Finally, my first Guardian! Ron the Kodiak Bear

Although it started out extremely slow, by Hell, he was one of the most fun characters I've played so far. There's nothing like a 4-frame attack. He could have been a lot more deadly, but I choose to play on the defensive side of things because of how many deaths I've been having recently, so instead of maxing werebear and maul, I opted to get some meatshields in Direwolves.

As far as gameplay, I would have to say he's pretty much like a combination of the best parts of a berzerker (extreme safety + pretty good damage) and a holyfreeze zealer (CB and fast attackspeed). He could tear down any combination of enemy. Individual immunities didnt matter at all, the only tedious monsters to kill were physical immune stone skin undead, but then only because I couldnt leach back my mana.

I went with a phaseblade so that i could get a shield for resists and some more elemental dmge, which gave me a low base leach amount, so wearing dracs was extremely helpful, as i almost always had a full life bulb (which is fun with 3k life), and lifetap also helped my merc and summons. Oak sage was just a 1pt prereq, but I though it was fun to have out even if most of the time it didnt help. Hunger even outpaced the lifedrainage from iron maiden and the chaos sanctuary was a breeze. And thats all not factoring in a 15 second shockwave which was superhelpful in almost all situations.

As far as drops, my forges were crap, hel and io respectively, but it was made up for by some nicer drops like a 14 res all gc, and a 20life 7lr sc.

Future plans, a fairly solid baalrunner, although i didnt time myself. Can really run any area pretty well. I highly recommend trying this build, especially to other hc players.

This is my first writeup as i never did them for pat/mats so let me know if i missed anything or messed anything up!

Thanks to Heskla, Sirpoops, and a few other people for trading so I could actually accomplish this.
and thanks to everyone else for reading,

    Any suggestions for next guardian?

Congrats! Looks like a very solid character.

Are you planning on twinking your next character? If so, what sort of items do you have available? Might help us guiding you on your next choice.

Congratulations! Any Guardian gets kudos in my book, but to do it with an unusual build like a Kodiakā€¦ Well Done!

    Congratulations!

I've always thought the Kodiak looked like an interesting build, but it's good to see proof that it's effective.

Shockwave makes that balance a little simpler to achieve :).

It is capped at 10 seconds I'm pretty sure . Very nice work on the Guardian though. I don't think a Kodiak would be my first pick, though I do suppose it is safe enough with all the leaching going on.

Good luck with the Baal runs and future Guardians!

Well done Rss, the first is always the best. As for HC Kicker, I'm building one myself at the mo. But she's untwinked. I hope to guardian her. Take care.

BFsin, sure. I guardianed one, not expensive but without expensive gears, you will be slow going like I did. I think if you play BFsin, and doesn't mind some strategic play, go for it.

    Congrats for your first.

Edit: if you need some reference, here is my guardian thread

Re: Finally, my first Guardian! Ron the Kodiak Bear

    Thanks guys,

Yeah the direwolves were okay. I had a rather beefy grizzly i could have used, but i was pretty darn good against single targets, so i wanted something to help against small annoying things like tons of flayers (they constantly interupted my attack and i would get stuck in hit recovery) or skeletons who could be revived. The fact that they consumed corpses was nice too. All in all i was impressed with them.

Speaking of skeletons, I only really had two NDEs, the first was in Tal Rasha's tomb when i got swarmed by a masssive army of skeletons and there were like 6 of those guys who revive them faster than i could attack. Eventually i carved a path out and got away. I didn't do any S&Es. The second was against the hell hell forge, the guy who drops the hammer (blanking on name) had a massive attack. He was KOing my merc in 1 hit and I couldn't couldnt even tank him. So that just took a little bit making sure he attacked a wolf first so i could get a few whacks in. It was that point that i realized i should put a point in grizzly bear.

I think the BFsin looks good, im gonna give her a whirl. I may have to devote some time to run countess to get a ko and lem for Lawbringer, that weapon looks nasty.

Re: Finally, my first Guardian! Ron the Kodiak Bear

Ko and Lem are not hard to find runes, you should have it fairly easily if you put some effort. Anyway, if you are looking for making a Lawbringer, you need to remember one thing - it does not do physical damage itself (for killing anything in hell). You use it for anything else but the physical damage. PB is the best option, IMHO.
