Ever Played With No Moron, errr, merc?

Well to make it a real challege for my traps tree only build I have yet to use a merc and I am at ancients in nightmare. Since I am trap tree only I have no shadow either so I guess I am working with the true definition of solo. It is much harder to go no merc when you are not a tank build. But, you become better at avoiding damage when you force yourself to play defensively with such a build. Crowd control is the hardest thing to get use to playing solo.

I typically pick my mercs thematically - Zons get Rogues, Pallys get Pallys, and my new IK Barb gets a barb.

Actually, my spear zon either has a barb or a pally (like i said, thematic), but I like to have them around - makes me fell less alone in the game :)

What is the "killing blow" trick?
Your merc gains your MF plus their MF so if you allow them to get the "killing blow" or the very last damage then you get the drops at a larger MF level thus better chance of getting uniques. This is how some people are able to kill with 1400% better MF (maybe exaggorated) they are loaded themselves with MF and then the get their merc very powerful with a bit of MF then they let the Merc do the killing. A Sorc with a high static slvl for example will lower the life of an enemy and let her barb merc finish the enemy off while she is wear nothing but MF items.

I hope that clears up your question.

I always play with a merc, even in Meph runs (merc has RT. Decrep pwns Meph), and I always have, and always act 2 mercs. I just can't imagine going through the game without that second tank there to cover your pixelated butt, expecially for characters that have no minions/summons of their own (barb, sorc, pally).
