Have they fixed the skills systems yet? I was too confused by it to continue.

Fixed? No, not much had changed I guess. Just try not to get overwhelmed by it, on you first character just look at the immediate choices you have to make and don't worry too much about the rest of the stuff until you're more familiar with the game.
