Easy-to-get equipment for a Fishymancer in SP

I'm playing single player (duh!), and I'm wondering what equipment I should try to get for my Fishymancer. I'm still playing through Normal, so it's not that big of a deal yet, but I want to have some decent equipment for when I get to Hell.

Anyway, I'm mainly looking to acquire items that are good for a Fishymancer, but relatively easy to get. Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you very much.

Peasant crown
Skin of Vipermagi
Nice RS wand
'Rhyme' in a necro head which has + to RS

And a nice hurty stick to the merc. Obedience would be a nice cheap option especially if u are playing 1.13.

Another option for a wand is to buy a Necromancer´s wand (+2 Necro skills), hopefully with a nice suffix and useful +skills. You can buy these starting in Nightmare, at clvl 44 and up.

Dirt cheap equipment:
Spirit low str sword (shop for a +Necro / +Summon wand if playing vanilla)
Spirit monarch (Sigon or Rhyme'd voodoo head if playing vanilla)
Lore helmet
Spirit Shroud / Skin of the Vipermagi
+2 Necro / +3 Summon amulet
Insight stick for mercenary (Honor if playing vanilla)

Wow! All great info... I think. Oh, sorry, did I not mention that I'm kinda a newb? But in all seriousness, I think I get most of it, but I have a few follow-up questions:

1. HappeningKT, are the items you mentioned usually found by just killing monsters and collecting drops? Are they really rare, or will I encounter most of them by just playing through the game? Also, what is a "hurty stick"?

2. jiansonz, how do I go about buying a Necro wand with +2 to Necro skills? Do I just keep buying wands and hope I get lucky? Who should I buy them from? Also, what are some examples of good suffixes?

3. naranjadita, similar to what I asked in 2., how do I shop for good equipment? Could you or someone else please explain the basics? You mention all this equipment, but I have no clue what any of it is or how to make it. How do I go about figuring out how to best collect/make the equipment you mentioned?

Thank you all very much. I trust you advice, just not my ability to understand what you're saying.

A lot of cheap runewords work well on a low end fishymancer.

Stealth/Smoke body armor
Lore helm
Rhyme/Spirit shield
White wand
Insight Iron Golem

Cube a prismatic ammy and hope for good second mods.
Craft Caster/Safety equipment for resists or useful mods (fcr, mana, res etc)
If you have really bad rings, the single resistance recipes can be useful if you're hurting on a particular element.

If you want to make runewords, shop for plain 2 OS wands with relevant skills in A1 or A2 normal. After that they will be magical and you can't make runewords. If you want a +2 necro skills wand it has to be magical. I'm not sure when that mod begins spawning on vendors however.

When shoping from vendors, their stock will reset each time you leave town. This makes Drognan a good shopping target for non magic wands/staves since you can roll a Lut Gohlein map with him right next to the exit. I like shopping for magical stuff in Act Four because of the town layout there.

Just play him naked for a while. Once you realize this is doable, just about any equipment will be fine.

Look at the wands for sale when you are in town to sell stuff. Necromancer´s wands are usually green in colour.

Any vendor that sells wands will do. Not those in Normal, because they have ilvl caps that are too low. If you have the Act II town layout where the exit is right next to Drognan, that is a nice place for 'power shopping' (i.e. look at his wands, take one step out of town, back in and look at his (now refreshed) wands for sale, etc.)

Good suffixes are mainly +mana or faster cast rate.

Since it is a fishymancer, the easiest answer would be : any gear you have on you atm. If it is possible to play trough hell naked with one, it must be possible in the gear you have atm :)

More constructive : Since you want to get ready for hell, i would reroll Mephisto maps on nightmare till you ahve a easy and quick one, then run him a few times. How about 100 runs ? :) That will give you some nice items to make you hell ready.

U can get most of the equipment I mentioned from nightmare mephisto(fishy isn't the best build for running meph, but is still doable). And by 'hurty stick', I meant a polearm/spear with big damage for the merc. Basically Obedience is a runeword with easily obtainable runes. U'll have to run nightmare countess for the runes.

Peasant Crown, Skin of vipermagi can be obtained from Nightmare meph.
Runes for Rhyme, Lore and obedience runewords can be obtained by running nighmare countess.btw here are basics bout runewords

As for shopping, u can trade items from vendors in town(Mods on wands or any other items u want to buy will be visible. So basically u don't have to buy to check out what u shopped except if u are gambling. U'll have to leave and re-enter the town until u get required wand). In order to refresh the items they sell, just leave the town and re-enter.
U can also gamble a few items for gold. Here are the basics of gambling.
Hope this helps :)

Best possible way to see what runewords you can realistically look at depending on where you are in the game:
http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=764204

Who sells what:

The two bibles of untwinked play:

Also, almost all stuff people mention in this forum can be searched for on the Diablo Wiki. Item Generation Tutorial is a good place to start learning, but really just concentrate on having fun unless you like digging into the guts of how things work and how to optimally play.

Thank you all for all the great information and advice.

I'm gonna play for a while and try to implement some of the things you guys recommended. I'll be back later to report on my findings, etc.

Thanks again.

Fishymancers need equipment?

Huh. I'll be damned.

Well, they don't need it (apparently), but for a newb like me, who has never cleared Hell, it doesn't hurt.

PS. Seriously. I know you're joking. If I were new here I could mistake you for an arrogant elitist... something.

It's hard to not be elitist when you're truly elite. -monocle adjust-

See, here's the thing. I mean, I need glasses to be able to find bathroom in my own home, basically, and I have a Q for you:

How on Earth do you deal with having one eye seeing fine and the other one seeing blur? You close one of them?
