Cramming is usually a waste. It depends a lot on what major you are and what they are testing for, but in general there is no way around plugging through the daily practice problems.

Whatever you do, don't cheat yourself on sleep.

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

as for studying (stuff done before the exam), whatever works best for u.

science says:

1. that it's good to study for like 20 minutes than take a 10 minute break. rinse n repeat.

2. do NOT stay up all night studying/cramming at night and especially NOT before the day of the exam. GET SLEEP. study during the day, sleep at night. or i guess if your on nocturnal schedule or it simply works better for u, than study during the night and sleep during the day. GET ENOUGH/PLENTY OF SLEEP

how/why sleep is SO IMPORTANT:

when u sleep, u literally, take everything u stuffed into your brain during the day, and analyze and organize it. u even think and question and wonder about it. all these things cause u to actually utilize all that knowledge u tried to stuff into your brain. i'm sure many times, u have stuffed a ton of stuff into your brain and realize u didn't or hadn't retained a single piece of it. the answer is sleep. sleep does all the work for u. u do NOT have to do anything. u jsut put the stuff into your head during the day and whil u sleep, the sleep will do all the retaining/memorizing for u. it's soooo coool. science is awesome. so make sure u get SLEEP!!!!

3. as for the actual day of the test:

think of a test as a sport and it's GAME DAY!!! it's time for u to perform! TO SHOW YOUR STUFF! TO IMPRESS A GIRL (OR A GUY). GET SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE. EAT A GOOD AND BIG BREAKFAST (food that is full of energy. good-healthy "breakfast" food). DO NOT WORRY OR GET AFRAID! THINK: YOU'RE GONNA KICK SOME "TAIL". YOU ARE GOING TO "ACE" THE TEST. THE TEST IS GONNA BE EASY. BE COFIDENT AND EVEN ARROGANT. GET "PSYCHED" up. GET "PUMPED". GET THAT ADRENALINE FLOWING. WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS AS U WAIT TO BE HANDED YOUR TEST AS IF YOUR GONNA EXPLODE OUT OF A SPRINT BLOCK FOR THE 100 METERS AT THE OLYMPICS. GO KICK SOME TEST "TAIL" !!!!! GO CONQUER THAT TEST. VINI VEDI VECI (I CAME. I SAW. I CONQUERD.) !!! ROARRRR!!!!! (well not literally roar, u'd probably get kicked outa class or school, lol)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S.

jsut noticed u from scotland !

i know u don't think much of willam wallace, but the braveheart movie with mel gibson made him fmaous and very popular with americans.

but anyways,

pretend your mel gibson in brave heart: put your war paint on, get your weapons, turn away from your teacher, lift up your kilts (or whatever they called), and bend over.....and shake/wiggle.....

and than get up and, yell FREEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM (freedom), as you rush at your teacher!!

(okay, actually when mel gibson yells freedom, it is at the end of the movie when he is pulled apart as punishment after getting captured. but meh.)

(okay okay, i'm just kidding about this too. do NOT do this!!! the teacher/school may tie u up and rip u apart also :p)

1. Use your reading time to plan an attack on the paper.
2. If possible do the questions in the following order; high value question you know well, high value questions you know less well, low value questions you know well, the rest in order of value.
3. Never leave a question unanswered.
4. A question that is worth 4 marks will normally require more points of evidence to achieve full marks. My rule of thumb, if a question is worth 4 marks, give 4 points of evidence, if it's worth only one, one point will usually do.
5. Doing past papers is good, reading examiner's reports on past papers is better.
6. A small sugar hit before the exam really helps.
7. Don't turn up to an exam drunk, it doesn't help. I speak from experience.

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

Plan your future study time until then (obviously). Full spread untill last week then recapture what you learned.

Study with a mate. It helps keeping discipline if somebody else is also dependant of your presence.

Agreed on the sleep. Essential on keeping the knowledge where it should be.

Caffeine works! Though don't overdo it. Good and regular meals also help. Just like some excersise now and then to give your mind a break.

Don't do what I do and study the 2 hours before exams...

I was so lucky those were Gr.9 exams, and I'm pretty sure I got >85% average on all my exams....

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

Hege, Mel Gibson was famous way before Braveheart. In fact, he directed Braveheart. He was so famous beforehand, he became a director.

OP, Be VERY thourough. Read and reread every detail of every page. That little tiny box in the corner with little print under it, the authors' names who wrote the textbook, the headings, little lists in point form, the questions in the chapter reviews, don't skip any of it. University tests are really good at finding chinks in your armor (if that's where you're going).

Read and reread. By the time you read it the fifth time, you will be able to predict the next sentence whih will help make it go faster.

Cramming really depends on you, some people can cram it all in at the end but most can't.

If you don't at least understand ~60% of the material by the time the study period comes around you're going to struggle. Especially if you're juggling other difficult subjects at the same time (not to mention working). That said, I think I learned 70% of a subject in the revision period, on average.

your right about mel giblson,

sorry for not clarifying, i ment the fame more for the MOVIE braveheart, not mel gibson himself, as u said he himself was well famous before braveheart.

i ment BRAVEHART the movie as being a loved/favorite/popular movie of "most" (i think) americans.

my mistake for not being more clear. my bad.

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

ha ha, mel gibson is a tube, Scottish people aren't realy like that!

also, thanks for all the quick responses :D
some of it kinda goes without saying, though.

what about when actually sitting the papers, how do you guyes tackle the Q's?

easys first? multi choice first?

thanks in advance guyes :D

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

The multiple choice is for last, you can always guess them right if you haven't had the time to go over the study material. But do NOT keep a system which ranks your tasks in difficulty. Just keep another system like low to high chapter number or whatever (if possible). Otherwise keep the order of the form where your study material is in.

My exam scores are highly subject to how interested I am in the particular class.

Protip for me being: Pick classes I like. I win both ways.

Re: exam technique...do's and dont's?

Depends on you really. Whats your baseline is the key question.

With no study do you

- fail
- barely pass
- Get a B
- Get an A

If its a B or better than I say be a lazy **** and enjoy life.
