fanatic zealot and weapon speed

I'm a level 31 zealot stuck in act IV. I'm not sure if I should use a very fast weapon or a slower weapon that does more damage. Is there a speed I should be looking for? Now I'm using a 19-43 one hand hammer (normal attack speed) and am having lots of trouble in chaos sanctuary. Before this I had a 1-35 very fast flail. It seemed to work better but I could buy a scepter with a very fast attack speed with 10-17 damage, etc. Should a fanatic zealot go for a really fast weapon or a slow one with higher damage? I have zeal maxed and one in fanaticism and other prerequisites. I've tried a few different weapons but am not sure what to look for. Thanks for any help.

Use this Weapon Speed calculator. Than compare your damage per frame (or per second). War hammer is the slowest 1hand weapon, so you might be better with something else.
For an untwinked zealot, look for War Scepters (around lvl 31) good damage and good speed. Try to shop one in act 3 by Ormus. You can also try to use "socketed magic weapon" cube recipe to get 2 sockets and insert iths there.

thanks Hrus. i'll check out the calculator. i didn't realize you couldn't go back to act 3 after going through the portal so i got ahead of myself and am now just killing the normal monsters over and over, trying to find something good or level up. thanks again for your quick reply.

I don't think there is a point to stay in act 3 normal at lvl 31. You don't get much experience to lvl up easily and drops are also not as good. You might want to try kill Mephisto few times, but I suggest to go through act 4, which is rather tough, but act 5 is easier again and you get very nice experience fast there. Just visit Ormus few times if he sells good War Scepter, nad if not, just make a socketed War Scepter in the cube and insert ITH runes for better damage.

thanks! i just got a war scepter with plus 1 to cleanse and it's working much better. plus now i can get rid of that nasty iron maiden curse with a click!

For twinked play, get Sigon's set, Civerb's cudgel, Nokozan Relic, Manald Heal, Cathan's Seal and whatever charms you have. That's more than enough for a fana-zeal paladin to finish normal mode and it should be possible to get all of that for 20 pgems or less.

Keep blocking at 75% while holy shield is active by adding stats points to dex. You can check your block chance by moving the mouse cursor over the defense rating in the character screen. The number shown on the shield is just base blocking which is modified by level and dex (the higher your level, the more dex you need).

As soon as you have L4 zeal (and thus 5 attacks... +skills items might help at that), max fanaticism first, then the zeal synergy, then zeal. Also invest a point into holy shield at the earliest opportunity, but it's maxed last. At low levels it might be annoying to refresh holy shield all the time, but always use it when fighting bosses.

'Black' Flail is a very good weapon choice for starter. Its only cost Thul + Io + Nef to make.
