Fanatic or Conviction Avenger?

Fanatic Zealot or Conviction Avenger?

  1. Which one of these build would be the strongest in Hell?
  2. How gear defendant are they compared to each other?
  3. Would either of these builds be able to beat hell?
  4. Was it wise of me to choose the path of an Avenger over a Zealot?
  5. How does each one deal with immunities, if they even have trouble dealing with them at all?
These are my main questions, because I would like to easily decide which type of character and not have regrets later in the game. I am definitely sure that more questions will arise. :) Thanks.

The title seems to imply that you are going to make a paladin that uses Vengeance but you are unsure of which aura to focus on. I've have to say that conviction is the better choice.

Your questions seem to imply that you are choosing between a fanatic zealot and an avenger.

3. A zealer definitely can.
4. I don't see why not.
5. A zealer only has to deal with physical immunes. For that, the best option is to have a weapon on switch that deals a lot of elemental damage. I used gimmershred/tiamat's rebuke. An avenger deals 4 kinds of damage, so immunities aren't a problem.
6. Both of which guys? Wasn't the zealot one of the first two?

Fanatic zealots and avengers work fine. I would think that a paladin that uses Vengeance and fanaticism would not be as effective as either of the first two.

Sorry about the confusion, but your answers have cleared stuff up for me, which will make it easier for me to clear it up for you. :)

Which build is more gear dependent? Fanatic Zealot, or Conviction Avenger?

Which build would be easier to beat hell with? ( Solo, Singleplayer )

Thanks!

Avengers are more gear dependant than zealots, mostly because unlike zealots you do care about +skill items more than you care about dealing physical dmg (that's the whole point of being an avenger, the prismatic damage), and vengeance deals dmg based on your weapons dmg, so you'll want a high damaging weapon. Both can solo hell easily, and you can beat the game with either of them.

As far as the "strongest" goes, it really depends on what you mean by "stronger". i'd say the avenger is stronger, because he deals more damage (comparatively) and he's more party-friendly with his conviction aura, not to mention the "nothing is immune to me" aspect, which zealots lack.

However, zealots can hold their own much better, due to the fact that they can easily max defensive skills like holy shield without compromising their damage (the avenger needs to work on vengeance's synergies and that costs precious skill points) and that zeal is a skill that deals with big crowds (vengeance is one kill at a time type of skill), so I really comes down to whether you'll play single or multi player. For single, i'd go with the zealot, for multi, avenger any day of the week.

Thank you, it sounds like Zealot is the better choice for me. I only play singleplayer, and all of my characters are untwinked. And the Zealot is better for solo, and is less gear dependant. You said that Avengers have noone immune to them, what is immune to Zealots? PI's? Would a zealots effectiveness be greatly reduced because of the 50% Physical Resistance in hell, even with that resistance, a Zealot would be more effective in Hell Solo?

U can always put 1 point in vengeance for physcial immunes..

Or you can get a merc that deals elemental dmg..

I recommend a bow on switch to kill Iron Maiden casters in act 4-5
Cuz that is really the only real weakpoint to any zealot..

Preferably a widowmaker bow

PI's the only weakspot of Zealots? What about the 50% physicaly resistance in Hell, doesn't that hurt a lot too?

not really, with maxed zeal/maxed fanat and an elite weapon you are doing a ton of damage, so it may take a couple hits to kill things but they do die. zealots are incredibly good and incredibly fun at the same time (at least mine always have been....i got bored playing an avenger until i built an Auradin and used vengeance on him).

Yeah I gotta ask something about this.

I'm working on a zealot and I remember the last time I played the game (three years+ ago) I ended up wondering if I should have saved the points spent on zeal for defiance or something else. My new zealot has a bunch of points saved, and only 1 point spent on zeal. +all skills (like zaka, which I don't have yet but I'm working on it) will get zeal up to maximum number of hits.

AFAIK maxing zeal itself does not add to the damage dealt, is this correct?

maxing zeal DOES add to the damage dealt, not to mention attack rating boost as well. by all means, max zeal.
