    DTM and Energy Shield

I've read the guides on DTM and energy shield over and over and seem to see a lot of people arguing that it isn't possible to develop an effective balance between the two, however, I'm still really interested in possibly trying to do this.

I was just curious if there was anyone out there that feels they've managed to find a successful balance that provides you both with a good defense and plentiful mana return. I feel that elemental damage would probably overwhelm a build focused around this, but I'd like to hear if anyone has had success. Thanks.

as it says in those other threads...

... basically, once you get about 800+% DTM (roughly - I don't read the details anymore), you've got something to work with. Except it's not possible to get 800+ DTM. It's not even possible to get ~200% effectively.

So, it's simply not a viable idea. Period.

(however, there are some people that think a reasonable amount of DTM is nice for mana-burn packs - you might get enough mana back to teleport away from danger. Personally, I just enjoy a large mana pool and regeneration, then by the time I manage to cast a spell, my mana's got enough to teleport already - without DTM. This is the "effective balance" that I've found.).

For replenishing your mana completely with 95% energy shield, you need to replenish 20x mana the amount of life you lost. That is, 2000%. If you add maxed elemental resists to that, you need to replenish 4x more, and that is 8000%. Impossible.

Not completely right. ES-focused sorcs often pump ENG instead of VIT, and have massive mana pool.

A properly built ES sorc will have a huge mana pool as ProfessionalBerg said, and can tele a second (maybe less) after being mana burned. As soon as you get Mana Burned, take a few steps back until your mana has regened, and then tele.

Or you can just drink a pot.

Well, I went with a lightning build with energy shield and so far so good. She can get manaburned, but can typically teleport right after.

Since it's be declared that it's definitely not possible to balance out a positive regen with DTM and energy shield I've just been stacking up damage reduction, +skills, and mana regen.

It seems to be working out rather well.....I just haven't figured out how to stop getting torn apart by lightning resistant monsters yet >_<.

DR and resist are working but not important when ES is on, IIRC

    When ES is on.

So whatever Damage goes to you , goes to ur - mana right?

and the 5% that actually goes to the HP will den have DR and Resist implemented ?

    Re: DTM and Energy Shield

I do know that ES comes before resistances. I think DR does too (but I could be wrong).

So, for example, you get hit for 100 lightning damage, your ES takes 95 off of that, and you would receive 5 damage to your life pool. Your resistances get to work on that 5 damage (so 60% resistance would reduce it to 2 damage - woot!!).

If DR works after ES too, then you should be able to entirely negate a lot of physical damage from monsters with 10-30 points in DR. Socket a couple of Sol runes or something like that...

Manaburners will still suck though. As does Poison damage (and Open Wounds in PvP).

So since my shield only absorbs 78% for me right now...I'm guessing I'm still getting a decent use out of the DR that I have.

Up towards 95% I'm guessing it's not as useful.

    Re: DTM and Energy Shield

Yes & no. I recently built an abbot, and it's true what SSoG says in his abbot guide - there aren't many monsters that do 100+ physical damage. I had 75 DR and level14 Battlecry, and there were very few monsters that could damage me at all with physical attacks.

So, for ES, I think ~10 DR would be "enough" with a full 95% ES. I'm guessing your 78% ES can probably still benefit from ~20-25 PDR fairly regularly.
