the best thing you can do is round teh cattles up (15-30) then slaughter them.

Or use a wand of confusion on weapon swap and gather them up in groups of 50-100

in 1.09, the "optimal" size of cows to slaught is 100+.

in 1.10, you can still do that with a dedicated LF javazon (assuming the player is skilled at herding).
