I'm somewhat confused by the differences between D2, D3, TL2, and PoE. They're all so similar, yet so different.

TorchLight 2 seems like a new and more colourful version of D2, with different skills and graphics, but generally the same, with some elements of D3.
PoE actually has an interesting skill point setup, and looks like it's given a few really nice changes.

I know both of these have had new threads about them, but I've only just checked out PoE, and it doesn't look too bad. Fundamentals of D2, with some major revamps - that skill web layout is insane to look at, and the waypoint map is a nice touch.

Can't say I've played Skyrim. Or know much about it, except it's a(n) MMORPG.

Baldur's Gate II is definitely getting better. It's just the tactics in BG:TotSC cannot be transferred to BG2. In BG:TotSC, you could basically deck your mages with animal/monster summoning, and use them as complete meat-shields, while your guys hang back in safety.
Or get a strong Thief and abuse Backstab -> run into building/around corner -> Hide in Shadows -> Backstab -> repeat.

But BG2, you can only have a max of five summons, and they're generally fairly weak anyway, and enemies follow you up/down stairs, and outside buildings, so you can't hide from them.

It's just an adjustment of tactics which no longer work, and finding different methods of dealing with certain groups. Having so many more skills/enemy magics available, it is a lot tougher though. I can't work out how to get around some of the mages blocking almost all damage. Low level spells don't work, enchanted weapons don't work. I have to blast them with Fireballs and Cloudkills before they get all their spells up at once.

I've now beaten the two impossible fights that my last character stalled at. And with the new build, better knowledge of spells, and overall plan, they weren't actually that hard. I don't think the character has changed too much (possibly one or two levels extra, a more defined character creation/build, and some more efficient gear choices,) but the change in difficulty was extremely noticable.

PoE might be fun. I haven't checked into it much really, but I'll likely try it out when it gets released since there's really nothing to lose.

Way to go Dry! Which fights did you get past now, that you didn't before? And yes, mages do become more powerful. Lots of fun spells. Only problem is opponents have them too. Not so much fun when you're on the receiving end of them. :)

@kesty - True. I still don't really understand - are they not charging anything? It doesn't make sense.

@Cyrax - The first fight I couldn't get past was when you help out the actors guild group, they take a portal into a prison dimension. You follow them in to save them, and get ambushed from both sides. None of my guys could survive long enough to do any damage, and I got so many "weapon ineffective" messages, it was a hopeless fight.
After bailing on that, I tried to head to the Harper's building, where Jaheira was called to. Again, it's an ambush, but you can't even prebuff some spells outside (magic isn't allowed outside,) and generally just got overwhelmed in there too.

This time, I'm not exactly sure what the difference was, but it worked out much easier. My main character is a much stronger fighter class (also imported from BG:TotSC, so probably has better stats, ;) ) and have mostly abandoned summon creatures for other spells.

The AI mages are so dangerous. They have those annoying Horror/Fear spells, but also completely overpowered spells. Disintergrate? That's an auto-kill spell that can't really be protected against. Have it cast against your main char, and it's over.
Then as soon as they see you, they cast five or six protective/anti-damage spells, so all your attacks become ineffective, and Dispell Magic doesn't even work. I think there's a Remove Magic spell that removes protections Dispell Magic can't, but I've only just made that a memorised spell.
Yeah, it's tough, but I can make some good progress now, and am no longer being overwhelmed by the mass onslaught of side-quests. I'm beginning to like more of the side-quests too.

The Beta is easy to get into, I got in months ago, when it was less developed. I might try this BG 2... Where do I acquire it?
