Empire Earth II Registry Files Question

Okay, here's the deal. I legitimately purchased Empire Earth II, installed it, had a great time, and then stopped playing it. Somewhere in that process I managed to lose the instruction manuel with the CD key on the inside.

Now my issue is this: I only have a 40 GB harddrive, and as such I have to delete files with some regularity, and seeing as EE II is around 3 GB it's slated for deletion, but before that I'd like to see if there's some way of garnering the CD key from the installed copy of the game so that I can preserve it and not have to get another copy.

I've heard people talk about how this is possible via some sort of registry file that's created by the game when it's installed, but I neither have any clue as to how to go about finding this file, much less how to extract the actual code. I've tried sifting through the installation directory itself, however, failing both that and a google search, I thought that I might appeal to the 'ol OTF for some help.

I'd really appreciate it guys, thanks in advance :afro:

what you're asking probably requires the use of a registry hacker. . . which is likely against the user agreement of EEII. . . so I don't think we're allowed to discuss that here. . .

Hmm...I was under the impression that this would be legal since I'm basically just trying to retrieve information on something that I've already purchased:sad2:

Isn't this the second time you've asked me that? :wink2: Nope, I'm not the person you're looking for, even though I actually think I remember who you're talking about. Also, Angel_Dusted is hardly a girly name.

I dunno, maybe you should contact the retailer or the game company.

I don't think you need to hack the registry....just have to find it in the registry. You can do the same with CS, WarCraft, Diablo II, etc.....to find the CD-Keys in the registry..

which requires hacking certain files. That information is stored in files and can't be uncovered by just opening up a simple text document. It's technically illegal.

Im fairly certain there was a thread a few months ago in the community forum about locating your D2 CD key, the long & the short of it was it wasnt illegal to do, so they told you how to do it. Dont think it involved any 3rd party programs, but Im not sure. Try asking in the community forum see if anyone remembers the thread, that might help you with this game.

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure threads like that get closed since the CD key isn't there in plain site, there is a reason they don't want you to get it without extracing it illegally...this would be a mod question.

Well, I see this has developed a bit since I last checked in. Thanks for weighing in guys. I wouldn't bother posting about this if I wanted to do it illegally, there are enough keygen and crack programs out there if I just wanted to play the game, but seeing as I purchased it legitimately I was kind of hoping there would be an easy way around it. I know that games like Neverwinter Nights just told you what your key was in a neat little notepad file in the install directory, so I had hope, but alas.

I did try contacting a company rep from Sierra and the response was basically "You lost it, give us ten dollars plus shipping and handling for a new one," which suffice to say I was a bit dissappionted with. I'll check the community forum links, but I already know how to get my Diablo II CD key, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to be applicable.

Oh well, I'll keep at it.

    TY VM :innocent:

Oh right, it's a Sierra game. If I remembered that I would've told you not to bother, Sierra is a real bunch of ****s.
