'Film(s) of the week' thread (09/05/05)

Well it's Monday again, *sigh*, and I'm back with this...

This week I have seen :
    Cannon Ball Run - Halarious!
The Day After Tomorrow - Good effects, fairly good story. Blatant similarities/feel to Independace Day, not suprising as it was directed by the same guy I guess.
    Team America - Again yes.
Underworld - I quite liked this one, I expect some will disagree...
Mr Deeds - Funny but very random

Forgotten some again I'm sure.

I thought the story etc was pretty poor. It was the randomness which came through as funny to me, but then again I was fairly :stoned:

It was Crazy Eyes that made it watchable for me.

I'm finally going to see Crash tonight. After weeks of build-up. Expect a full report later on.

I already call Revenge of the Sith for next week, but in hommage to Master Lucas these are my films:

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back (especially this and the next one)
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Kingdom of Heaven - wasn't too great. They should have gotten someone
other than Orlando Bloom. This was no Gladiator
Oldboy - see my thread about this movie. It was fantastic. Probably the best
movie I saw in the last 6 months (up there with Sideways and Million
    Dollar Baby)

Crash was... powerful. But my initial gut reaction told me a lot of it was filler. And that it was largely contrived. But damn.

    Powerful, powerful **** right there.

    Glad I saw it alone.

I'll just post the movies I saw last week (it being Tuesday here now), can't remember if I already mentioned some of them or not.

    The Village (rent)
    Magnolia (rent)
    The Big Sleep (rent)
    Unbreakable (TV)
    Breakdown (TV)
    Blue Streak (TV)
    Revenge of the Nerds (TV)

The three I rented were all superb. Magnolia is a bit of a stunner and The Big Sleep is your classic Bogart noir.

After hearing almost nothing but bad reviews I expected The Village to be basically another Signs: beautiful, creepy and laden with atmosphere but essentially nconvincing. While it didn't come close to the levels of The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, The Village was surprisingly good. A touching love story, intriguing characters, a meaningful social commentary and Shyamalan's masterful direction kept me interested the entire way through. The obligatory twist was present but toned down compared to his last few films, just enough to make the point without overdoing it.

    Kingdom of Heaven

I thought Kingdom of Heaven was pretty lame. Decent fighting-scenes though.

I'm definitely looking forward to Star Wars; I think it's gonna be great!

I watched "the Butterfly Effect" last night (with Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart), I wasn't expecting it; but it was a good movie.... it had a nice memento-"feel" to it.

The concept behind The Butterfly Effect was very good, but the ending was horribly cheesy IMO.

I actually enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven. I liked the historical aspect to it, and I thought the visuals were very well done.

There were quite a few endings and depending on which one you saw, yes it was.

The ending I saw was the baby in the womb killing itself. Not very cheesey at all in my opinion.

    Different endings?

I'll look for the extra-endings-option on the Butterfly Effect-DVD tonight.....

The only ending I saw was (I admit) pretty cheesy and predictable.

But the one you (bigD72) mention sounds cool; Ashton goes back in time and gets suicidal at the age of eh.... -1/2, to prevent all the **** that happened!?

I hope I'll get to see that!

    David.
