Fallout 3....un-cancelled?

Following yesterday's conference call with investors, Interplay CEO Herve Caen casually dropped a bombshell. "We're planning to publish Fallout 3," he bluntly told an analyst who was inquiring about the PC role-playing game sequel.

The news came as a shock, given that the game community had all but dug Fallout 3's plot in the game graveyard. The bad news started last year when a series of prominent persons, including Feargus Urquhart and JE Sawyer, left Fallout 3's developer, Black Isle Studios.

The departures sparked rumors of problems behind the scenes at Black Isle, Interplay's internal role-playing game studio. One of its premier projects, Baldur's Gate 3 (code-named "Jefferson") was put on indefinite hold following Interplay's loss of the Dungeons & Dragons license to Atari.

That left Fallout 3, the next chapter in one of the most widely admired RPG series of all time, as Black Isle's sole project. However, in November, Interplay shut down Black Isle, and sent its entire staff packing. With nobody working on Fallout 3--and its dismissed developers spitting venom--the industry assumed that the game was dead in the water. That is, until today.

Though Caen was uncharacteristically direct about Fallout 3's publishing plans, he was less so about its development. "Fallout 3 is not actively being developed right now," he said, "but we will have an announcement on that front soon, regarding that project."

I want to be elated, but it doesn't look likely that the people responsible for the other Fallout games will be working on this one. Instead I feel a sense of impending doom (Doom III?).

If Interplay messes up the Fallout series they probably won't live out the year. Angry gamers will tear down corporate headquaters around them. Thinking back to all the other cases where I thought "Oh please don't let them **** this up." I have to say they probably will.

Still, it's very exciting and i'm curious how it'll turn out.

Well the article just says Interplay will be publishing the game. Black Isle might be the ones to pick it up again and make it.

You have no idea how badly I would like to see Fallout 3 come out, but the morons at Interplay have kicked out every developer who made Fallout (and Black Isle) special.

Oh, I don't know. They've already sold themselves to Micro$oft with Brotherhood of Steel for the X-box.

I just wish that they'd be a bit more adventuresome, rather than try to make the Fallout equivalent of "Die Hard 3". Say, something like {crowbar swing} in a MMORPG, or open-sourced game guts with hosted subscription-based servers.

There's still a Black Isle now?

As other people have said, holding back my cheeriness over this. It's not even a garuantee that it will happen, especially when FalloutoS flops.

To be on the safe side though I'm going to stockpile pitchforks, torches and rotten tomatoes in case they screw it up.
