that will be the direction you will enter the room that leads to durance 3 from.

Example: You're at the waypoint, and have to go north to get to the next room...so left from there would be west. This doesn't men the room will be to the west every time, but that you will enter the room from an east direction...heading west into the room. So, ya, it makes sense to usually start out going clockwise.

Hope this 1) makes sense, and 2) helps a bit.

    Re: Finding Mephisto

It's counterclockwise... (basically I'm agreeing with TG) it is however only valid for ~75% of my runs.

For the countess, the counterclockwise pattern is much more closely observed though.

On same subject, does anyone have any pointers for Andy? =/

For andy go right on cata 2 and on 3 most of the time it's usually right up or right down.

No, it's clockwise. If the outer wall is on your left shoulder, then you're going clockwise. For Meph, you always want to go clockwise along the outer wall, unless you want to take the chance that cutting at an angle will work (and, in my experience, it will fail just as often (or more) as it will succeed).

Clockwise is routinely the shortest path for Meph. Of course, every once in a while you get a lovely map like this.

Also, the Countess is also clockwise (read: outer-wall on left-shoulder). Reliably.

    I don't run Andy, so I can't even guess a pattern there.

Except for that 1 in 20 runs where it's just 1 step CCW. If you are lucky, you will see it when you enter the level.

    Re: Finding Mephisto

Turning left is counterclockwise for me, if you look from the top of things (as we somewhat do in D2) =/

    Re: Finding Mephisto

It's clockwise, with respect to the whole map. Maybe you want to say that it is CCW w.r.t. to the character (which it is), but that is a confusing and bad notation.

    Re: Finding Mephisto

W.r.t the character or the map, I still fail to see how turning left can be clockwise...

But I think we're going outta the subject lol

    Re: Finding Mephisto

Just take a screen shot of the map, and travel once among its edge until you get back to the WP the way you described it. Draw your path with an arrow with direction. You will see that your path is clearly clockwise, w.r.t. to the center of the map.

    Re: Finding Mephisto

    That's why!

If you go from lvl3 to WP, it is clockwise; but if you go from WP to lvl3 (as a MFer would do... or so I hope), it's counterclockwise :)

    Re: Finding Mephisto

So...let me see if I understand.

When I go to the waypoint. I want to turn my left shoulder to the outerwall and then proceed clockwise?

    Re: Finding Mephisto

Basically, you want to hug the outer edge of the map so that you are going clockwise, with respect to the center of the map.

:O I finally see what you mean...

I'm still more comfortable with the other way to look at it though. Guess I'll keep that to myself...

    Re: Finding Mephisto

Clockwise is even more reliable for Countess than for Meph IMO. I think it's 99% of the time. As for Andy, most of the time I find the entrance to Catacombs 3 running CCW. For Cata 4 I haven't find any reliable pattern :/. I still go CCW though...

    Re: Finding Mephisto

I'm noticing for Andy it seems to be clockwise going from 2 to 3 and counter clockwise going from 3 to 4.

Might be a coincedence so far, but it seems to be holding up.

I'm finally finding level 3 of the durance pretty regularly now going clockwise.

You could always have some pots on belt slot #4
(they are available for sale for quite a while... no real need for insight)
