IIRC i got that actors group done fairly quickly. Only took me a few times (first one was indeed a complete surprise and i got whacked). From what i can recall that harpers ambush was tougher.

That fear casting can be highly annoying. That's why either a paladin or a remove fear spell (range so you get the entire party fearfree) are very important. Otherwise your guys are running all over the place and just get slaughtered.

The AI is pretty good in general. They cast the right spells to make it hard on you. There's more spells to remove magic and also to protect yourself from things like disintegrate, but i think most of them are fairly high lvl so most likely you haven't gotten that far yet.

Sometimes silencing enemy mages works too, but in general they got that vocalize spell to lift the effects of that. So that won't help you in many situations.

Did you play Baldur's Gate 1, or know much about the series?
After finding my old CD's were corrupt, I got BG+TotSC expansion from GoG.com. BG2+Exp is there too.

Most of the enemy mages are heavily magic resistant. Hold person, Charms, Sleeps, Power Word: Stuns, Silence - they barely ever work - I still try it, just in case, but I don't think Silence has worked at all for me yet.

Versus mages i like using AoE spells and summons. The protections they got often only work for spells targeted at them. Things like poisonous cloud often do work. Weird thing is sometimes at first you'll see text appearing they're magic resistant, but as they stand longer in such AoE spells they start taking damage. Never understood why that was.

And while many summons aren't very strong (there's some better ones later in the game) they are great to let them deplete their magic arsenal. Stay a good distance away and send in one of two summons at a time. You can see protective spells triggering in the text screen below. And what spells they're wasting on your summons. Don't send many summons in at once, cause if they use an AoE spell vs them, you wasted like 5 summons at once.

The above doesn't work everywhere as there's not always room to stay away, but it's a tactic i've used often.

It's quite a bit different to other RPG's, and I guess that's why I like it. The story/lore is quite good, the exploration (BG1) is really enjoyable - you're exploring the wilderness, going from town to town. Have a look on YouTube and other sites - it is quite an old game now - and see if it's something that might interest you.

I'm actually wondering who I should keep in my party at the moment. I like the starting party you get offered for the story (Aerie and Nalia,) but running into Edwin, he is quite the powerful caster, having double the level 1 spells than my other two mages, and greater casting for the higher levels as well. But I like my current mages for their story/banter with the rest of the party, and the fact that Edwin is an evil character is a downer too.
I think I'd get rid of Nalia, as she's a Mage/Thief (and he thieving skills are abysmal,) but the banter. I'm sure Edwin and Minsc would have some interesting comments to each other if they were put in the same party...

Who to have in the party has always been difficult for me too. Edwin and Viconia are a couple of the strongest chars in the game. Since i like to be a good guy, it makes it difficult (but not impossible!) to keep them in a party. If you like playing a bit more on the dark side, they're both nobrainers and should be in your party at all times.

poe is online only, but as with d3, you don't have to play with anyone.

@ Drystan, the tree is daunting at first, but once you finally look at it and try to figure out what you want to 'be' is pretty fun and not daunting at all. It still is a lot of skill nodes to look at, but there are actually only a few that you want to go for.

@ioupain - If the hydra slow-down is true, it's from 2009, so I don't think it matters for current patch - possibly 1.09? I half think I have heard that something similar, if not this, did occur when Blizz tried to buff something.

I don't think the tree is daunting, but may've been my choice of words. When you first see the web layout, you think "wow, that is immense." But it looks like it can offer some variation in character design, and is quite an interesting way to do it. I did get the impression that, while it looks like a lot of variation, there would only be a few key paths you'd want to take to get to a final point.
I do like it, because it is such a neat way of doing it.

@kestegs - You start at a certain point, depending if you've gone with the Int (typical mage class,) Strength (figter,) Dex (rogue/ranger), or half x/y hybrid,) and start with two choices. From there, you branch out.
I agree that with all that choice, there'd only be certain areas most people would head towards due to the power/value of that point, so there's no real point to having so many. But if it were balanced and allowed more variability, that web would allow for some awesome character differences and design/builds.

PoE being online only really takes it down a notch for me. Maybe some of the revenue is from advertising, but I can't guarantee my connection is stable anyway. :/ Shame - it does look like it's added some unique features to D2.

Final Fantasy? I watched one of those movies, a long time ago. It was... Not really memorable. I don't know what it was, but I can't recall much at all about it. That said, I think I didn't mind it, but I don't even know why or where I watched it.

Edit: And yes, I know the movie was an adaptation of a game series. I just have no experience of the games.

You probably saw advent children. It was meh, but I don't care for anime in general.

The games are a different story, and I actually haven't played past 9. I've only watched a friend play 10.
